Dortmund make final decision on possible Hummels return

Yahoo14-05-2025
Following Nico Schlotterbeck's long-term injury, reports surfaced that Borussia Dortmund were considering a short-term return for Mats Hummels from AS Roma to provide cover for this summer's Club World Cup.
However, according to Sport Bild, Dortmund have ultimately decided against including the veteran defender in their squad for the tournament.

Since the speculation began in mid-April, Dortmund's defense has stabilized, while Hummels himself is lacking match fitness and hasn't featured for Roma in over a month.
The 36-year-old, who is set to retire at the end of the season, is still expected to don the black and yellow one last time, although not in a competitive game, with WAZ reporting that a testimonial match is being planned in his honor.
There also remains the possibility of Hummels returning to the club in a different role after his retirement.

Chelsea players to donate portion of Club World Cup winnings to family of Diogo Jota and André Silva

Chelsea players have decided to donate a portion of their Club World Cup bonuses to the family of Diogo Jota and André Silva, according to The Athletic. Jota and Silva were killed in a July car crash in Spain. [Join or create a Yahoo Fantasy Football league for the 2025 NFL season] The decision, made jointly between the players and the club, will see a $15.5 million fund distributed equally among the players with an equal payment made to Jota's family. According to The Athletic, "the overall value of each portion tallies more than $500k before it's subjected to currency conversion costs from US dollars into UK pound sterling, alongside relevant employer costs, taxes and social security costs." Pedro Neto, who was teammates with Jota with Portugal and Wolverhampton Wanderers, signed with Chelsea in 2024. Chelsea won the expanded FIFA tournament last month after beating Paris Saint-Germain in the final at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. The team's run in the event brought in an estimated $114.6 million to the club. Tributes to continue for Jota, Silva The soccer world began paying tribute to the brothers following their tragic deaths in early July. Moments of silence were held at matches, including the Women's EUROs and Club World Cup. Other tributes were seen at Oasis' first reunion concert in Wales and by players around the world performing Jota's video game celebration. Ahead of Friday's Premier League opener against Bournemouth, Liverpool have announced they will dedicate the cover of its match day program to Jota, who played 123 times for the club, and Silva. All players across the league will wear black arms bands this weekend and will take part in a moment of silence. Jota will also be immortalized with a statue at Anfield, Liverpool's home ground, and players will wear a "Forever 20" emblem on their jerseys this season in reference to his number. The No. 20 has also been permanently retired by the club, the first time that honor has been bestowed on a former player in club history. Jota's death led to a poignant moment of silence at the Club World Cup match between Fluminense and Al-Hilal last week, as Al-Hilal defenders Rúben Neves and João Cancelo — two of Jota's Portugal teammates — became emotional. The next day, Neves and Cancelo flew back to Portugal for Jota's funeral, in which Neves served as a pallbearer.

Real Madrid signs Argentine teenager Franco Mastantuono to a six-year deal

MADRID — Real Madrid signed Argentine teenage forward Franco Mastantuono to a six-year deal on Thursday. The former River Plate player, who turned 18 on Thursday, underwent his medical and signed the contract alongside Madrid president Florentino Pérez. 'I promise I'll give everything I have for this shirt,' Mastantuono said. 'It has always been a dream of mine to play for the greatest club in the world.' Madrid had already reached a deal for his signing but had to wait until he turned 18. The club reportedly paid 45 million euros ($52.5 million). Mastantuono was presented with a replica model of Santiago Bernabeu Stadium, a watch and a jersey with his name and number 30. This offseason, Madrid also signed young Spain central defender Dean Huijsen and England right back Trent Alexander-Arnold . Madrid is in its first season under coach Xabi Alonso , who replaced Carlo Ancelotti. It is coming off a disappointing season by its high standards, losing the Spanish league title to Barcelona and failing to reach the final in the Club World Cup and the Champions League. It also lost all four clasicos against its Catalan rival. It all led to a coaching change: Ancelotti took over Brazil and former player Alonso arrived as widely expected. Madrid's first La Liga match is at home against Osasuna on Tuesday. ___ AP soccer:

