TAIPING: Who would have thought that plants that complement the flavours of dishes like asam pedas, laksa and kerabu could become a profitable source of income for those with the vision to seize the opportunity?
For former engineer Abd Halim Abd Majid, 50, from Kampung Batu 9, Trong, venturing into 'kantan' (torch ginger) farming not only provided a steady income but also opened doors to new agricultural opportunities, particularly in producing and selling kantan seedlings.
As the Taiping Kantan Project manager, Abd Halim said the idea took root during the Covid-19 Movement Control Order (MCO) after discussions with his partner, Mohammad Hazwan Mohamad Nor, 45, who had 15 years' experience in kantan cultivation.

'A friend suggested we focus on producing kantan seeds instead of just planting for flowers. Hazwan encouraged me to try germinating seeds from the flower itself rather than using rhizomes like ginger or turmeric,' he said.
In March 2022, the experiment succeeded, producing 800 seedlings in about three months, each reaching 20cm in height.
Soon after, bulk orders came in – 300 plants at a time – confirming high market demand.
To date, they have produced over 15,000 seedlings, marketed primarily through Facebook.
Buyers now come from Perak as well as Muar, Gua Musang, Kuantan, Kedah, and Perlis.
With growing demand, Abd Halim extended opportunities to the 'asnaf' (tithe recipients) and low-income groups, encouraging them to use their home yards for kantan seedling cultivation.
He said several of the asnaf families were able to cultivate between 2,000 and 3,000 kantan seedlings, Bernama reported.
His team buys back their produce, thus helping to boost their household income. Seedlings sell for RM3.50 to RM60, depending on size and age.
'The high demand allows us to sell 400 to 500 seeds a week with an average income of about RM2,500 a month,' he added.
In 2023, they sold over 40,000 seedlings, yet demand still exceeds supply.
They have since diversified into downstream products, including kantan flower sambal bilis, which has received encouraging market response.
Abd Halim, who is also the deputy chairman of the Al-Akram Larut Matang and Selama Welfare Organisation, hopes to eventually take the product overseas.
Meanwhile, Mohammad Hazwan describes kantan as a hardy herbal plant with low disease risk, producing flowers within 12-14 months with proper care.
Beyond seedlings, entrepreneurs also supply fresh kantan flowers – whether unopened, partially bloomed, or fully bloomed – to markets and wholesalers, priced around RM0.50 each.
He expressed gratitude to the Perak Agriculture Department and other agencies for their support and encouraged more youths to enter the field.
'Instead of leaving land idle, planting kantan is a better option.
'It's low-maintenance, offers steady demand, and can provide side income,' he said.

Najib Betrayed Public's Trust, SRC International Wants RM42 Million Back

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 15 (Bernama) -- The High Court here was told today that former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak betrayed the public's trust by misusing SRC International Sdn Bhd's RM42 million that were meant to benefit Malaysia's energy future and civil service pensioners. Counsel Kwan Will Sen, representing SRC International and its subsidiary, Gandingan Mentari Sdn Bhd, in the RM42 million civil suit against Najib, stated that it has been ten years since the money ended up in Najib's personal accounts and now, the two companies want it back. He made these remarks while delivering the opening statement on the first day of trial in the civil suit filed in May 2022 by SRC International and Gandingan Mentari against Najib (the sole defendant). 'Three courts namely the High Court, Court of Appeal and Federal Court, have already found him (Najib) criminally guilty of these very acts beyond a reasonable doubt. 'Najib was the Finance Minister at the time and had full control over SRC International. He held key positions, including that of Advisor Emeritus. As such, no significant transaction occurred without his knowledge or consent,' he said. Kwan also stated that the evidence will prove that the RM42 million was transferred from SRC International and ultimately ended up in Najib's personal bank accounts. Of this sum, RM32 million was immediately transferred to two companies that had previously covered shortfalls in Najib's accounts. 'These transfers were made pursuant to instruction letters bearing his (Najib) personal signature. The remaining RM10 million was spent through personal cheques issued by Najib himself,' he said. 'We say that the money trail is clear, the documentary evidence is overwhelming, and Najib's own sworn admissions are damning. We will prove our case under three complementary causes of action; knowing receipt, dishonest assistance, and misfeasance in public office. 'On any of these grounds, justice demands that these public funds be returned to their rightful owners – the Malaysian people,' he insisted.

AKPK Offers Free Financial Advisory Service For MHIT Policyholders Facing Premium Hikes

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 15 (Bernama) -- The Credit Counselling and Debt Management Agency (AKPK) has introduced a free financial management service to assist policyholders affected by premium increases for their medical and health insurance and takaful (MHIT) plans. In a statement today, AKPK said the initiative is aimed at enabling policyholders to make informed financial decisions while helping them maintain MHIT coverage in line with their overall financial capacity. 'Through this service, AKPK's financial advisors will conduct a financial health and needs analysis to help affected policyholders determine the level of premiums they can sustain with potential adjustments to their financial management plans. 'The goal is to help policyholders identify actions they can take to retain their MHIT coverage while managing their finances effectively,' it said. It added that policyholders can visit any AKPK branch nationwide to meet a financial advisor free of charge. AKPK chief executive officer Azaddin Ngah Tasir said the agency wants to ensure that policyholders affected by MHIT premium revisions understand all their options and do not lapse or surrender their policies due to other financial commitments. 'Our dedicated financial advisors are ready to work closely with policyholders and the Insurers and Takaful Operators (ITOs). 'We will guide them through a structured process, help them to analyse their budget, review their expenses, and ultimately, develop a sustainable plan to maintain their MHIT coverage,' he said. AKPK emphasised that to facilitate the financial management process, policyholders should bring the repricing notification letter, the accompanying Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) from their ITOs, and a current income statement or other proof of income.

Bank Negara to issue open finance exposure draft soon, finalise policy by next year

KUALA LUMPUR: Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) will release an Exposure Draft on Open Finance soon and finalise the policy by next year, with the first phase to be rolled out in the interim, subject to industry and public readiness. BNM governor Datuk Seri Abdul Rasheed Ghaffour said the central bank views tokenisation as a promising innovation in the financial sector with potential implications beyond capital markets. "Our focus is on exploring the potential benefits and implications of tokenising real assets in financial services, particularly use cases that bring tangible benefits to the economy,' he told a press conference after announcing the second quarter 2025 (2Q 2025) gross domestic product (GDP) performance here today. Abdul Rasheed said the discussion paper on asset tokenisation will outline BNM's proposed collaborative approach, provide guidance on developing tokenisation use cases, and set out safeguards to support responsible exploration initiatives. "Essentially, what is important is ensuring that tokenisation delivers real value to the economy, that the use cases meaningfully support economic activity with transparent and reliable information, and that there are adequate protections for users and customers. "It is about understanding what end-users require as we explore tokenisation,' he added. Earlier this month, the governor announced plans to release an exposure draft and a discussion paper on asset tokenisation by year-end, following the release of a Discussion Paper on Artificial Intelligence (AI), which outlines the central bank's regulatory and developmental approach, including priority areas for industry-led collaboration and the responsible adoption of AI in financial services. He said that a future-ready system calls for secure digital identity and data sharing frameworks, robust data governance, effective cybersecurity and a regulatory foundation that enables inclusive, responsible and trusted innovation. - Bernama
