Kosovo offers incentives to attract Malaysian investments in key sectors

Kosovo, the landlocked Balkan country, is seeking Malaysian investments across a wide-range of sectors including information and communication technology, renewable energy as well as manufacturing, visiting Kosovo President Dr Vjosa Osmani Sadriu said today.
Despite Kosovo's small size, she said sweeteners to lure Malaysian investments included access to the lucrative consumer base in excess of 600 million people based on the country's free trade agreements with the entire European continent.
'This means that investing in Kosovo offers the same opportunities as investing across Europe,' she said, alluding to Kosovo's efforts to consolidate its economy through FDIs and build up its somewhat fragmented industrial and manufacturing sector.
'With the ease of doing business, Kosovo has the youngest population in Europe which is multilingual and tech-savvy, along with labour costs being much lower than in other European countries,' she told Bernama in an interview here today.
This coupled with numerous incentives for foreign direct investment offers significant potential for Malaysian businesses, said Osmani, who is on a four-day official visit to Malaysia.
During her visit, she met representatives from the National Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Malaysia (NCCIM) to discuss investment opportunities Kosovo offers to Malaysian businesses. Although no agreements were signed during the visit, discussions are ongoing and progress is being made, she said.
The Kosovian President said the first step would be to hold a joint economic forum with businesses from Kosovo and Malaysia to help identify key areas for a future trade agreement.
'Our teams are actively discussing potential areas of cooperation and I hope Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim will visit our country soon to help finalise these agreements,' she said.
She said she expects a direct flight between the Kosovian capital of Pristina and Kuala Lumpur in the future which would significantly ease communication and travel between the two countries, which established diplomatic ties in 2011.
Osmani arrived in Malaysia on Thursday, her first visit to the country since assuming office on April 4, 2021.
Malaysia officially recognised Kosovo on Oct 30, 2008, becoming one of the first Asian countries to do so, with formal diplomatic relations established on March 18, 2011.
'Even now, connections are quite good, mostly through Istanbul with other daily routes available as well. However, direct flights are always a more convenient way to enhance communication and travel,' she said.
She also highlighted the appeal of regional tourism packages that include Kosovo, Albania and Montenegro, which are gaining popularity among ASEAN tourists.
Osmani said Kosovo was looking to increase its exports globally, including to Malaysia, particularly in the ICT sector.
'Of course, Europe has been the main hub for our exports so far, but in the past couple of years, exports have quadrupled to the United States and several other countries.
'Our businesses are now looking for new markets where they can export their products, and I believe that once the joint economic forum takes place and businesses begin engaging with one another, they will be able to identify the specific needs in this part of the world,' she said.
Osmani said Kosovo is also seeking to expand exports to Malaysia, particularly in the food and energy sectors besides ICT.
'Our businesses are already exporting to Europe, the United States and Africa. We see Malaysia and the broader ASEAN region as important new markets,' she said.
Last year, trade between Malaysia and Kosovo amounted to RM28.55 million, with Malaysia's exports valued at RM25.92 million and imports at RM2.63 million. — BERNAMA

Techstore secures RM7.7m contract from Royal Malaysian Customs for RTS Link project

