Meditation, daily conversations with his parents, and the occasional episode of Doraemon—Ujjawal Kesari's unconventional approach to JEE Advanced paid off handsomely, helping him secure an impressive All India Rank (AIR) 5 on his very first attempt.Born and brought up in Delhi, with roots in Bihar, Ujjawal studied at Birla Vidya Niketan. His father works in placement services, and his mother is a homemaker. His elder sister is a history researcher at a think tank. "I have seen my parents struggle to provide me with the best. That kept me going—I wanted to get into a good college and make them proud," he told TOI.Starting his preparation in Class XI, Ujjawal stuck to a disciplined routine of 10–12 hours of daily study, giving equal time to all three subjects. He relied on a combination of coaching and self-study, with NCERT as his go-to resource for JEE Main.Despite the high-pressure environment, he consciously avoided getting overwhelmed. "I never took pressure from competition. I spoke to my parents every night about whatever I was going through," he said. "Meditation helped me stay calm, and I would watch Doraemon when I needed a break."On his approach to tough topics, Ujjawal was relentless. "I'd keep trying until I understood it," he said.His message to future aspirants: "Stay focused and don't get distracted by phones or the internet. These years won't come back."Delhi zone's Rajit Gupta bagged the top rank in IIT entrance JEE advanced, results of which were announced on Monday.'A total of 1,80,422 candidates appeared in both papers 1 and 2 in JEE (Advanced) held on May 18. In the exam, 54378 candidates have qualified,' a senior official said.'Out of the total qualified candidates, 9404 are female candidates,' he added.Rajit Gupta of IIT Delhi zone is the top ranker in the Common Rank List (CRL). He obtained 332 out of 360 marks.Devdutta Majhi of IIT Kharagpur zone is the top-ranked female candidate with CRL 16. She obtained 312 out of 360 marks.(with TOI inputs)

Tribal girl from TN's Kalvarayan Hills makes it to IIT, realises late father's dream
CHENNAI: When A Rajeshwari, a tribal girl, walks on the hallowed corridors of an Indian Institute of Technology soon, she will be living her own dream, and one her father held close to his heart till he succumbed to cancer a year ago. A Aundi, her dad who belonged to the Malayali (Scheduled Tribe) community of Karumandurai, a village located 65km from Salem in the Kalvarayan Hills with a 90% tribal population, could study only up to Class 8 due to poverty and seasonal migration. Determined that his four children should have a different future, Aundi took up tailoring and toiled hard to provide them with a stable education, ably supported by his wife Kavitha. He succeeded in making his first two children undergraduates, which in itself is no mean feat. If he had not died in 2024, Aundi would have not only witnessed the proudest moment of his life but also the beginning of a transformation in the lives of his family as his third child Rajeshwari will make history by becoming the first tribal student from a Government Tribal Residential School run by the state government to enter into an IIT, most likely IIT-Madras. The girl from Government Tribal Residential Higher Secondary School in Karumandurai, has secured an all-India rank of 417 under the Scheduled Tribes category in the JEE Advanced results published on Monday.

72 from Haryana's Super-100 programme clear JEE advanced
As many as 72 out of 193 students enrolled in the Super-100 programme in Kurukshetra, run by the Haryana government in partnership with the NGO Vikalp, have qualified the JEE Advanced examination this year. The programme, aimed at supporting students from underprivileged backgrounds, recorded a success rate of 37%. Naveen Mishra, who heads the Kurukshetra centre, said the achievement reflects the transformative potential of the initiative. Sharing a particularly moving moment, he recalled how the father of Muskan, a student from Dinod village in Bhiwani, visited him to express gratitude. 'He told me they own just one acre of land and have five daughters. Affording even a basic private school was a struggle,' Mishra said. Muskan, who secured an All India Rank (AIR) of 1,383 in the EWS (economically weaker section) category, is now hopeful of a seat in an IIT. Another student, Sufta Parveen from Faridabad, earned AIR 1,630 in the EWS category. Speaking over the phone, she credited the programme's rigorous schedule and dedicated teachers for her success. 'We attended classes from 9 am to 7 pm, followed by self-study till midnight. I joined the programme after hearing about it from a friend and cracking the entrance test,' she said. 'My father works in a private factory and my mother is a homemaker. This journey would not have been possible without the support of Naveen sir and his team,' she added. Ravinder Jangra from Khatkar in Jind emerged as the programme's top performer, securing AIR 212 in the OBC category and overall AIR 1,267. Coming from a farming family with limited resources, he said the programme changed the course of his life. 'I had taken admission in Class 11 with Arts subjects. After qualifying for Super-100, I shifted to the non-medical stream. Without this opportunity, I would've had to continue with Arts and let go of my dream.' The Super-100 programme was launched in 2018 by Naveen Mishra, a native of Madhubani in Bihar and an IIT Delhi alumnus. Despite twice reaching the UPSC interview stage, Mishra chose to dedicate himself to educational upliftment. Since its inception, six batches of students from the programme have appeared for JEE Advanced, with many achieving remarkable success against difficult odds.