Chelsea vs Crystal Palace: Prediction, kick-off time, TV, live stream, team news, h2h results, odds

Chelsea open the new Premier League campaign with a London derby, hosting Crystal Palace at Stamford Bridge. It has been a hectic summer for both clubs. Chelsea were crowned world champions in mid-July after goals from Cole Palmer and Joao Pedro sunk Paris Saint-Germain in the Club World Cup final. Following that, they took just three weeks off before returning for pre-season at Cobham, winning two friendlies in quick succession against AC Milan and Bayer Leverkusen. A range of new signings could make their competitive debuts on Sunday. Jamie Gittens, Estevao, and Jorrel Hato are all yet to contest an official match for the Blues, while Liam Delap and Pedro both appeared at the Club World Cup. For Crystal Palace, the high of winning the FA Cup and qualifying for the Europa League was promptly followed by demotion to the Conference League for a violation of multi-club ownership rules, which was held up on appeal. They launched their 2025-26 season with silverware, though, beating Liverpool on penalties to claim the Community Shield. Off-pitch, transfer dealings have been limited. Eberechi Eze and Marc Guehi have both been at the centre of swirling speculation but are set to remain in south London for Palace's season opener. There have been just two arrivals in the form of former PSV goalkeeper Walter Benitez and Ajax full-back Borna Sosa. Date, kick-off time and venue Chelsea vs Crystal Palace is scheduled for a 2pm BST kick-off on Sunday, August 17, 2025. The match will take place at Stamford Bridge. Where to watch Chelsea vs Crystal Palace TV channel: In the UK, the game will be televised live on Sky Sports Premier League and Sky Sports Main Event, with coverage starting at 1pm ahead of a 2pm kick-off. Live stream: Sky Sports subscribers can also catch the contest live online via the Sky Go app and website. Live blog: You can follow all the action on matchday via Standard Sport's live blog, with expert analysis from Dom Smith at Stamford Bridge. Chelsea vs Crystal Palace team news Chelsea have been boosted ahead of this match by a pair of returnees, with Trevoh Chalobah and Wesley Fofana both available for selection. Chalobah limped off with an ankle injury in last week's friendly against AC Milan, which Enzo Maresca has downplayed as a non-issue, while Fofana has finally returned from a long-term lay-off. 'He will be available for Palace. We are very happy because he is an important player,' said the Italian. Romeo Lavia remains absent with an issue picked up over the summer, while Levi Colwill is expected to miss most of the season after rupturing his ACL. Chelsea's eight summer signings will all hope to play their first Premier League minutes in the match. The Brazilian phenom Estevao has made a strong case for himself to start off the right, while Pedro is expected to lead the line in spite of Delap's brace last time out. As for the Eagles, Oliver Glasner is facing a minor injury crisis. Chadi Riad is still recovering from an ACL injury, while Cheick Doucoure is thought to be nearing a return from his own knee issue. Striker Eddie Nketiah will miss out with the same thigh issue which saw him ruled out for much of pre-season, and is not expected to return until early September. Daichi Kamada is carrying a knee injury, expected to keep him out through the end of the month. Matheus Franca will face a late fitness test. As with their opponents, the new signings will hope to debut. Sosa could slot in at full-back, though Benitez will likely be left on the bench in favour of Dean Henderson. Glasner may, however, be inspired to rotate ahead of a midweek Conference League play-off. Chelsea vs Crystal Palace prediction Chelsea are something of an unknown quantity this season. Nobody knows yet exactly how they will be affected by the Club World Cup and shortened summer holiday. For now, though, they seem totally unfazed. The Blues flew through their two pre-season outings, hitting six goals. New signings have, for the most part, hit the ground running, and Palmer seems back to his best. Across the pitch, though, Palace produced a pragmatic performance to cut down the reigning champions Liverpool in the Community Shield. But whether they can handle Maresca's free-flowing Blues remains to be seen. Chelsea to win, 2-1 Head to head (h2h) history and results Jean-Philippe Mateta scored a late equaliser to cancel out Palmer's first-half opener when these sides last met in January.
