
Atomfall review – everybody's gone to the reactor
'What if the Chornobyl disaster happened in the UK?' is the question Atomfall asks. The answer, according to developer Rebellion, is that it would be considerably more picturesque and feature loads of pasties. Aping the nuclear catastrophe fiction of series such as Fallout and Stalker, Atomfall offers a mildly diverting scientific whodunit. But it struggles to muster the same clear identity of the games that inspired it.
Using the 1957 Windscale fire as its launchpad, Atomfall thrusts you into a postwar Britain where that accident was dramatically worse, prompting the government to send in the army before walling off a large portion of the Lake District, sealing everybody inside. Your character, an archetypal video game amnesiac, awakes inside the exclusion zone several years later. To escape, they must unravel the mystery behind what caused the disaster, who is responsible and how to fix it.
This mystery, and how it unfolds, are by far the most interesting parts of Atomfall. The story reframes conventional quests as 'leads', where points of interest are revealed by collecting documents such as letters and military reports, and speaking to the surviving locals in the zone. At the heart of the enigma is a vast underground research facility, which you must reactivate by unlocking its entrances and locating atomic batteries to power its various sectors, ultimately unlocking the heart of Windscale and the dark secret kept inside.
It's a tale that offers plenty of intrigue. The characters that assist you on your journey, including soldiers, scientists and a publican, have their own motivations for doing so, which you'll only uncover by cross-referencing them with other players in Atomfall's unspoken game of zones. These will often relate to diversions you'll find along the way, such as infiltrating a castle occupied by Wicker Man-style druids to retrieve a special medicine and solving a quintessentially British murder in a church.
Unpicking these threads is fun, and the tale benefits from a tighter focus and better pacing than most open-world adventures. Unfortunately, the accompanying game mechanics feel as if they turn up more from obligation than enthusiasm. Combat lets you choose between guns that are serviceable but unremarkable, and melee fighting that will make you appreciate every rusty firearm you collect. There is a rudimentary crafting system you'll mostly use to make bandages and the occasional molotov cocktail. A stealth system exists in theory, but perhaps fittingly I never saw it function in any meaningful fashion. Enemies can spot you from half the map away and seem telepathically connected to nearby allies, which makes sneaking around awkward and unrewarding.
It probably doesn't help that it's always a bright sunny day in Atomfall's exclusion zone, which would be unusual for any part of the UK, let alone the Lake District. On the whole, it could make better use of its Cumbrian setting. Although Atomfall's four maps are lavish and fun to explore, including craggy valleys filled with shells of dry-stone buildings, and the most meticulously recreated English village since Everybody's Gone to the Rapture, the world is not especially atmospheric.
Moreover, the enemy factions, druids and crazed marauders clad in cricket gear, feel like vague attempts to anglicise the kooky gangs of Fallout. Where are the feral ramblers, the roving bands of literati fighting over whether Wordsworth or Coleridge was the better poet? Why are pasties so abundant, while Kendal mint cake and Grasmere gingerbread are absent? This may seem flippant, but given we have recently seen such a brilliant lampoon of northern life in Thank Goodness You're Here!, Atomfall's own depiction of the north, and indeed Britain in general, feels superficial and haphazard, a jumbled assemblage of cultural touchstones.
To use another example, one of Atomfall's key inspirations is Stalker, a series whose strength lies in how it is so specifically, uncompromisingly Ukrainian. Stalker and its sequels are completely unafraid to be weird, bold, challenging and bleak, to wholly envelop the player in its nation's radioactive trauma. The UK simply doesn't share that trauma in the same way, so Rebellion's 'what if' scenario can only ever be a shadow of Chornobyl.

