
13th edition of Tiger Cup 2025 sees debut of girls' league
The 13th edition of the Tiger Cup 2025, a cricket tournament for the under-12, under-14 and under-16 categories, was inaugurated in Bengaluru, this time with a special announcement on the launch of a girls' cricket tournament.
Scheduled to take place from April 21 to May 13, the tournament, supported by Cycle Pure Agarbathi, began with the lighting of a 6-foot Agarbathi by the girls participating in the tournament. Officials of JSS Academy of Technical Education and cricket expert Joseph Hoover were at the event.
Featuring under-12, under-14, and under-16 categories, matches started at JSS Academy of Technical Education with teams from Bengaluru, Mysuru, Dharwad, Koppal and Belgaum participating.
Raising awareness on wildlife
Created by renowned cricket players Sandeep Patil, Harbhajan Singh, and Yusuf Pathan, the Tiger Cup Tournament brings 56 talented teams together, including more than 900 players from all around India. According to a press release, the 13th edition of the Tiger Cup 2025 will be dedicated to raising awareness on the importance of conserving wildlife. The proceeds of the event will be donated towards forest foot soldiers for their commendable service in protecting the forests and wildlife in the country, the release noted.
On the final day of the tournament, ₹1 lakh each will be awarded to two forest staff from Karnataka, one from Kerala, and one from Tamil Nadu, to honour their dedication to wildlife conservation. Additionally, Rs. 1 lakh has been earmarked to support the participation of girls in the tournament.

Speaking on the occasion, Arjun Ranga, Managing Director of Cycle Pure Agarbathi, said, 'We are proud to host the 13th edition of the Tiger Cup 2025, which, for the first time, includes felicitation of the forest staff and a dedicated girls' cricket category. The tournament also continues to honour the unwavering dedication of our forest staff, who work relentlessly to protect India's rich biodiversity.'
Hoover noted that the Tiger Cup 2025 is a celebration of budding cricketing talent. 'It's wonderful to see the inclusion of the 'girls' category' in this edition. It reflects the true spirit of the sport – one that's inclusive, inspiring and full of opportunity. It's been a privilege to witness young talents take their first steps towards greatness through this platform, and I wish them all the best in their journey ahead,' he said.

Delhi Minister Parvesh Verma praised India's up-and-coming chess players at the event and offered his best wishes to the young players. Minister Verma said at the inauguration, 'The first Grandmaster Delhi Chess Tournament has been inaugurated. I convey my best wishes to all the children. India is very proud of the achievements of all our children, whether it is our Gukesh (Dommaraju) or Vaishali (Rameshbabu).' He further praised the organisers' and the chess fraternity's efforts in nurturing young talent and bringing the game to such a prominent stage. 'Many congratulations to all, and I convey my best wishes to the Federation and the Association for organising such a good tournament here at such a good level,' he added. With a record prize pool of Rs 1.21 crore, the Delhi International Open Grandmasters chess tournament is all set for its 21st edition from June 7 to 14 at Tivoli Gardens, Chattarpur, New Delhi. A marquee calendar event on the FIDE World Championship Circuit, the tournament has played a pivotal role in shaping the rise of India's chess stars, including past winners Arjun Erigaisi and Aravindh Chithambaram, R Praggnanandhaa, and World Champion Gukesh Dommaraju, who earned his final GM norm here to become a Grandmaster. Organised under the aegis of the All India Chess Federation, the Delhi GM Open has grown into the largest classical-format chess tournament in Asia by participation. This year, the Delhi GM Open will host over 2,500 players from over 15 countries, including 20 Grandmasters, competing across three rating-based categories. The prize pool marks a 168 per cent increase from last year's edition. Category A has a Rs 51 lakh prize pool and is open to internationally rated players. Categories B and C, for players rated below 1900 and 1700, respectively, will offer Rs 35 lakh each. All matches will follow FIDE rules and the FIDE Swiss System format, with 10 rounds in every section. Category A games will follow a classical time control of 90 minutes plus a 30-second increment from move one, with the top three prizes set at Rs7,00,000, Rs6,00,000, and Rs5,00,000 respectively. The top ten finishers in this category will each receive Rs 1,00,000 or more, while special prizes of Rs 1,00,000 each will be awarded to the Best Female Player and Best Foreign Player. Category B and C games will follow a 60-minute-plus-30-second time limit and 30-minute-plus-30-second formats, respectively. Entry is free for Grandmasters, International Masters, Women Grandmasters, and Women International Masters. (ANI)

