JACK DELLA MADALLENA has battled back from a potentially career-ending infection to the brink of becoming the new king of the UFC's welterweight division.
The slick southpaw gets his shot at glory early on Sunday morning in the main event of UFC 315 in Montreal, where he'll bid to end Belal Muhammad's reign as 170lbs champion.

His shot at UFC gold comes 14 MONTHS after he broke his left arm in his career-best win over former title challenger Gilbert Burns, after which he'd have surgery.
Ten days after going under the knife, he was forced to have a SECOND surgery as an infection caused the wound to split.
Della Maddalenna - who will bid to become only the third Australian to win a title in MMA's top promotion - would spend NINE DAYS in the hospital on a mixture of IV and oral antibiotics before he was allowed home.
But he wasn't out of the woods just yet, with multiple abscesses popping up in the wound over the next five weeks.
In an exclusive interview with SunSport, he said of the ordeal: "It got pretty bad, you know.
"The infection, the broken arm and [then I] went back and I had surgery.
"And then ten days later, the whole wound, it's a pretty big scar, the whole thing just started splitting.
"And it was sort of, like, oozing fluid and got pretty nasty.

"And then I went back to the surgeon and he just looked at it straight away and said, 'Oh, yeah, this looks like an infection.' It got nasty.
"The infection somehow got all the way to the bone. [But] it was just one of those things.
UFC star Belal Muhammad thought he was blind after Leon Edwards eye poke
"I thought it was just unlucky, you know. It's one of those risks you take with surgeries.
"And I was unlucky enough to bear the full brunt of that sort of situation. But then, it was just trying to fight the infection.
"It was hard to get rid of the infection.
"It was a lot of antibiotics and a few surgeries to get rid of the infected bone, but we got through it in the end."
The recovery process was an emotional rollercoaster for JDM, who admitted: "It was hard. I had ups and downs.
"Coming off such a big win and then having the injury, which was no big deal, like I've had injuries before.
"But then getting the news that it was infected, I was like, 'Wow, that's interesting.' So that was another down.
"And then just not being able to knock the infection, it was pretty devastating. Especially as I was eager to get back in there.
"I had plans of competing a lot last year, but I've just rolled with it. I just had to stay strong, you know."
Della Maddalena's family helped him get through the most testing time of his career.
"I was lucky enough that I had some distractions," he said. "I had my daughter, my second child was born, so that was a bit of a distraction here.
It was sort of like oozing fluid and got pretty nasty."

"But I just stayed calm and I thought, 'If it's meant to be, it will be, and I'll be back in there.' I'm glad everything did work out."
Palestinian-born American Muhammad will look to make the second defence of the belt he wrestled from Leon Edwards' clutches in Manchester last July.
And JDM, unlike many others, is refusing to underestimate the size of the job he'll have on his hands in the Montreal melee.
"It was a tough performance," Della Maddalena said of Muhammad's title win. "Belal is very good, he doesn't get the props he deserves.
"He's a good fighter and he comes in always with a good game plan. He's a good and well-rounded fighter.
"It was a tough fight. I think Belal just went in there and I think he had the right game plan to stifle Leon's advantages.
"It wasn't his [Edwards'] best performance, of course. He's had a lot of good performances.
"But, I guess anyone can win on any given night. And I think that night was definitely Belal's night."
Catch UFC 315: MUHAMMAD vs. DELLA MADDALENA at 3AM this Sunday, May 11th, on TNT Sports 1.

