Italy to fund study for revitalization of ancient Roman coastal city of Quseir
Italy's Ambassador to Egypt, Michele Quaroni, has reaffirmed his country's commitment to collaborating with Egypt's Ministry of Local Development on a range of sustainable development and heritage preservation projects across the country. The focus will be on funding a study for the development of Quseir, an ancient Roman coastal city, in partnership with the Red Sea Governorate.
The study, which will be carried out in collaboration with Takween Integrated Community Development, follows the success of the 'Investing in Sustainable Tourism in Esna' project in Luxor Governorate, which was recognized by the World Tourism Organization for its impact.
This announcement was made during a meeting between Ambassador Quaroni and Minister of Local Development, Manal Awad, where they discussed potential areas of cooperation at the ministry level and across Egypt's governorates. Minister Awad welcomed Italy's support, emphasizing the importance of enhancing local economic development by leveraging the competitive advantages of Egypt's cities. She noted that Quseir could serve as a model for successful and integrated development, similar to the achievements in Esna.
In addition to the Quseir project, Minister Awad outlined several areas for future collaboration, including efforts to combat climate change, expand the use of renewable energy in public transportation in Greater Cairo, and convert bus stations to solar energy while transitioning public buses to electric power.
Ambassador Quaroni expressed Italy's readiness to support these initiatives, particularly in the field of renewable energy, and pledged to prepare and present the proposed study to relevant Italian agencies for further action.
Both sides agreed to stay in contact to implement the proposals discussed, working together with the Ministry of Local Development, the Italian Embassy, and the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation to bring these projects to fruition.

Italy's Mt. Etna erupts, sending huge plume of ash and rock into air
CNN — A massive eruption occurred at Mt. Etna on the Italian island of Sicily, producing a plume of high temperature gases, ash and rock 'several kilometers high,' authorities said on Monday. The eruption, which began overnight, produced explosions heard as far away as Taormina and Catania, which are about 50 kilometers and 40 kilometers (31 miles and 25 miles) away, respectively, according to several witnesses who posted footage on social media. The National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology Observatory said that the preliminary observations show a 'partial collapse' of the northern flank of the volcano's southeast crater, which has produced spectacular lava flows during recent eruptions in the last few months. The Sicilian Civil Protection agency issued a Volcanic Observatory Notice for Aviation (VONA), which means all flight travel must avoid the area. The airports in Catania and Palermo remain open as, currently, the wind is not blowing ash in the direction of the airport. However, some flights from Catania have been diverted to Palermo, according to Flight Radar Data. Around 1 p.m. local time (7 a.m. ET), the volcano started spewing hot lava, which is more in line with previous eruptions, an observatory spokesman said. The observatory defined the volcanic activity as a pyroclastic eruption, resulting in a 'significant increase in volcanic tremor and the formation of an eruptive column containing a lethal mixture of high-temperature gases, lava grains, volcanic ash, and rock fragments of various sizes that rapidly descends down the slopes of the volcano.'

6,000 Projects Completed in Upper Egypt With EGP 32 Billion Investment
The Upper Egypt Local Development Programme has improved infrastructure and services for over 8 million residents. May 30, 2025 The Ministry of Local Development has announced the completion of more than 6,000 development projects in Upper Egypt, with total investments exceeding EGP 32 billion. These initiatives, part of the Upper Egypt Local Development Programme launched in 2018, have enhanced infrastructure and public services for approximately 8.2 million citizens in the governorates of Sohag, Qena, Minya, and Assiut. The projects have focused on key sectors such as roads, sanitation, and electricity. Notably, 40% of the investments have been allocated to economic development and institutional capacity-building at local and technological levels. The programme has also advanced Egypt's decentralisation agenda and increased private sector participation, benefiting over 72,000 companies. Surveys indicate that around 85% of business owners reported satisfaction with the support provided, reflecting positively on the government's broader 2024–2027 national reform plan. The World Bank reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Egypt's efforts to enhance the business climate, digitise local services, and replicate successful models, particularly the economic cluster approach, in other governorates. Twelve economic clusters have already been implemented, with most nearing completion and full rollout anticipated by October 2025.
