Tornado warnings issued for parts of south-central Manitoba on Monday night

CBC22-07-2025
Some parts of south-central Manitoba are under a tornado warning on Monday night.
The rural municipality of Macdonald, including the communities of Brunkild, Starbuck and La Salle, and the rural municipality of Morris, including Rosenort and Aubigny, are under a tornado warning issued by Environment and Climate Change Canada shortly before 7 p.m. Monday.
Damaging wings, large hail and intense spots of rainfall are also possible during the storm, the warnings say.
People in those areas are advised to take cover immediately if threatening weather nears. Anyone who observes threatening weather — such as a roaring sound, a funnel cloud, and/or swirling or flying debris — should take shelter as soon as possible.
Once inside, ECCC advises going into a room on the lowest floor that's outside from walls or windows, such as a basement, bathroom, stairwell or interior closet.
The weather agency also says people in the impacted regions should leave mobile homes, vehicles, tents, trailers and other temporary or free-standing structures, and move to a strong building if possible.
The cities of Winnipeg and Portage la Prairie, as well as the Interlake region, are also under a severe thunderstorm watch issued shortly before 7 p.m., according to ECCC.

Edmonton weather: Temperatures near record highs today and Friday

The heat streak continues right into the start of the long weekend as afternoon highs in Edmonton get up around 30 C. We hit 29.8 C for a high Thursday in the city and should be a couple degrees hotter in the coming days. I'm going with highs of 31 C today, 32 C Friday and 30 C Saturday. That'll put us close to the record highs for those I think today is our best chance. Here are those record highs: 31.3 in 2021 - July 31 33.3 in 1922 - Aug. 1 33.9 in 1922 - Aug. 2 Mainly sunny skies continue to dominate the Edmonton area and most of the province for the next few days. (once again) see some scattered thunderstorms developing in the foothills this afternoon and possibly in NW Alberta tonight. Friday looks slightly more interesting with a high potential for some thunderstorms (possibly severe) in the Edson/Whitecourt/Swan Hills regions. At this looks like all of that will stay west of Edmonton. The weekend setup is packed with uncertainty in regards to timing, location and intensity of showers/thunderstorms. Bottom line: I think we'll probably see at least SOME scattered showers/thunderstorms in the Edmonton region. But, it doesn't look like we're in for a complete washout. The heat sticks around for Saturday and the thunderstorm risk doesn't come until the evening/late-night hours. Sunday and Monday are still warm (highs in the mid 20s) and we're looking at a 'Mix of sun & cloud' for most of the daytime hours with about a 40 per cent chance of a few scattered showers. Elsewhere around the province: Showers and thunderstorms in the foothills and in NW Alberta Friday afternoon/evening. Rain in southern Alberta and the southern mountain parks on Sunday. Rain in eastern Alberta on Monday. Here's the forecast for Edmonton and area: Today - Mainly sunny. High: 31 Tonight - Mainly clear. 9pm: 26 Friday - Mainly sunny. Morning Low: 17 Afternoon High: 32 Saturday - Partly cloudy. 30% chance of a late-day shower or thunderstorm. Morning Low: 17 Afternoon High: 30 Sunday - Mix of sun & cloud. 40% chance of a shower. Morning Low: 17 Afternoon High: 26 Monday - Mix of sun & cloud. 30% chance of a shower. Morning Low: 14 Afternoon High: 25 Tuesday - Partly cloudy. Morning Low: 13 Afternoon High: 25

Prairie wildfire smoke is causing poor air quality in Hamilton, southern Ontario: Environment Canada

Social Sharing Smoke from wildfires in the Prairies is causing poor air quality and reduced visibility in the Hamilton-Niagara area and much of southern Ontario, Environment Canada says. The federal agency says people should limit time outdoors and consider rescheduling outdoor activities. Its special weather statement covers the southwestern part of the province from Sault Ste. Marie and Parry Sound, south to the Great Lakes and as far east as Kingston. Most of northwestern Ontario is also affected. Smoke levels can change hourly and "as smoke levels increase, health risks increase," Environment Canada said, adding air quality is expected to improve from north to south today. In Hamilton, the air-quality health index is forecast to reach seven Thursday, which is considered "high risk," before dropping down to a "moderate" four overnight. Smoke can cause eye, ear, nose and throat irritation, headaches or a mild cough, Environment Canada says. It can also cause chest pains and wheezing. The agency says seniors, pregnant people, kids and babies, people with health conditions and those who work outdoors should reduce activity outdoors and seek medical help if experiencing symptoms. It adds that when indoors, people should keep their windows closed as much as possible, but that during extreme heat, it's best to prioritize keeping cool. Hamilton was just under a heat warning, which the medical officer of health ended Thursday morning. Wearing a respirator and using an indoor air cleaner are ways Environment Canada says one can reduce exposure to pollution.

Toronto air quality second worst in the world due to wildfire smoke

People take in a city view of Toronto on Monday July 14, 2025. The Air Quality Health Index rating for Toronto was over 10, or "very high risk,"from wildfire smoke on Monday morning. THE CANADIAN PRESS/Chris Young Toronto's air quality is currently the second worst in the world as an Environment Canada alert for the city remains in effect due to wildfire smoke. According to Swiss air quality tracker IQAir, the only place globally with worse air than Toronto is Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of the Congo. On Wednesday, as a heat warning that had been in effect for the city since Saturday finally lifted, Environment Canada issued a special air quality statement for Toronto as wildfires burned in the Prairies. 'As smoke levels increase, health risks increase. Limit time outdoors. Consider reducing or rescheduling outdoor sports, activities and events,' the federal weather agency wrote in the alert. Environment Canada's air quality index is currently listed at a level 5, which it says represents a moderate risk. The air quality could climb as high as a level 7—which is high risk—before clearing from north to south later this evening. 'You may experience mild and common symptoms such as eye, nose and throat irritation, headaches or a mild cough. More serious but less common symptoms include wheezing, chest pains or severe cough. If you think you are having a medical emergency, seek immediate medical assistance,' the agency said. READ MORE: Wildfire smoke could create health risks for Toronto residents this summer. Here is why doctors say you should be careful This is the second time this month that Toronto's air quality has been listed among the worst in the world. On July 14, the city had the second-worst air behind Baghdad, Iraq as wildfires burned in northern Ontario and the Prairies. Outside of the smoky skies, Thursday's forecast is calling for a high of 23 C in Toronto, which will feel like 25 with humidity, and a 60 per cent chance of showers this morning. This weekend should see sunny skies in the city starting Friday with the temperature climbing to a high of 29 C on Sunday.