PUCHONG: Enterprise IT services provider, TechStore Bhd, via its wholly-owned subsidiary, Tech-Store Malaysia Sdn Bhd, has accepted a letter of award (LoA) from the Royal Malaysian Customs Department for the provision of leasing and training services for four units of baggage scanner machines and two units of body scanner machines with accessories for RM7.7 million. The equipment will be deployed at the Woodlands North Customs, Immigration, and Quarantine (CIQ) in Singapore, as part of the RTS Link between Malaysia and Singapore. TechStore managing director Tan Hock Lim said the RTS Link represents a significant advancement in cross-border transportation infrastructure connecting Malaysia and Singapore. 'The award reflects the government's trust in our capabilities to deliver reliable enterprise IT systems for high-security border control and inspection,' he said in a statement. The LoA further expands TechStore's involvement in the RTS Link project, which encompasses design consultation for depot equipment and service vehicles, uninterruptible power supply, and the RTS enterprise resource planning work packages, as well as the project for fit-out works for Malaysian agencies at Woodlands North CIQ. 'Our growing portfolio in key national railway projects continues to reinforce TechStore's standing as a trusted enterprise IT partner in the sector. 'Beyond the RTS Link, we are involved in major initiatives such as the LRT Kelana Jaya Line, LRT Ampang Line, MRT Kajang Line, and the ongoing LRT3. 'With the government's increasing push toward public transport digitalisation, we see growing demand for integrated, secure, and localised enterprise IT solutions. 'Our group remains focused on deepening our subject matter expertise, and is targeting larger and more complex transportation projects in Johor and Penang, in line with our strategy to support the digital transformation of Malaysia's transport ecosystem,' Tan said. The group's unbilled order book remains healthy at RM135.3 million as of May 31, 2025, supported by a robust job pipeline with a tender book totalling RM1.2 billion. To recap, TechStore was listed on the ACE Market of Bursa Malaysia on February 18, 2025 and has successfully raised a total of RM25.0 million in proceeds to accelerate its growth plans and enhance its capacity to undertake larger-scale projects.

Dewan Rakyat passes Poisons (Amendment) Bill 2025 to curb substance misuse

KUALA LUMPUR: The Dewan Rakyat has passed the Poisons (Amendment) Bill 2025, reinforcing enforcement against the illegal use of poisons and psychotropic substances. The bill, approved via voice vote, was debated by 12 MPs from both government and opposition blocs. Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad stated that the amendments aim to enhance enforcement efficiency and align Malaysian laws with international conventions. 'This amendment is important to align the country's laws with international conventions such as the Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs 1961 and the United Nations Convention Against Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances 1988.' Key changes include empowering authorised officers, improving training and monitoring, and tightening controls on poisons and prohibited substances, including those in vape products. Dzulkefly clarified that the amendments prevent overlapping jurisdiction among agencies. 'Drug enforcement officers focus on handling poisons and psychotropic substances related to medicines and industrial chemicals. The police monitor abuse of banned substances, while customs control the entry and exit of these substances at national entry points.' The bill redefines 'authorised officer' to include police officers of any rank and individuals appointed by the Health Minister. It also expands the definition of 'premises' to cover land, buildings, offshore installations, and other structures. Earlier, the Dewan Rakyat passed the Fees (Pengkalan Kubor Ferry) (Validation) Bill 2025 to legitimise un-gazetted ferry service fees collected from 1999 to 2024. - Bernama

Thailand and Cambodia agree to immediate ceasefire amid border tensions

PUTRAJAYA: Thailand and Cambodia have agreed to an immediate and unconditional ceasefire to ease tensions along their disputed border, following a high-level meeting chaired by Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. The agreement was reached during a special session at the Seri Perdana Complex, attended by Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and Thailand's acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai. The ceasefire takes effect from midnight on July 28, marking a crucial step toward de-escalation. 'Prime Minister Hun Manet and acting Prime Minister Phumtham have expressed their positions and willingness for an immediate ceasefire and return to normalcy,' Anwar said during a joint press conference. Malaysia, as the current ASEAN Chair, will coordinate an observer team to monitor compliance. 'Malaysia stands ready to verify and ensure its implementation,' Anwar added. The foreign and defence ministers of both nations will work with Malaysia to establish a detailed mechanism for ceasefire enforcement and reporting. An informal meeting between regional military commanders is scheduled for July 29, followed by a General Border Committee (GBC) session in Cambodia on August 4. The talks also saw participation from US Ambassador Edgard Kagan and Chinese Ambassador Ouyang Yujing, reflecting international support for the peace process. US President Donald J. Trump reportedly engaged with leaders from both countries, advocating for a peaceful resolution. China, meanwhile, maintained close communication with all parties to encourage dialogue. The border dispute, spanning an 817-kilometre undemarcated stretch, has seen repeated clashes, including a fatal skirmish in May and renewed hostilities in late July. The ceasefire aims to prevent further escalation and foster long-term stability. - Bernama