Now, in their first joint interview with Variety since the falling out rumours reached their pinnacle, they have cleared the record once and for all. Walton, who has spent many of the past weeks working intensive hours on the Fallout set, shared: 'There is no feud. I adore, I love this woman madly, and she is so important to me.' Then looking at Aimee, added: 'This is Goldie Hawn. This is Meg Ryan. She can do anything, and she will. You watch what the next 20 years of her experience will be. I'll be on an island, I think Greece. But she's special. There is no feud. 'She is love and I know that I am that to her. We care about each other very deeply.' And explained that he would 'never' speak for both of them, hence he didn't discuss the issue with The Times. Specifically, Walton claimed that The Times interviewer had tried to compare his and Aimee's teeth and asked if they had bonded over them on set, which left him 'disgusted and flabbergasted'. Aimee echoed the shock, saying: 'How horrible!' The 31-year-old star then said Instagram was 'irrelevant' and neither of them 'gave a s***e', encouraging people to discuss the show's storyline and characters instead. 'Eventually I just started to sit back and watch these people making something out of absolutely nothing,' Aimee added while Walton called himself a 'grown-a** man'. Then, he explained that he has always found the end of intense projects of this nature difficult (especially considering his personal ties to this one) and had let Aimee know he was 'processing saying goodbye'. By the end of their chat, Walton had followed Aimee on Instagram once more. He concluded by calling the whole situation 'ridiculous'. 'It's just a part of me just saying goodbye to this character so that now Aimee and I will be friends for f**king ever,' he said. As for what's next for Goggins, in a recent interview with Metro, he discussed his ethos with allowing himself to embrace 'the unknown'. How Tom Cruise's new blockbuster created a Tube station in central London
The blockbuster of 2025 so far, Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning is bookended by two scenes in the heart of London. The movie opens with Tom Cruise's Ethan Hunt and his team, including tech wiz Benji (Simon Pegg) and computer specialist Luther (Ving Rhames), emerging from Trafalgar Square tube station and into a throng of police and protestors all on the edge of a riot with armoured trucks standing by. Evil A.I. The Entity has taken control and martial law has been imposed on society. The second scene we won't spoil, except to say that it has the IMF crew back in the same bustling corner of Trafalgar Square and exiting the same Zone 1 station. Amid this dystopian set-up, eagle-eyed viewers will have spotted one major anomaly in the two scenes: Trafalgar Square tube station, of course, does not exist. 'Charing Cross Station has an entrance in Trafalgar Square but to get Tom and all those extras in – and to get The National Gallery in the background – this new tube station was born,' explains the film's supervising location manager Niall O'Shea. 'All the Mission: Impossible movies are love letters to the cities they're in – Fallout is Paris, Dead Reckoning is Rome and Paris – so Trafalgar Square picked itself. It's where a big protest would happen.' Creating the fictional tube station and filming in Trafalgar Square required close collaboration with TFL (Transport For London) – not least in creating the iconic roundel sign for the fictional station. 'The roundels are copyrighted and they kindly gave us the digital model [to work with] and permission to go ahead,' says O'Shea. 'The sign is like a red bus or a postbox, it tells the audience we're in London.' In real life, the movie's station exit is the actually entrance to the Heritage Wardens' office. 'The wardens look after Trafalgar Square,' says O'Shea. 'They stop people putting Fairy Liquid in the fountains, keep it clean and manage it as an event space.' Out went the wardens, in came Cruise, Pegg, director Christopher McQuarrie, a small army of cast, crew and extras and 'a big travelling circus' of trucks, drones and lighting rigs in April 2025. 'We had the square closed for 24 hours on a Sunday,' remembers O'Shea. 'The martial law element was dressed at 11am, the shoot crew turned up at 2pm, we filmed the daytime stuff until about 7pm, redressed it until 10-11pm, then shot til dawn. We gave it back to Londoners first thing on Monday morning.' So where are the Trafalgar Square station signs now? 'I know there were a few people who thought it'd make a great piece of film memorabilia,' says O'Shea, 'but no one will own up to having it'.

'Irreplaceable' gig venue fears noise complaints from new flats
A music venue which hosts heavy metal gigs and punk bands has said it feared becoming embroiled in a noise row with residents of a new city centre tower block. The owners of Rebellion on Whitworth Street West in Manchester said they "cannot afford to fight" a legal battle if there were complaints. The application, from property firm Glenbrook, to build a £118m 44-storey development next to the bar has been approved by Manchester City local authority said it was aware of "sensitivities relating to the proximity of Rebellion to this development, and the potential noise nuisance which could be created in the future" and work was ongoing to ensure a solution. The venue's co-owner Alex Kostyakov said an appropriate acoustic assessment had not been completed and he had not been consulted by developers. "They did [the assessment] on a Friday and Saturday night and didn't event mention that we're an all-week venue in the planning submission," he said."We have heavy metal gigs on Monday nights, people moving in aren't going to be expecting that," the 31-year-old from Swinton said."If you've got a Sunday off and you're trying to relax in your flat and we've got a loud punk bank playing it's not going to work."It's about quality of life for the resident not just us." Manchester City Council said a clause in the planning agreement would ensure that work would only begin when it was "satisfied that it can take place without any noise nuisance being detected in future properties".However, Mr Kostyakov, who has co-owned the venue since 2021, said there was no way to know if there would be noise issues until residents had moved in. "The worry is that residents move in and the council turns round and says we have to pay for £50,000 worth of soundproofing," he said."Or if they say we have to be ending gigs at 10, for example, we will lose a big chunk of our income."That would basically be the end of us, we'd have to shut." 'Well-loved locally' He said he was concerned the venue could end up in the same situation as Northern Quarter venue Night and Day Cafe, which was subject to a three-year legal battle with the council over noise complaints in 2021."Our pockets are nowhere near as deep as Night and Day," he said. "We both have other jobs because running a music venue isn't enough."Mr Kostyakov is calling for an amendment to the planning permission requiring the developer to take responsibility for "any remediation and acoustic works" in future. The BBC has contacted Glenbrook for a Whitworth Street West development had been approved last month but the application had to be reassessed after the Music Venue True (MVT) submitted an objection on the basis of its proximity to MVT said: "Rebellion is not only well-loved locally and nationally, it is an irreplaceable part of Manchester's live music infrastructure."It said the risk was "not hypothetical" as there were "obvious correlations between noise complaints and venues closing"."Responsible planning should create places where people want to live because of the cultural life on their doorstep, not in spite of it," it added.
