Keira Knightley says Pirates of the Caribbean gave her 'terrible actress' label
The Richmond-born actress, 40, starred as Elizabeth Swann in the three original Pirates films, which were released between 2003 and 2007.
Starring alongside Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow and Orlando Bloom as Will Turner, Keira shot to global fame in the role of Elizabeth aged just 18.
The first film, The Curse of the Black Pearl, grossed roughly £480million at the global box office upon release – equivalent to around £870m in 2025.
After two sequels – Dead Man's Chest and At World's End – the original trilogy had grossed almost £2billion when Keira first left the series in 2007.
But despite the major global success with movie fans, the Pirates franchise always found it hard to win critics over – and Keira says that problem stuck with her.
She told Vanity Fair: 'I think in the public consciousness, I was seen as a terrible actress [after Pirates of the Caribbean was released in cinemas].'
Keira spoke to the publication recently to mark the 20th anniversary of Pride & Prejudice, which she now regards as her first project that was acclaimed by audiences and critics alike.
'I had this phenomenally big success with Pirates. [But] I think Pride & Prejudice was the first one that was a phenomenally big success but was also critically acclaimed.
'[Pride & Prejudice was released] around the same time as Pirates 2. I got the worst reviews ever for that. But then [I was] nominated for an Oscar at the same time – it was, in my 21-year-old head, quite confusing.'
Keira starred as Lizzy Bennett in the 2005 adaptation of the Jane Austen 1813 novel, opposite Succession actor Matthew Macfadyen in the role of Mr. Darcy.
The acclaimed film also featured work from esteemed names such as Donald Sutherland, Carey Mulligan, Tom Hollander, Rosamund Pike, Judi Dench.
While the first three Pirates films were slapped with a mixed Rotten Tomatoes rating of 58% (on average), Pride & Prejudice was much more warmly received at 87%.
The films were loved by fans but were especially loathed by then-BBC film critic Mark Kermode – his co-host Simon Mayo famously started reading a newspaper instead of listening to one of Mark's signature rants about At World's End.
Speaking about Keira's performance during his review, Mark said: 'When Keira Knightley and Orlando Bloom are on screen together, it's like two chairs mating.'
Dubbing her 'Ikea Knightley', Mark apparently drew the ire of one Benedict Cumberbatch, who, according to Keira, defended her to the film critic's face and even gave him a punch on the arm.
She told Elle Magazine in 2014: 'When I saw Benedict, I said, 'Did you punch a journalist?' And he said he did. Everybody needs a friend like that.' More Trending
Around the time of the release of the first Pirates film, Keira was also working with Richard Curtis on the 2003 Christmas romance film Love, Actually.
Years later, Richard revealed that Keira had several worries about starring in the seafaring series, confessing that she thought it would sink rather than swim.
'I remember sitting down with Keira while we were shooting,' he told ABC News, before asking Knightley what her next project was.
Richard continued: 'She said, 'I don't think it's going to work. It's a pirate film, and they always fail'.'

Montrose football coach wins £3.5k on BBC music quiz show The Hit List
A Montrose football coach has won a £3,500 prize on a popular BBC music quiz show. Aimee Culley and dad Mark appeared on The Hit List on Saturday night. The programme, hosted by singers Rochelle and Marvin Humes, sees contestants name as many hit songs as they can to win up to £10,000. The father-daughter duo were up against Joel and Caitlin from Coventry and Sam and Hannah from Felixstowe. In the first round, the players had to name hits from the past five decades by identifying the songs from a brief clip. Aimee, who also played for Montrose from 2017 to 2024, and Mark successfully named three out of five songs. Then, teams were asked to guess songs that had won Brit Awards and were given the chance to guess another song to win a bonus point. It was easy work for Mark and Aimee, from Aberdeen, who identified songs by Pink, Eurythmics and Cliff Richard, as well as three bonus tracks. The Montrose Women's coach correctly named Lewis Capaldi's Grace to reach 10 points, meaning Sam and Hannah were eliminated. Next, the duo went head-to-head with Joe and Caitlin. With 45 seconds on the clock and three skip options, contestants were given a clue and the start of a track. They had to name songs as quickly as possible. Aimee and her dad stormed ahead in this round, successfully identifying songs by artists including The Beach Boys, Nelly Furtado and Charli XCX. They had 22 seconds and two skips left when Joe and Caitlin were knocked out. That left Aimee and Mark to take on the final round and play for £10,000 by naming 10 songs and artists. The more time they took, the less money they would end up with. It was a rocky start, with the money dropping to £9,310 before they guessed Christina Aguilera's Candyman. There was a tense moment as Aimee and Mark had to skip six songs they did not know as the clock ran down, finally identifying Facination by Alphabeat at the £4,562 mark. The pair finished strongly, only skipping two more songs before Aimee named Only Love Can Hurt Like This by Paloma Faith to secure £3,598, which she said would help her celebrate her birthday. Montrose FC Women congratulated the duo on Facebook, saying: 'The pair absolutely smashed it, walking away with a great win. 'Looks like that big birthday party invite is definitely in the post now. 'Well done Team Culley!'

Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) YOU would hardly think he is her type but Love Islander Olivia Hawkins has struck up an unlikely friendship with Celebs Go Dating co-star Mark Labbett. Despite their 29-year age gap, she says the pair have become close pals since joining the line-up for the E4 show's 14th series which starts tonight. Olivia, who is 5ft 4in to Mark's 6ft 6in, says: 'Who would have thought Mark 'The Beast' Labbett would be mates with Olivia from Love Island? You couldn't write it. But when he first entered the show, I was his first interaction and we hit it off. 'As soon as he walked in, I fell in love with him. 'He is just the sweetest, kindest . . . he's so tall but he's a teddy bear. He's so thoughtful. He's a puppy rather than a beast. 'There's so many elements to Mark that people will watch and just fall in love with. 'That is the beauty of this show — you get to see people out of their natural habitat. You get to see Mark dating, which you'd never get to see on The Chase.' The quizzer has shed TEN STONE over the past few years, as part of a lifestyle overhaul — and reckons this has made it easier attracting women. Talking about his weight loss, he says: 'It puts a spring in your step, for sure. It helps confidence. As a result, I can chat to just about anyone. 'I had what I called the four-foot rule when at my heaviest, in that no pretty girl would want to let you within four feet of her. It meant you never got really close to pretty people because on the outside looking in, it wasn't good. 'The difference now, compared to over the years . . . you're far more confident of making small talk with people and feeling comfortable in just about anybody's company.' All those hours in the gym have been worth it, then, Mark. EXCL The Chase's Mark Labbett reveals he was forced to quit date after shock health scare DONNA: MY DATE WAS ONE BIG CON COMIC Donna Preston reveals her love life hasn't been a barrel of laughs – she once unwittingly dated a murderer. The Celebrity Big Brother housemate went on a date with a man she had met online and thought it was going well, until he ghosted her. 7 Donna Preston reveals her love life hasn't been a barrel of laughs – she once unwittingly dated a murderer Credit: Channel4 She later discovered why – he had been jailed. Donna said: 'My dating experience has been quite problematic. I went on a date with a murderer. That was the first time I experienced dating apps. I was like, 'Oh, great, I've got a match, let's go on a date with him tonight'. So I ended up meeting him. 'We had a couple of drinks and I couldn't meet him the week after, and then didn't hear from him again. 'He ended up being in the newspaper. 'I opened it and there was his face. He's in prison, he's a murderer. I got a lucky escape.' Not wrong there. PERHAPS NOT LAST NOEL . . ITV may have halted Noel Edmonds' latest comeback but his Kiwi Adventure series could be revived elsewhere. I revealed last week the former Deal Or No Deal host's three-parter about his life in New Zealand, which aired in June, would not be renewed. 7 Noel Edmonds' latest comeback may have been halted by ITV but his Kiwi Adventure series could be revived elsewhere Credit: Instagram But rival streamers may yet take over the show. A TV insider said: 'ITV may have opted against making more series but there's certainly interest from other streamers. 'They believe Noel's show has plenty more to offer and there's every chance it may be resurrected.' His River Haven estate has also been hit by flooding in recent months, forcing him to close his pub, vineyard and wellness centre. Viewers who watched the series – still streaming on ITVX – saw Noel and wife Liz turn their estate into a popular attraction in their community. Hopefully it's not the last we hear from them. FAIERS PLAY IT'S 15 years since sisters Sam and Billie Faiers found fame on Towie, and both have had multiple spin-off series for ITV2. Now they're back on the channel for Sam & Billie: Sister Act, which begins later this month. 7 Sisters Sam and Billie Faiers found fame on Towie 15 years ago Credit: Getty Sam says: 'We live only an hour away from each other, but having six children between us and being super busy, everything we do, we don't see each other that much. But since we've been filming again, we've become closer as sisters.' Billie teased there are highs and lows in the run, adding: 'We film it all, that's what everyone likes. You don't want to hide things, you can't polish everything, there's the bad stuff and the tears.' KERRY'S FAN OF ACTING KERRY KATONA dreams of becoming an actress – but fears that her wild past has made her unemployable. The former Atomic Kitten singer also believes her OnlyFans side hustle hasn't done her any favours when it comes to impressing casting agents. 7 Kerry Katona dreams of becoming an actress – but fears that her wild past has made her unemployable Credit: Channel4 But there's no chance she's going to pack in her X-rated antics on the saucy platform, as she makes too much cash. Kerry says: 'I'm a fantastic actress. That is something I really enjoy, is acting. 'But unfortunately, my name holds me back in the casting world in England. 'I don't even know if it's the OnlyFans, but I'll never give that up as long as I'm making the money I'm making. 'Why would I? 'I'm selling a fantasy. That's all I'm doing. I'll keep doing that before I'm tripping on me nipples . . . which I already am!' Hollywood doesn't know what it is missing.
