Edmonton Oilers in trade talks for Boston Bruins 1st round winger? Hmm
This in from hockey writer and analyst Dominic Tiano of Dom.Hockey.com, a rumour that the Boston Bruins and Edmonton may be cooking up a deal involving Boston moving former first round draft pick winger Fabian Lysell to the Oilers.
Article content
Said Court Lalonde of the Bruins Diehards podcast: 'When the Boston Bruins used their first round pick in the 2021 NHL draft to select Fabian Lysel, fans saw a glimpse of the type of player the franchise rarely has a chance to draft. A pure offensive talent with blazing speed, elite hands, and top six potential. Fast forward to today and instead of talking about him becoming a fixture in the Bruins lineup, the conversation has shifted. Rumors are swirling the Bruins may be dangling Lysel in a trade with the Edmonton Oilers … Dominic Tiano suggested in my Discord (digital chat) that the Bruins and the Oilers have been in conversations.'

1. Tiano has the reputation in Boston of being a good source of news on Bruins prospects. I can't speak conclusively to Tiano's credibility, but he's well regarded in Boston and this rumour makes sense from the Boston perspective, though maybe not so much from the Edmonton perspective.

2. It makes sense that the Bruins would be thinking of trading off Lysell, even as he was their first round pick in 2011, 21st overall. Boston grabbed him one pick before the Oilers took Xavier Bourgault, who was traded away by the Oilers last summer after two unimpressive years in the AHL. Lysell has been a much more successful AHLer than Bourgault. He's known for his speed and skill passing. But he's failed to make the Bruins after three AHL years and his point production in the AHL trended down sharply last season. He's in the final year of his Entry Level Contract.

3. This past March, Boston coach Joe Sacco said of him: 'The reports from Providence are all positive as far as his game down there. Not just offensively but his 200-foot game, his play away from the puck, his ability to stay on pucks, the things that we need to see from some of the young players. It's good that he's getting an opportunity. At some point we'll see him in the line-up here…'

4. It's not a good signal if a prospect takes a step back as a player in the AHL. This doesn't mean Lysell can't become a competent NHL, or even a Top 6 option for some team. But those Top 6 possibilities aren't screaming out from his statistical drop this past year. He's also a smaller forward and the Oilers are already well stocked with that kind of player in newcomers Ike Howard, Matt Savoie and veteran Andrew Mangiapane.
Article content
5. The Bruins Diehards postcast mentioned Savoie and winger Vasily Podkolzin as possibilities in a Lysell trade, but it's hard to imagine either player makes sense from an Oilers perspective. Savoie is a year younger than Lysell, a higher draft pick, and had a better year in his first AHL season than Lysell did in his thrid AHL season. The one year they played in the same league, 2021-22 in the Western Hockey League, the younger Savoie had 90 points in 65 games, Lysell 62 points in 53 games. Savoie has two more years of being waiver ineligible, and two more years on his lower ELC salary, Lysell just one year.

This physical winger has a chance to become a valuable cog in the Edmonton Oilers Bottom-6
Article content The Top 20 countdown of our 2025 Cult of Hockey Prospect Series continues. Again, these are the twenty young men in the system today closest to making an impact with the big club. Players only fall off the list once they: Article content -Make the NHL -Get dealt to a different organization -Age out, or… -Drop off the map. Article content Lets proceed… Article content (Voters: David Staples, Kurt Leavins, Jim Matheson, Ira Cooper). Article content Article content Physical wingers with some skill and on their ELC's are like found gold in the NHL. Will David Lewandowski be that for the Oilers? Article content Article content Selected in this past June's draft in Round Four, #117 overall, this left-shot winger out of Schwatzinger, Germany stands 6'1 and weighs in at 177 LB. Article content If you look at this prospect through the lens of well-known and respected draft projections, this was a shrewd pick-up by Edmonton. Elite Prospects had him ranked #77, Daily faceoff #86, Flo Hockey #69 and his consolidated ranking rang in at #94. From the outside in, that looks like a win. Article content The eighteen-year-old will turn 19 in February. In his first season in the Western Hockey League, Lewandowski was productive, going 15-24-39 in 52 GP adding 21 PIM. He also had a goal and an assist in four playoff games. In addition, he had a goal and an assist in four games at the Hlinka Gretzky Cup. Article content Article content Prior to that, Lewandowski also managed to play seven games with Dusseldorf EG in the Deutsche Eishockey Liga (DEL), which is Germany's top professional league as a seventeen-year-old. He also has international experience. But that small sample playing against men as a teenager stands out more to me. Article content Elite Prospects: Article content -Lewandowski is a dominant puck protector who throws reverse hits and bulldozes contact. His shooting has been a constant threat across his career. He rips pucks off his outside leg and possesses a powerful catch-and-release shot that he leverages with higher-end precision. Even more impressive, his physical skills – puck protection, especially – are the most translatable aspects of his game. Article content -A smart, solid, all-around forward with a strong shot and sub-par skating, though he has a straightforward path to the NHL. A solid all-around player'.

