Students urged to live drug-free lives at awareness meet
Addressing students of the Andhra Loyola College (ALC) at an awareness programme on 'Illicit Trafficking of Ganja and Drug Abuse', organised by the college, in collaboration with EAGLE on Thursday, Mr. Ravi Krishna said: 'You are the hope of this nation. Stay clean and fight the drug menace like a warrior. The courage to say 'No' today will shape your tomorrow,' he cautioned, warning against making poor choices in life. He encouraged students to become ambassadors of drug-free campuses and safeguard their future.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), NTR Police Commissionerate KGV Saritha spoke about the importance of community responsibility and vigilance in preventing drug abuse.
Superintendent of Police, EAGLE Nagesh Babu, urged students to report suspicious activities without fear and contribute towards building a safer society.
Director of CBS IAS Academy, M. Bala Latha, said that the students should remember that their minds are their greatest asset. 'Keep your mind sharp and free from anything that clouds your vision,' she cautioned.
Rector of the college Fr. P.R. John, founder director B. Bala and vice-principal G. Kiran Kumar also addressed students, emphasising the need to build a meaningful life rooted in ethical values.
Students who excelled in a certificate course on 'Narcotic Drugs: Awareness, Impact and Legal Frameworks' offered by the Department of Chemistry as part of the ethics and value education curriculum, were felicitated.
ALC principal S. Melchior, vice-principal B. Suresh and heads of departments of visual communication and chemistry Fr. G. Rayappa and K. Rayappa Reddy, teaching staff and others were present.

4 bros sentenced to 10-year imprisonment in murder case
Ballia: A court here has sentenced four brothers to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment for fatally attacking a man following a dispute over tree cutting in Manda village in 2020. Additional District Judge Gyan Prakash Tripathi also imposed a fine of Rs 16,000 each on the four brothers -Anil Kumar, Brijesh Kumar, Vicky Kumar, and Manoj Kumar, Superintendent of Police Om-vir Singh said. According to the prosecution, on June 26, 2020, Kanhaiya Ram was attacked with sticks and batons during a dispute over tree cutting in Manda village. He sustained serious injuries and later suc-cumbed to them. In another incident, a man allegedly killed his grandmother with a spade in Uttar Pradesh's Baghpat, police said on Wednesday. The accused, identified as Suraj Prajapati (24), has been arrested, police said. Additional Superintendent of Police Narendra Pratap Singh said the police received information around 9 pm on Tuesday that Phoolo Devi (85) was killed in the Pusar village under the Doghat po-lice station. Preliminary investigation suggests that Suraj has been mentally unstable for the past nine months, with family members reporting erratic behaviour, officials said. According to officials, a verbal altercation took place between the two shortly before the incident. In a fit of rage, Suraj allegedly struck his grandmother on the head with a spade, killing her on the spot. The accused has been giving inconsistent statements during interrogation, further indicating signs of mental imbalance, officials said.

UP Police to investigate all cyber frauds regardless of amount of money; more reforms on way
Lucknow, Jul 30 (PTI) The Uttar Pradesh police chief on Wednesday announced a series of reforms in the state's cybercrime response, one of which was the removal of the Rs 5 lakh threshold for filing FIRs in online fraud cases. Director General of Police Rajeev Krishna revealed the changes during the inauguration of a call centre here for the National Cybercrime Helpline Number 1930. The call centre has been set up at Kalli Paschim under the DCP South office and replaces the earlier 20-seat facility at the UP 112 headquarters. The new facility will have 30 lines and give round-the-clock assistance to victims of financial cybercrimes. A total of 94 police personnel, from constables to inspectors, have been deployed here, with 50 callers to work in shifts. Krishna told reporters that complaints received at the call centre will reflect in real-time on the platforms of the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C), the Cyber Crime Headquarters, and district police units. The DGP also said that the former practice of registering an FIR only in cyber frauds involving over Rs 5 lakh has been discontinued. With the establishment of 57 new cyber police stations in 2023, all forms of online fraud, regardless of the amount involved, will be investigated, he said. In addition, the state police have written to the government proposing an amendment to the IT Act that would empower sub-inspectors to investigate cyber offences. 'At present, only inspectors are authorised to conduct such investigations, often resulting in delays in FIR registration and case disposal,' he said. Another key proposal is to allow victims to reclaim money frozen during the investigation of online fraud without having to file an FIR. The officer said, 'The proposal has been submitted to the state government and is currently under review in the Allahabad High Court. If accepted, this would allow police to release blocked funds based on a simple application from the victim.' He said that now each of the seven zonal police headquarters in the state will have a designated cyber expert, referred to as a 'Cyber Commando.' 'These officers will assist in cyber investigations across their respective zones. Fifteen such officers have already completed a specialised six-month course offered by the I4C in collaboration with national institutions.

Court slams police for insisting on identity disclosure in minor's abortion case
The Bombay High Court has permitted a medical practitioner to carry out the termination of the pregnancy of a minor girl without disclosing her identity, pulling up the police for continuing to insist on such disclosure despite clear judicial rulings to the contrary.A bench comprising Justice Revati Mohite Dere and Justice Neela Gokhale was hearing a petition filed by a gynecologist on behalf of a minor who had become pregnant following a consensual relationship. The doctor sought court permission to perform the abortion, as the pregnancy was at 13 weeks — well within the legal limit under the Medical Termination of Pregnancy (MTP) Act, 1971 — while maintaining the minor's Meenaz Kakalia, representing the petitioner, argued that forcing the disclosure of the minor's identity would breach her right to privacy and reproductive autonomy, both protected under Article 21 of the Constitution. She cited the Supreme Court's interpretation of the MTP Act and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, asserting that registered medical practitioners are not required to reveal the identity of minors even while submitting mandatory POCSO reports. While granting the requested relief, the High Court expressed concern that medical professionals still felt compelled to seek judicial intervention in such cases due to ongoing pressure from police authorities.'We are quite surprised that, despite the clear finding of the Supreme Court as well as of this Court, repeatedly holding that in the facts of such cases, the identity of the minor girl need not be insisted upon to be revealed, the Doctors concerned are compelled to approach this Court for such permissions as the Police insist upon the doctors to reveal the name and identity of the minor victims. This is nothing but harassment of the doctors as well as the minor victims,' the bench prevent further violations and ensure consistent application of the law, the Court directed that a copy of its order, along with the relevant Supreme Court ruling, be circulated to all police stations across Maharashtra.
