Proteas coach on Klaasen retirement: We didn't even speak

Earlier this week, in a bombshell announcement, it was announced that Heinrich Klaasen had confirmed his immediate retirement from international cricket, bringing an end to a distinguished seven-year career with the Proteas men.
The warning signs were already there in April when the Proteas men's contracted squad for the 2025/26 season was released, and what stood out more than anything was the absence of keeper-batsman Klaasen.
His omission from the contracted list was acknowledged by CSA in a clear indication that the 33-year-old faced an uncertain future, and perhaps was considering focusing on T20 leagues around the world.
With new Proteas limited-overs Shukri Conrad having asked for his players to prioritise bilateral series over T20 leagues, it was thought that perhaps the two weren't seeing eye to eye.
Whatever the case may be, the sudden retirement is a major blow for the Proteas considering just how Klaasen is to the national cause, with the big-hitting batsman having become one of the most consistent and impactful players in the white ball teams.
Speaking ahead of the World Test Championship final, Conrad suggested that Klaasen's decision was not related to his declaration that players needed to prioritise the national duty over T20 leagues
'Obviously, if you lose a player of the calibre of Heinrich Klaasen, you'd be disappointed,' Conrad told the media at South Africa's warm-up match against Zimbabwe at Arundel. 'But if that's the narrative that you want to espouse, that I'm the common factor, then be my guest.
'I haven't even had a conversation with Heinrich. He turned down the contract long before I was even a thought in the white-ball space. It's really unfortunate that we lose a player of his calibre. He's one of the best in the world, if not the best, among the white ball middle-order batters.'
'I'd be disappointed if it [Klaasen retiring to favour leagues] was, because we didn't have a conversation,' Conrad said. 'I think if guys pre-signed deals prior to me coming on board, I certainly wasn't going to come in there and say, 'Well, you have got to withdraw from whatever you pre-signed.'
'So without us ever having a conversation, I'd be disappointed if that was why he retired. From the little bit I know, I know Heinrich from way back when he was at the academy, kept in the academy sides when I was the coach. I'd be very surprised if he was as short-sighted as that.'

BREAKING: Orlando Pirates release TWO defensive stars!

Orlando Pirates have officially released both Paseka Mako and Thabiso Monyane, the club said in a statement. Mako and Monyane were among the longest serving members of the current Pirates squad. The news of Monyane's departure doesn't come as a shock after it emerged on Friday that he had been offered to Kaizer Chiefs. For Mako, this is a bit surprising given the fact that he was considered one of the senior members of the Pirates squad. However, looking at their contributions last season, the defensive duo of Mako and Monyane did not do enough. Former Proteas cricketer convicted in T20 match-fixing scandal

Former Proteas, Lions and Titans player Gulam Bodi was the first to be convicted and sentenced. A 43-year-old former Proteas cricketer has been convicted on a charge of corruption linked to the 2015–2016 T20 Ram Slam match-fixing scandal. Ntateko Ethy Mbhlati appeared before the Pretoria Specialised Commercial Crime Court this week, where he was found guilty of match fixing and sentenced. This brings to four the number of former players who have been convicted and sentenced in relation to the T20 match-fixing scandal. Match fixing In 2016, an anti-corruption official at Cricket South Africa (CSA) received information about allegations of match fixing by a former player. The former player approached several South African cricket players to participate in a scheme to fix three 2015 and 2016 T20 Ram Slam matches. A preliminary investigation revealed that at least six cricket players were approached by the former player and bookmakers from India to participate in the match-fixing scheme. On 26 October 2016, the anti-corruption unit at Cricket South Africa reported the matter to the Hawks' Serious Corruption investigation team for further investigation. Hawks spokesperson Colonel Katlego Mogale said that the successful investigation led to the arrest and conviction of three cricket players in 2018 and 2022. Mbhalati appeared in court on several occasions until his recent conviction. 'The court sentenced Mbhalati to five years imprisonment wholly suspended for five years on condition that he is not found guilty of the same offence during the period of suspension, ' Mogale said. Other Proteas Mogale said Tsotsobe and Tsolekile's cases are still ongoing, and they will make their next appearance in the Pretoria Specialised Commercial Crimes Court on 2 October 2025. A former Proteas, Lions and Titans player, Gulam Bodi, was the first to be convicted in this case, receiving a five-year imprisonment sentence in October 2019, after he admitted to charges of attempting to fix matches in the same series. Bodi acted as an intermediary for international betting syndicates, approaching certain players with a view to engaging in fixing activities during the competition. This is our best team outside the rested five players, says Shukri Conrad