Karnataka CM increases compensation for Bengaluru stampede victims' families to Rs 25 lakh each
Bengaluru (Karnataka) [India], June 7 (ANI): Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has ordered an increase in the compensation announced for the families of those who died in the Chinnaswamy Stadium stampede in Bengaluru to Rs 25 lakh each. Earlier, the government had announced a compensation of Rs 10 lakh each. Union Minister Pralhad Joshi demanded that CM Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar should 'resign right now' in connection with the June 4 stampede near Bengaluru's Chinnaswamy Stadium that claimed 11 lives and left dozens injured. Joshi told reporters, 'The state government should bear moral responsibility. Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar should not continue on his position even for a moment. CM and Deputy CM should resign right now.' Earlier, top senior officials of Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA), Secretary A Shankar and Treasurer ES Jairam, tendered their resignations, taking 'moral responsibility' for the stampede that took place near M Chinnaswamy Stadium on Wednesday ahead of Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) team's felicitation after winning their Indian Premier League (IPL) title by defeating Punjab Kings (PBKS) in a tight final on Tuesday. Meanwhile, a Bengaluru Sessions Court on Friday remanded four individuals, including senior Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) official Nikhil Sosale and three event managers, to 14 days of judicial custody in connection with the stampede. They were arrested in a joint operation by the Cubbon Park police and the Central Crime Branch (CCB) at Kempegowda International Airport in the early hours of June 6 (Friday). Earlier in the day, the Karnataka High Court granted interim relief to the office bearers of the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA), who had approached the court seeking the quashing of the FIR registered against them in connection with the an interim order, the court directed the state police not to take any coercive action against them until further orders. The High Court adjourned the case to June 9. KSCA President Raghu Ram Bhat, Secretary A Shankar, Treasurer ES Jairam, and other KSCA office bearers moved the High Court seeking to quash the FIR. Nikhil Sosale also approached the High Court to challenge his arrest. He claimed that he was arrested without any materials and even before the police had conducted a preliminary enquiry. He has thus sought to declare his arrest as illegal. On Thursday, the Bengaluru police registered an FIR against the RCB franchise, DNA Entertainment Pvt. Ltd., an event management company, and the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) for culpable homicide, illegal assembly, and other serious charges. A day after the stampede , the Karnataka police suspended multiple IPS officers, including the Bengaluru city police Commissioner, B Dayananda. Apart from Dayananda, Additional Commissioner of Police Vikash Kumar Vikash, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central) Shekhar HT, Assistant Commissioner of Police Balakrishna and Cubbon Park Police Inspector Girish AK were also suspended with immediate effect. AMC plans Rs 30cr mini sports complex in Gota
Ahmedabad: The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has decided to build a mini sports complex in Gota on part of final plot number 162 of TP Scheme No. 32. An expenditure of Rs 30.49 crore will be incurred on the project, said an AMC official. The proposal will be presented for approval at the road and building committee meeting scheduled for June 9. Preparations are underway for Ahmedabad city to potentially host the Olympics in 2036. In light of the Olympics impact, the civic body is planning to establish new sports infrastructure in every zone of the city. The corporation plans to set up five major sports complexes in Gota, Bopal, Ranip, Naroda, and Nikol, with an estimated cost ranging from Rs 200 to Rs 250 crore. Tenders for the construction of these five sports complexes were floated recently, and these tenders are now being presented for approval.