Ex-Liverpool chief outlines key detail as second Florian Wirtz bid rejected
Florian Wirtz is at the top of Liverpool's list of transfer targets but their first two bids for the German star have fallen short of Bayer Leverkusen's valuation Former Liverpool CEO Peter Moore has suggested the Reds will be looking to offload players to raise money before upping their bid for Florian Wirtz. Bayer Leverkusen have knocked back two bids for Germany star Wirtz, the second of which could have seen Liverpool pay north of £100million including add-ons. Wirtz has emerged as a major target as Arne Slot looks to add further quality to his Premier League winning squad. The Reds look to have fought off the challenge of Bayern Munich to install themselves as frontrunners, but they're still some way from Leverkusen's valuation of their star man. Moore, who was CEO between 2017 and 2020, worked with FSG when the owners sold Philippe Coutinho for a nine-figure sum in the same window the club completed a club record deal for Virgil van Dijk. "I think three or four key signings will be critical," he told talkSPORT. "There are going to be some hard decisions on players who are going to have to leave, and if Wirtz is real - I know my owners pretty well - then somebody is going to have to go to a) get the money [back] and b) make room in the payroll salary for that." The Reds have already brought in around £8.4million after allowing Trent Alexander-Arnold to join Real Madrid a few weeks early, but there could be more work to do. Slot's team have already added around £60m of new talent, with Giorgi Mamardashvili and Jeremie Frimpong joining this summer. When it comes to raising funds, though, there are a few contenders to be offloaded. Chief among that number is Caoimhin Kelleher, whose time looks to be up following Mamardashvili's arrival. The Irish international is a target for Brentford, and appears likely to net his club £18m. Darwin Nunez is another who could fetch a significant fee, with interest from clubs in Saudi Arabia, while Barcelona and Al Nassr have their eye on Luis Diaz. If Liverpool do cash in on Colombia star Diaz, they can expect to turn a profit on a player who cost them north of £40m when he joined from Porto in 2022. Over the weekend, Diaz's partner Gera Ponce prompted speculation over the forward's future with an Instagram post. "To the incredible Liverpool fans. From the first day we arrived, we felt first hand what it means to be a part of this club. "We knew the slogan was 'You'll Never Walk Alone', but to hear them sing it with so much passion, support us every moment and show such unconditional love... confirmed to us that here you never walk alone," she wrote. "This fan doesn't just support, it feels. And what you have made my boyfriend and our entire family feel is something we carry in our souls. "Thank you for so much love, for so much dedication and for making us feel at home. Being a part of this fan is a privilege. There's no doubt: they're the best in the world. This is a real bond, deep and strong, that reaffirms that we'll never walk alone." Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content. Ange Postecoglou sends defiant message as Daniel Levy makes Spurs sack decision
Ange Postecoglou's future as Tottenham manager is yet to be confirmed but talks with another Premier League boss suggest that Daniel Levy has already made his decision Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou insists that he's planning for the future with Spurs, despite claims that Daniel Levy has decided to sack him. Postecoglou, 59, ended Tottenham's 17-year trophy drought earlier this month, as they beat Manchester United 1-0 in the Europa League final. But it came off the back of a disastrous Premier League season. Spurs finished one place above the relegation zone, losing an astonishing 22 league games. It was the most defeats any side has suffered in a 38-game Premier League campaign without being relegated and marked Tottenham's worst top-flight finish in 48 years. But Postecoglou is looking ahead to his third year in charge, even though it's been reported that chairman Levy is ready to wield the axe. Spurs are said to have held talks with Brentford manager Thomas Frank over becoming their new boss. Fulham manager Marco Silva and Bournemouth's Andoni Iraola are also in contention. It comes after Postecoglou told fans at Tottenham's Europa League victory parade that for all the best TV shows: "Season three is better than season two." What did he mean by that? "I didn't want us to just enjoy the moment," he revealed to the Australian Story ahead of a new documentary which was televised on Sunday evening in Australia. "I also wanted us to think about what's next, you know - don't settle for this. "We've got a taste of it now. My players have got a taste for it. The club's got a taste for it. Well, let's make sure we're back here again." Postecoglou has previously labelled media speculation over his future ' weird '. "I'll be honest, I've been finding it really weird talking about my future when we've done something unprecedented," the Aussie-Greek manager told reporters after Spurs lost 4-1 at home to Brighton on the final day. "I've had to answer the questions because no one else at the club is kind of in the position to do so, I guess. But I can't answer that question about me and my future, and part of me is kind of thinking, well, why have I been asked that question? But it is what it is. "And I've got no doubt, though, that this could be a real sort of defining moment for this club because wherever I've been, I've kind of made an impact where I've brought success to a club that hasn't had for a while, and you just have to look at those clubs' trajectory even after I've left, they're still competing for things. "I really think this is a moment in time where this club can really push on and be a real contender for honours on a yearly basis." Maycee Barber: ‘I owe an apology' to UFC after seizure, late dropout
June 2 - In an Instagram post Sunday, Maycee Barber commented on the last-minute cancellation of her UFC Fight Night main event against Erin Blanchfield due to a medical event. Barber did not confirm in her post that she suffered a seizure, but a video showed her being wheeled out of the arena on a stretcher. One of the photos she posted displayed her with medical sensors attached across her body. "Not what I had planned for a Sunday post," Barber wrote. "Thank you to everyone for the prayers & support I owe an apology to @ufc @mickmaynard2 @danawhite @seanshelby & @blanchfield_mma." In an interview with ESPN, Blanchfield said she was waiting for her walkout music Saturday night at UFC Vegas 107 when UFC chief business officer Hunter Campbell told her backstage that Barber was medically unfit to fight. "No one said anything until Hunter came in and told me she was having a seizure and that she wouldn't be able to compete," Blanchfield said. Blanchfield blasted Barber, who had missed weight by half a pound the previous day. "She needs to look at another division," Blanchfield said. "She needs to fix her life. She needs to just fix herself. I think she's a complete mess in every aspect of her entire life." Barber, in her social media post, acknowledged Blanchfield's dig. "PS my life is not messy this is just a bad hand," Barber wrote. "We will get to the bottom of it all and be back." Barber was attempting to compete in a UFC fight for the first time since March 2024, in part due to other health scares. She was hospitalized for nine days in 2024 due to a combination of pneumonia, strep throat and a staph infection. Barber vs. Blanchfield was billed as a fight between top-five flyweight contenders. Blanchfield told ESPN she would not consider accepting another fight with Barber. --Field Level Media
