Mint2 days ago
Twenty-five-year-old Samantha Kimene from Ireland's Tipperary died last weekend in Spain's Tenerife weeks after collapsing at work, reported People.com on Sunday, quoting the Irish Mirror.
The report added that Kimene had collapsed at work three weeks ago and was taken to a hospital, where she was diagnosed with leukaemia and COVID-19.
Her uncle Arturs Kimens, with whom she was living at the time, said that Kimene had begun treatment, but it was "too late."
"She got the diagnosis too late. What happened was, they were just trying to do the treatment for her, and it was unsuccessful because her body couldn't take it," he told the Irish Mirror.
"She had COVID as well and the virus, or whatever it was, spread through her organs and just... she passed away, unfortunately," he added.
Arturs also stated that Kimene's mother – Inese, and he were in Tenerife to make arrangements to repatriate her to Ireland.
Kimene has had a chance to meet some of the friends his niece made in her new home while they were on the Spanish island of Tenerife.
"All the people here that I met, that she was working with, they're in absolute devastation. They're devastated that she's gone, they can't believe it," Arturs Kimens said.
He added, "And she meant everything to me. I loved her very much and I'm going to miss her."
He even had set up a GoFundMe fundraiser to support Kimene's family. "Please help us raise the funds to bring [her] body back to Ireland, back home for [the] funeral," he wrote.
Until Saturday, the GoFundMe has raised more than $25,000.
Paying tribute to Kimene, her employer, Paddy O'Kelly's Irish bar in Tenerife, posted a photo of the 25-year-old posing on a balcony in a black dress on Instagram.
They wrote, "It's with a heavy heart that our colleague and friend, Sam, has sadly passed away. She was a valued part of our team and will be deeply missed."
"A beautiful and kind human with the biggest smile," the message continued. "We're still in shock and heartbroken 💔. Please keep her family in your thoughts during this difficult time."
Paddy O'Kelly's directed people to her uncle's GoFundMe and also said the pub would be organizing a fundraiser of its own, added the People.com.
In its tribute post, the bar wrote, "Rest in Peace Sam. You will be greatly missed. Lots of love. Your Paddy O'Kellys family ☘️."

Jump rope for fun and fitness, a new community rises in Chennai

On Sunday morning, around two dozen individuals — a spirited mix of children, adults, and seniors — gathered at Dr. Natesan Park on Venkatanarayana Road in T. Nagar with one common goal: to jump-start their day with fun and fitness. Armed with colourful jump ropes, they quickly began swinging them and jumping in rhythm. On the other side stood the instructor, G. Aravindaakshan — a self-taught jump rope enthusiast and founder of Chennai Jumps — guiding the group through the nuances of rope jumping. Over the past few months, Chennai Jumps has hosted several workshops, including activities at Chitlapakkam Lake and Anna Nagar Tower Park, among others. 'Jump rope is a tool that is under rated and which is not spoken about. It has a lot of health benefits too,' Mr. Aravindaakshan said. He began skipping during the Covid pandemic and gradually discovered that this simple tool offered much more — with a variety of techniques and possibilities to explore. 'I learnt a lot of techniques from YouTube and Instagram and practiced regularly. This helps individuals physically and mentally. When you jump, your full focus shifts to yourself — where your hands need to be and how you need to jump,' he says. According to Mr. Aravindaakshan, jump rope is a highly accessible activity that can be done anytime, anywhere. 'All you need is a little space to jump,' he says. 'It's also budget-friendly — your only real investment is the rope itself.' Currently, Chennai Jumps includes participants in age ranging from just 5 years old to 66. In the coming months, Aravindaakshan plans to bring this activity to more public spaces and schools across the city. He intends to create a professional academy for jump rope. Mr. Aravindaakshan charges a nominal fee of ₹100 from those joining his community. 'My goal is to create awareness,' he says, 'but I also need to cover the cost of the ropes, so I charge this small amount.'

Equip libraries with digital resources, governor advises state universities

1 2 Lucknow: Governor Anandiben Patel on Tuesday asked all state universities to equip their libraries with digital resources to make quality study material available to students, researchers, and teachers. While signing an MoU with the Information and Library Network Centre (INFLIBNET) Centre for 38 state universities and higher learning institutions, Patel said, "Free flow of information is the need of the hour. This agreement will enhance the quality of education by connecting higher education institutions (HEIs) with national and international research." Stressing on the importance of prioritising research that is relevant, realistic, and socially beneficial, Patel urged universities to address the problems faced by farmers, women, children, rural areas, health, defence, and society. She advised technical universities, health centres, and research institutes to focus on innovations and patents. Giving the example of the vaccine developed by Indian scientists in a short time during the Covid period, the governor said, "We have the resources as well as the talent. If we work with commitment, we can make India a leader in the field of research." She added that the manuscripts available in university libraries prove that our sages and saints did very high-quality research work, which needs to be re-awakened and taken forward today. On the occasion, the governor was honoured for three world records. The first was for conducting Surya Namaskar on June 21 for 14 lakh participants. The second was for organising a mass reading campaign, 'Padhe Vishwavidyalaya/Mahavidyalaya, Badhe Vishwavidyalaya', which saw 15.7 lakh participants reading books.
