Colorado teacher shares advice for her peers about how to save money on classroom school supplies
Every year, teachers are spending money out of their own pocket to fill their classroom. With school starting soon, many teachers are now buying all the supplies they need to stock their classrooms for the upcoming school year. With rising costs, this can also come at a steep cost for educators. A local teacher has some advice on how teachers can save some money when getting their classrooms ready. According to the National Education Association, teachers spend on average $500 to $850 on school supplies every year. Some advice to help teachers reduce out-of-pocket spending include: Taking a look at what supplies you have from last year and see if anything can be re-used, making a list of everything you still need and setting a budget for yourself. Katie Bergman teaches creative writing at Aurora Central High School. She said this school year, she had to buy all new school supplies for her classroom. She first recommends shopping at several different places for supplies to help make supplies more affordable. "I do find that Walmart, ultimately, will always have the best pricing. Places like Amazon are good, especially if you need bulk supplies. Amazon is going to be great for teachers or for families with many children. You can buy like, say, for example, a big box of highlighters and separate them," said Bergman. Bergman said while every teacher's spending habits are different, elementary school teachers tend to spend a little more money than middle school or high school teachers because they have detailed plans that require certain supplies. She added that most schools will provide teachers with basic supplies, but they do not supply classroom décor. Bergman recommends going to local thrift stores or consignment shops to shop for furniture and supplies. "FaceBook Marketplace has been useful, mostly as a teacher, to find inexpensive items for my classroom. So, my goal is always to make the classroom a place where students want to be. So I've been able to find things like comfortable armchairs and rugs and tables and things like that from Marketplace at a really low or free cost," said Bergman. Bergman said this year, she's even doing a coffee bar for her students, where each student will get their own mug. "I was able to find over 100 mugs for free on Marketplace, so each student can have their own. And so that will be one of our first week assignments or activities, where students will decorate their mug and they'll have a personalized mug for the year to use," said Bergman. Bergman also recommends talking with others that work in your school. "Always talk to your bookkeeper or your secretary at your school to find out what kind of school supplies will be provided to you at your school. You can always talk to veteran teachers in the building to see if there's anything they want to clean out of their classroom," said Bergman. Teachers can also create a wish list for family and friends to help make things more affordable. Shop the sales throughout the summer months, buy used supplies or even utilize dollar stores. Teachers can also join teacher discount programs. As for community members, if you're interested in helping a local teacher, you can buy supplies from their Amazon wish list or contact the school or school district directly to make a donation.

Months of stock shortages have given way to a reliable supply at several of the major retailers. Walmart, Costco and Target are all seeing consoles available, either purchased solo or with Mario Kart World bundled in. Meanwhile, Best Buy only has the Mario Kart Bundle available. Which, if you ask me, is the one to get anyway as that saves you $30 on the epic Switch 2 launch title. Even if you haven't snapped one up yet, the stock seems to be hanging around a bit longer than we saw in June and July. Which suggests we could be nearing the end of chronic stock shortages. Over in the U.K., it's been a different picture for weeks now with Switch 2 seeing plenty of availability for a while. Anyone that hasn't bought Nintendo's best-selling hybrid console already should have no trouble finding a device at any of the U.K.'s major retailers. Nintendo Switch 2 launched on June 5 and costs $449 / £395 standalone and $499 / £429 bundled with Mario Kart World. There is also a new Pokémon Legends A-Z Bundle, which also costs $499 / £429 and is available to pre-order now. It will launch on October 16. I've been tracking Nintendo Switch 2 restocks every single week since the console was first made available to pre-order back in April, and even though it's now more available than it's ever been, I'll keep providing the latest updates to help you lock in a console as soon as possible. Best Buy currently has stock of the Switch 2 Mario Kart Bundle. Best Buy has been primarily holding in-store restocks, but its latest drop is also online. Mario Kart Bundle: $499 @ Best Buy After being absent from the Switch 2 pre-order phase, Amazon U.S. launched a Nintendo Switch 2 listing page and is now allowing shoppers to request an invite to purchase. There are no details yet when invites will be sent, but sign up now to be in with a chance to score a Switch 2. Mario Kart Bundle: $499 @ Amazon Target has restocked the Nintendo Switch 2. Both the standalone console and the Mario Kart Bundle are available for shipping, so make your pick and get yours. Mario Kart Bundle: $499 @ Target Sam's Club currently has stock of the Nintendo Switch 2 Mario Kart bundle! You can only order one per membership, though. Walmart has stock of the Nintendo Switch 2 Mario Kart World bundle for $499. Walmart's usual restock pattern is to first release stock exclusively to Walmart Plus members before later opening up to Kart Bundle: $499 @ Walmart GameStop says it has restocked the Nintendo Switch 2, but it is currently only available in-store. However, as a specialist video game retailer, we're expecting online stock to arrive at almost any point, so watch this space. Mario Kart Bundle: $499 @ GameStop My Nintendo Store is using an invite system to allocate its available Switch 2 stock. You will need to meet specific criteria, including having a Nintendo Switch Online account and then be selected and sent an invite to order the console. Mario Kart Bundle: $499 @ Nintendo Store Antonline's Switch 2 listings have a "coming soon" message. This could be a sign that the tech retailer is planning to restock the console in the near future, though that message has been there quite a while now, so it's a little puzzling. Mario Kart Bundle: $499 @ Antonline Newegg's Nintendo Switch 2 pages are live, but there's currently no stock. Newegg may restock the console soon, but nothing is confirmed yet, so this is another one to watch closely for now. Mario Kart Bundle: $499 @ Newegg The Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller is practically guaranteed to be the most in-demand Switch 2 accessory, and it packs a suitable upgrade over its predecessor adding a headphone jack, the new "C" button, and customizable back buttons. Additional retailers: Best Buy | GameStop Need an extra set of Joy-Con 2 controllers for multiplayer, or just because it's always nice to have a spare? You can pick up an additional set of Joy-Con 2 at various retailers for $94. Additional retailers: Best Buy | GameStop One of Switch 2's new features is GameChat, and to get the most out of this new addition you'll need a Nintendo Switch 2 Camera to video chat with your friends online. It's modeled after the iconic Piranha Planet from the Super Mario series and offers all the same features, plus you can close the Piranha's head to give yourself some privacy as needed. Huge caveat: it's resolution maxes out at 480p, whereas the Nintendo camera is retailers: Best Buy You don't need the Switch Joy-Con 2 Wheel to enjoy games like Mario Kart World, but it'll sure make the experience much more fun.