No team with such a top-heavy roster as Edmonton Oilers has won Stanley Cup in salary cap era
Article content Article content Article content Do the Oilers have such talent at that top end and throughout the roster that they can defy this historic fact? Article content They just might. Draisaitl, McDavid and Bouchard are proven playoff performers and among the very best at their respective positions, if not the best. The Oilers also have players on value contracts, including their highly-paid top trio, who are all worth more than they're getting paid this coming year, at least according to the calculations of stats expert Dom Luszczyszyn. Article content Edmonton is an older team now with players who are likely to get banged up and injured as the season progresses. It will be no surprise at all if they have one or two significant injuries by the time of the trade deadline, which will enable the Oilers to legally fill in for those injured players with new acquisitions for the remainder of the regular season. Those new players will also be available during the playoffs. Article content Article content Whether or not Edmonton's injured players will be ready is an unknown. But it could well be that due to the timing of injuries and recovery that the Oilers (as well as other contending teams) will be able to ice a roster with a collective cap hit of more than $100 million in the playoffs. This will greatly assist any such team in winning the Cup and will work to negate the high amount any of them pay to their own Core Four. Article content But Edmonton could also be healthy this year. If that's the case, they'll need young and inexpensive players to step up with massive contributions during the regular season and playoffs. Candidates for those kind of performance include rookies Matt Savoie, Noah Philp and Ike Howard and young veterans like Stuart Skinner, Ty Emberson and Vasily Podkolzin. Article content Edmonton will also need its vets to come through, of course, in particular Nurse, who played his best hockey during the 2024-25 regular season but saw his game collapse, yet again, in the playoffs. Article content Article content A huge key for the Oilers is for Nurse to bring the strong two-way play he regularly executes in the regular season to the playoff stage. He's got to step up in the playoffs, not fade away until he's a major liability to the team, as he's been all too often in recent playoff seasons. Article content Can Nurse do that? I see no reason why not. The talent and the will are there, it's just a matter of him staying healthy and figuring out the right mindset, psychology and tactics for playoff success. My bet is we'll see the best of Darnell Nurse in the 2026 playoffs. That will be huge for the Oilers. Article content Of course, it's a treacherous mountain for any team to climb to win the Stanley Cup. With so many excellent teams and such parity in the NHL, any one of ten teams could easily win the Cup. There are no sure things.

New-look UCLA aims for turnaround with transfer quarterback Nico Iamaleava
LOS ANGELES (AP) — DeShaun Foster got busy overhauling most of his coaching staff after his first season at UCLA. He upgraded the roster, making a splash in the transfer portal by landing quarterback Nico Iamaleava. Iamaleava left Tennessee before the spring game to return home to Los Angeles, where he'll try to take the Bruins to heights they haven't been in years. UCLA was 5-7 overall and 3-6 in its debut season in the Big Ten Conference under Foster. The Bruins' last double-digit win season was in 2014 and they've made just three bowl appearances since 2017, losing twice. Iamaleava is among 55 new players in Westwood, along with eight new assistants. He didn't participate in spring camp, so how quickly the Bruins come together will be something to watch. 'I love how humble he is,' Foster said. 'He's open to learning anything and he hasn't big-timed anybody in our program. He's always in there acting like one of the regular guys, like he's been here the whole time.' Nico and Tino Nico Sunseri replaces offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy, who was fired after one season. Sunseri helped Indiana average 41.3 points — second-best in the nation — and reach the College Football Playoff last year. Sunseri, 36, played quarterback at Pitt and went on to the Canadian Football League before starting his coaching career with stops including Florida State and Alabama. 'I just love Tino's energy,' Foster said. 'He's played quarterback at a high level and he just holds them accountable.' Sunseri and Iamaleava hit it off early on. 'The thing about Nico is he's a self-driven person. He has a certain standard of how he wants to operate each day,' Sunseri said. 'There's not one day that he hasn't come in here that he's not focused on being able to become the best player he can be for UCLA.' Sunseri is working with a retooled offensive line that includes Kentucky transfer Courtland Ford and Florida State transfer Julian Armella. Iamaleava's younger brother, Madden, is a quarterback, too. He originally committed to the Bruins and then bailed on signing day to join Arkansas. He spent half the spring with the Razorbacks before also coming home. Defense Over half the projected starting lineup on defense is made up of transfers, including linebackers Isaiah Chisom from Oregon State and Ben Perry from Louisville. The Bruins ranked 39th in the country with 340.8 yards per game allowed last season. The lone returning starter is defensive tackle Siale Taupaki, who made seven starts. 'With this much turnover, we have to find ways to get this team to jell,' Foster said. 'You're going to see growth in my team.' The schedule The Bruins open with former Pac-12 Conference rival Utah on Aug. 30 at the Rose Bowl, followed by a trip to UNLV in Allegiant Stadium and a home game against New Mexico on Sept. 13. The schedule gets tough with a visit by national title contender No. 2 Penn State on Oct. 4 and road games at No. 20 Indiana on Oct. 25 and No. 3 Ohio State on Nov. 15. The Bruins close the regular season with a visit to crosstown rival USC on Nov. 29. ___ Get poll alerts and updates on the AP Top 25 throughout the season. Sign up here. AP college football: and