Keshav Maharaj Keshav Maharaj and captain Temba Bavuma among the seasoned campaigners named in the squad to tour Zimbabwe later this month. | AFP Proteas coach Shukri Conrad has rested five key players for the upcoming Test tour to Zimbabwe later this month, where South Africa will play two-match Tests at the Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo. The players are fast bowlers Kagiso Rabada and Marco Jansen, batters Ryan Rickelton, Aiden Markram and Tristan Stubbs, who have been juggling all formats of international cricket and the various T20 leagues around the world. The idea is to rest the key players so that they can return fresh for the new cycle, a cycle which includes Test tours to India and Pakistan, two subcontinent countries which are difficult to tour. Conrad believes that the selected players are the next best for the Test side outside the five rested all-format players. "We've rested five of our cross-format players because of a heavy workload post the Zim series, and this will be the next best group of players that could potentially play for South Africa in Test cricket. "So, where does it fit in? We still got to put our best teams, and outside of the five guys that are being rested, I believe that this is the next best 15 or 16, so to speak," Conrad told the media on Friday. "But it is a great opportunity where we keep one eye on possibly Pakistan and India, where we're probably going to have to play two or three spinners. So it'll be a great opportunity for Prenelan Subrayen to play both Test matches with Kesh, with a view to the upcoming series later. "And then also have a look at how some of the younger bucks go. Matthew Breetzke had one go at it in Bangladesh, left a straight one. He's been our reserve batter, so he's the next man up again. "We're obviously looking to win the series in Zimbabwe, but like we do everything else, and we've got to show them the necessary respect and Test cricket the necessary respect by selecting what we believe are our best teams. So as I mentioned, outside of the guys rested, this is our best team." Titans top-order batter, Lesego Senokwane, has received a maiden Test call-up following being a top performer in domestic cricket for several years. Youngster Lhuan-dre Pretorius and fast bowler Codi Yusuf also received their maiden call-ups, while uncapped players Dewald Brevis and Prenalan Subrayen are also included in the squad. Conrad told the media that he has known Senokwane for a long time and that his performances in the CSA Four-Day competition have warranted his selection. "I've known Lesego (Senokwane) for a few years now as well. His form took a slight dip, but that's pretty natural. But if you look at his form in the last two years in First-Class cricket, right up here, it's always nice to be able to have young opening bats," said Conrad. "So, as much as you want to build your reserves in the bowling department, you also want to build your reserves in the batting department. So, someone like Lesego has done particularly well, plays the short ball really well. And yeah, he's been a real journeyman in our first-class game, and his performances definitely warrant his selection. "And again, it's a great opportunity. We've included a bit more experienced guy in Zubay Hamza as well. So, there'll be enough experience to guide some of these younger bucks along as well." South Africa Test Squad against Zimbabwe Temba Bavuma (captain), David Bedingham, Matthew Breetzke, Dewald Brevis, Corbin Bosch, Tony de Zorzi, Zubayr Hamza, Keshav Maharaj, Kwena Maphaka, Wiaan Mulder, Lungi Ngidi, Lhuan-dré Pretorius, Lesego Senokwane, Prenelan Subrayen, Kyle Verreynne and Codi Yusuf.
