WNBA star Sophie Cunningham brutally mocks league bosses after being punished for TikTok video

Daily Mail24-07-2025
Indiana Fever star Sophie Cunningham has slammed the WNBA after revealing she was fined $500 for criticizing referees.
The guard, who has been christened Caitlin Clark 's 'enforcer' this season, recently released a TikTok in which she called out 'some refs' in the league.
Clark is among the other stars to have clashed with officials but Cunningham has now been punished over her comments.
In the viral video, she wrote '@ some refs' while mouthing a line from Sabrina Carpenter's hit, 'Manchild.' The lyrics she lip-synced were: 'Stupid. Or is it slow? Maybe, it's useless'
On Wednesday, Cunningham took to social media once more to reveal her punishment and mock the WNBA.
'I got fined $500 for this TikTok,' Cunningham wrote on X alongside several laughing emojis.
I got fined $500 for this TikTok 🤣🤣 idk why this is funny to me… like ok 👍🏼 you got it bud! Cause there's not more important things to be worried about with our league right now pic.twitter.com/ELAlguHhMQ

'Idk (I don't know) why this is funny to me…like ok (thumb emoji) you got it bud! Cause there's not more important things to be worried about with our league right now.'
She then reposted a reply that read: 'The endless WNBA war on the people who are bringing attention to their product while protecting the behavior that turns people off NEVER ceases to amazed me.'
The Fever star did not specify what she meant by 'more important things.' But her comments come amid tension between the WNBA and its players over a new collective bargaining agreement.
At least week's All-Star Game, Clark and many of her WNBA rivals staged a protest. They wore t-shirts which read: 'Pay Us What You Owe Us'
Cunningham previously made headlines after criticizing the WNBA's expansion plans. Earlier this season, the league announced plans to add teams in Cleveland (2028), Detroit (2029) and Philadelphia (2030).
'You want to listen to your players, too. Where do they want to play? Where are they going to get excited to play and draw fans?' Cunningham said.
'I do think that Miami would have been a great (location). Nashville is an amazing city. Kansas City, amazing opportunity.'
She continued: 'I'm not so sure what the thought process is there, but at the end of the day, you want to make sure that you're not expanding our league too fast.
'I think that that's also another thing. It's kind of a hard decision-making situation. But man, I don't know how excited people are to be going to Detroit or (Cleveland).'

AraabMuzik: Electronic Dream 2 review – the return of a maximalist MPC wizard

Could there be a better time for AraabMuzik – the Rhode Island MPC wizard also known as Abraham Orellana – to return with a sequel to Electronic Dream, his generation-defining 2011 debut? The original album was confounding and exhilarating in equal measure, thanks to its canny fusion of EDM rave-up synths and blown-out hip-hop beats. Alongside the rise of producers such as Clams Casino, it spoke to a post-financial crisis millennial generation finding much-needed euphoria in electronic maximalism. Now, gen Z-beloved artists such as Bladee and Nettspend are reviving an even bigger, bolder version of that sound, and finding huge cult audiences But perhaps that's why Electronic Dream 2 – while engrossing and atmospheric, capturing AraabMuzik's trademark fusion of dread and debauchery – almost feels meek. Some songs, such as the smeary, blushing Til You Drop, capture the hallucinatory brilliance of the original album. Others, such as opener 3AM and the moody Half a World Away, feel more like generic beat tape cuts, in part because AraabMuzik's sound has been so influential that it now seems a little rote. Dubbing the album a sequel to Electronic Dream may have been a mistake: the grand trap track Reach Out is imposing and scary, building to a dense cacophony, but it feels out of place on a sequel to an album with such a defined sound. It's an understandable impulse to make a sequel: rappers have done it for years, and nostalgia-bait has become a dominant form of popular art – to the point that Madonna has been teasing Confessions Part 2. But for an innovator such as AraabMuzik, moving on seems the best path.

Commanders wideout Terry McLaurin requests trade after contract talks stall

Washington Commanders wide receiver Terry McLaurin has requested a trade, according to multiple reports on Thursday. Frustrated by the lack of progress in negotiations toward a contract extension, McLaurin sat out the first four days of training camp before reporting on Sunday. After reporting, he can no longer be fined $50,000 per day. McLaurin, who turns 30 in September, became a hold-in and was placed on the team's physically unable to perform list with an apparent ankle injury suffered last season. He did not attend organized team activities and mandatory minicamp. He did, however, participate in spring workouts. 'You'd like to get these things done quicker, but it doesn't always happen that way,' general manager Adam Peters said. 'Whatever happens along the way, just understand he's a great player and we want to keep him here.' With a base salary of $15.5m and cap hit of $25.5m in the final season of a three-year, $68.3m contract, the speedster is coming off a career year with 1,096 receiving yards, 13 touchdowns and 82 receptions on 117 targets. He added three scores and 227 yards on 14 receptions in three playoff games. McLaurin and rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels helped lead Washington (12-5) to their best season since it won the Super Bowl in 1991. The Commanders knocked off the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the NFC wild-ard round and Detroit Lions in the divisional round before falling to the eventual Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles in the NFC Championship Game. Over six seasons with Washington, the two-time Pro Bowl selection (2022, 2024) has 6,379 receiving yards, 38 touchdowns and 460 catches in 97 games. A team captain, McLaurin has hit the 1,000-yard mark for a franchise-record five straight seasons despite instability at the quarterback position before Daniels' NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year campaign.
