Thousands to join US ‘Fight the Trump Takeover' protests against Republican redistricting plans
Americans in dozens of states are staging rallies Saturday against plans by US President Donald Trump and Republican leaders to redraw congressional maps ahead of the 2026 midterm elections, The Guardian reported. The demonstrations, held under the banner 'Fight the Trump Takeover', are taking place in at least 34 states. The largest event is in Austin, Texas, where Trump has supported a mid-decade redistricting plan that could give Republicans five extra seats in Congress. 'Fight the Trump Takeover' protests set to rock 20 states this weekend. Thank you for organizing these events. Power to the people who comprehend facts and really care about this country. — lonnieframe(fo) (@SaBurchul) August 15, 2025 Other states may also redraw their districts. According to The Guardian, Republican leaders in Florida, Missouri and Ohio are weighing similar moves, while California's Democratic governor, Gavin Newsom, has said he will launch a counter-redistricting effort. The Democratic National Committee is supporting today's protests. It said: 'From coast to coast, people will be showing up at their statehouses, city halls, and community spaces to make it clear – we see what Trump is doing, and we won't stand for it.' Activist groups such as Indivisible, MoveOn and Planned Parenthood are also involved. Ezra Levin of Indivisible told The Guardian: 'In the fight against authoritarianism, not every single protest needs to match the scale of the one before it. What matters is sustaining the pressure.' Drucilla Tigner, of Texas For All, added: 'Though this fight started in Texas, it doesn't end here. This isn't just about redistricting or one state's politics. It's about the future of our democracy.'
