One month on, Evans' bail bid continues
Exactly one month since his arrest, the formal bail application of murder accused Rob Evans is set to continue in the Humansdorp regional court on Monday.
Evans is accused of murdering his girlfriend, Vanessa van Rensburg, at his Oyster Bay holiday home during the Easter weekend.
And as the Gqeberha entrepreneur continues to fight for his freedom, defence attorney Paul Roelofse is expected to continue with his cross-examination of the lead investigator, WO Xolile Kato.
Court proceedings were off to a slow start on Monday morning as the court waited for the father of three to be transported to Humansdorp from St Albans Prison, where he is being held.
Evans faces a Schedule 6 charge of premeditated murder.
It is the state's case that he beat 36-year-old Van Rensburg to death with an object likened to an alcohol bottle.
Her body was discovered during the early hours of April 20.
Evans has meanwhile maintained his innocence.
During cross-examination last week, Roelofse questioned Kato's investigation of the matter.
Highlighting some of the alleged short sightings, Roelofse said no measurements were taken of the broken bottle found at the scene to compare to Van Rensburg's wounds.
He said while the bottle was shown to the pathologist, she had not conclusively stated that it was indeed the weapon used.
Roelofse further challenged the state's version that Evans had attempted to clean up the crime scene.
The court heard further that on the day Van Rensburg's body was found, Kato had already ruled out forced entry or a robbery.
Another point of contention was Kato's decision to seize Evans' cellphone despite the state initially denying that the Gqeberha entrepreneur was told he was a suspect from the outset.

Project manager working on Sanral project kidnapped on Addo Road
A project manager working on the multimillion-rand Sanral project to upgrade the R335 between Motherwell and Addo has been kidnapped. The man, employed by one of the companies contracted by Sanral, was abducted on Wednesday morning. Police spokesperson Brigadier Nobuntu Gantana said the Swartkops police were notified of a kidnapping on Addo Road near Monument Crossing at about 10.30am. A case of kidnapping is being investigated. ' It is alleged that a 37-year-old male was busy on a construction site on Addo Road when a white Mercedes sedan stopped next to him. 'Two [men] got out and then forced him into the Mercedes and drove off with him. 'One of the [men] also took [the victim's] white Toyota Hilux bakkie, which was found abandoned again in Ikamvelihle a short while later. 'No ransom demands have been made yet,' Gantana said. Eastern Cape premier Oscar Mabuyane has previously spoken out about attacks on the construction project. During his state of the province address in 2024, he revealed that 'construction mafias' had threatened to stop the upgrade, demanding R450,000 a month in protection fees. The road is a vital citrus export route from the Sundays River Valley municipality to Nelson Mandela Bay's two ports. The project is divided in two, with the first phase cutting across wards 53, 54, 55, 56 and 23 in Motherwell. The second phase is from Addo to Ngqweba (formerly Kirkwood). A source close to the project said the assailants had visited the area for the second time in the space of a week. 'Last week Friday, the site manager for phase two of the project [had a gun pointed at him] by unknown people who came on site and made some demands. 'Since that incident, the site manager left and has not returned to work,' he said. 'And now today the project manager employed by the same company has been abducted. 'This has been an ongoing problem here in Motherwell. 'At one point last year people came and demanded a monthly protection fee of R450,000 which meant the project had to temporarily be stopped for safety reasons.' A second source said they were concerned for the kidnapped manager's safety and the repercussions this would have for the project. 'From what I heard, the guys came last week and shot in the air and on the road to scare people. 'The fear by residents and councillors is that the project might have to be closed because threats are not happening for the first time and people's lives are at risk. Cape Town couple ‘used daughters to produce child pornography'
Police, assisted by the FBI, arrested a couple in Bloubergstrand for allegedly sexually abusing their daughters aged three and eight to produce child pornography in Cape Town. The 47-year-old woman and 48-year-old man were arrested at a 'residence identified through joint investigative efforts' on Tuesday, said police spokesperson Lt-Col Amanda van Wyk. 'The suspects face many charges, including the production of child sexual abuse material (commonly referred to as child pornography), rape, sexual assault and sexual grooming. 'The victims were rescued during the operation and have been placed in a place of safety,' said Van Wyk. The arrests were carried out by a multidisciplinary team including members of the national and Western Cape serial and electronic crime investigations units, the department of social development, supported by the FBI and homeland security investigations. Van Wyk said several electronic devices were seized during the bust and the investigation continues. Bricks of cocaine worth R18m and guns seized in Cape Town CBD
Fifteen bricks of cocaine worth an estimated R18m have been seized with several firearms from a storage facility in the Cape Town CBD. The police raid on a self-storage facility in Roeland Street on Tuesday also led to the arrest of a 40-year-old man for allegedly dealing in drugs and the unlawful possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition. 'Armed with intelligence about drugs and firearms being stored at the address, the officers operationalised the information and pounced on the self-storage facility where they found the suspect at one of the units,' said spokesperson Capt Frederick van Wyk. ' They conducted a search of the unit upon which they discovered 15 bricks of cocaine of about 15kg [1kg each] with an estimated street value of R18m as well as one AK-47 rifle, an Uzi, five 9mm pistols and an assortment of ammunition.' The suspect is expected to appear in the Cape Town magistrate's court soon. The bust was the culmination of an intelligence-led operation by members of the police anti-gang unit, crime intelligence and provincial organised crime detectives. Western Cape police commissioner Lt-Gen Thembisile Patekile said the drugs and firearms could have caused havoc in the wrong hands in communities where gang and gun violence are prevalent. TimesLIVE
