Thane trader duped of Rs 4.11 crore in elaborate online forex scam

Representative Image THANE: A 42-year-old garment trader from Manpada lost a staggering ₹4.11 crore to an organised online scam that promised massive returns through forex and options trading. According to the Cyber Crime Police, the elaborate racket played out over nearly four months. It began on March 18, 2025, when the trader received unsolicited WhatsApp messages from unknown individuals identifying themselves as 'Tracy Clark, Paul J. Detudor, and Cameron Shan.' Using multiple Indian and international mobile numbers, the suspects claimed they were representatives of a reputed global investment firm engaged in foreign exchange market trades. The conmen shared a link to what appeared to be a sophisticated online trading platform. 'Trusting their claims, the trader began investing in March and continued making payments through multiple bank transfers until July, eventually parting with ₹4.11 crore. From June 6 to July 10, the suspects allegedly stepped up their pressure, urging him to invest more to 'unlock' higher profit margins,' said a police officer quoting the complaint. The scam began to unravel when the trader attempted to withdraw his earnings. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like TV providers are furious: this gadget gives you access to all channels Techno Mag Learn More Undo The platform blocked his withdrawal requests, and his supposed profits stopped updating. When repeated demands for a refund were met with silence and the numbers used by the suspects went inactive, the trader realised he was defrauded. He approached the Cyber Crime Police Station, where an FIR was registered under BNS act sections, along with relevant provisions of the Information Technology Act. Investigators are now working to trace the suspects' digital trail, including IP addresses, hosting servers of the fake platform, and the flow of funds, which are suspected to have been routed through multiple accounts and cryptocurrency wallets. Police have urged citizens to be extremely cautious about online investment schemes, especially those promoted via unsolicited messages or unknown international numbers. 'If an investment offer sounds too good to be true, it usually is,' an officer said. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI).
