Sabah committed to strengthening people's wellbeing agenda, says Hajiji

TUARAN (May 16): The State Government remains steadfast in its commitment to ensure that the people of Sabah are not left behind in the country's social development progress.
Chief Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Hajiji Noor underscored that the wellbeing of the people continues to be a key agenda under the state's administration.
He said the State Government has allocated RM162.42 million this year to the Ministry of Community Development and People's Wellbeing Sabah and its agencies to implement a wide range of social programmes that directly benefit the people.
'This year, the government has channelled RM76.29 million to assist persons with disabilities (OKU), senior citizens, single mothers, children and orphans through various targeted aid schemes.
'Meanwhile, RM956,000 has also been allocated for people's wellbeing programmes, covering aspects such as family development, consumer education, women's empowerment and healthy living,' he said when officiating the Kembara Kasih 2025 Programme by the Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development (KPWKM) and the launch of the Mobile Local Social Support Centre (PSSS) in Tuaran on Friday.
In addition, Hajiji said RM550,000 was channelled to the Malaysian Drug Prevention Association (PEMADAM) Sabah to support efforts to curb drug abuse, particularly among school students.
He also expressed his appreciation to the Federal Government, especially KPWKM, for extending various forms of aid and services to the people of Sabah.
This includes RM300,000 in flood relief aid for Sabah in 2025 through the National Welfare Foundation (YKN) and RM2.1 million allocated to support the needs of 384 Temporary Evacuation Centres (PPS) during flood disasters statewide.
According to him, RM330 million under the Federal Government's 2025 Financial Assistance Programme has been allocated for Sabah, with RM315 million distributed to 45,572 aid recipients under the Social Welfare Department (JKM).
'This effort reflects the Federal Government's serious attention to the wellbeing of the people of Sabah and its readiness to further strengthen the social safety net,' he said.
Touching on the launch of the mobile PSSS, Hajiji described the initiative as a timely response to the increasingly concerning mental health crisis across the country, particularly in the aftermath of the Covid-19 pandemic.
He cited a report by the Ministry of Health Malaysia (KKM) which revealed that more than five million Malaysians suffer from mental health issues such as depression, anxiety and stress, including a rise in suicide cases.
'This mobile PSSS is expected to reach rural communities and provide much-needed psychosocial support, including for those affected by divorce, abuse, unemployment and financial hardship,' he said.
Hajiji also called on the public, especially those located along the KPWKM 2025 Kembara Kasih route, to attend and make full use of the range of services offered throughout the programme.
The KPWKM 2025 Kembara Kasih programme involves two main zones in Sabah namely Tuaran, Papar and Penampang (Zone 1); and Lahad Datu, Kunak and Tawau (Zone 2). It brings together various government agencies on the ground to deliver comprehensive welfare services to the people.
Hajiji expressed hope that such programmes would continue and be expanded to other areas in the future as part of the ongoing efforts to enhance the wellbeing of the people.
Present at the KPWKM 2025 Kembara Kasih Convoy was the Minister of Women, Family and Community Development of Malaysia, Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri.

PETALING JAYA: The government's efforts to collate detailed records of phone calls and internet usage from telecommunications firms are a violation of the people's right to their personal data, said Datuk Dr Wee Ka Siong. He also said there is no need to have such detailed information for facilitating policymaking in the information, communications and technology (ICT) sector, and the tourism sector, as clarified by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC). 'This is not a question of whether we trust in the current government or not. The question is, why does the government want to collect such detailed information on its citizens? 'Today, we say it's to study tourism statistics. We don't know what it'll be for tomorrow. 'You want to calculate tourists? You want to calculate active broadband users? You don't need the people's personal data. Aggregate data is enough,' Dr Wee said in a posting on his Facebook page on Saturday (June 7). It was previously reported that, according to industry sources, the government in April had ordered telcos in Malaysia to hand over detailed records of phone calls and internet logs for the first three months of this year, supposedly for the government's 'Mobile Phone Data' project. The records demanded purportedly include information about call logs, IP call records, location, latitude and longitude. It was also reported that if the telcos failed to comply, it would be considered an offence under the Communications and Multimedia Act, carrying a penalty of RM20,000 fine or six months' jail. MCMC has since explained that this move is to support evidence-based policymaking in two key sectors, i.e. the ICT and tourism sectors. The commission also stressed that the data will be anonymised before it is submitted to them and that no individual subscriber can be identified through the data collected. 'In both cases, no individual subscriber can be identified through the data collected,' MCMC said. However, Dr Wee said anonymising the data is not enough to maintain the privacy of the users, especially in an increasingly connected world. 'If you're collecting data on who we call, how long we talk, our Internet IP, and our location, including latitude and longitude - with such consistent location data showing the exact time and day, anyone with access to this data can easily match it back to our identities. 'Our identities can be uncovered very easily,' he said. On top of that, he added, there is also data from the mobile app MySejahtera, e-wallets, CCTVs, Touch n' Go and bank records which can be cross-checked to identify someone. MCMC had also previously said they engaged extensively with all telcos over the past two years on the safe handover of the data, but Dr Wee questioned the need to threaten the telcos if this is true. 'If it is true that this is all safe and it has all been agreed upon for two years, why is there a need to threaten the telcos?' Ultimately, he said, this is not about politics but about the rights of the people. 'Our personal data is not the right of any government, whether today, tomorrow or those to come. 'When the government starts collecting such detailed data, that has already crossed the line. 'The Malaysian people must raise this issue. Our data is not a plaything.'

GRS machinery fully prepared for State Election - Hajiji
Hajiji TUARAN (June 7): Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) is fully prepared to face the 17th state election, said its chairman, Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor. Hajiji, who is also the Chief Minister, said GRS has conducted a series of training sessions across constituencies and state assembly areas to strengthen the coalition's election machinery ahead of the polls. 'Clearly, GRS is ready. We have established our election machinery and conducted several rounds of training in preparation. 'However, discussions on seat allocations have yet to take place,' he told reporters after officiating the Aidiladha sacrificial ritual at the Tuaran District Police Headquarters on Saturday. Also present were Sabah Minister of Rural Development, Datuk Jahid Jahim; Assistant Minister of Tourism, Culture and Environment, Datuk Joniston Bangkuai; and Tuaran Police Chief, Supt Noraidin Ag Maidin. The Sabah Legislative Assembly will automatically dissolve on Nov 11, ending the five-year term that began with its official opening by Sabah Yang Dipertua Negeri Tun Juhar Mahiruddin on Nov 12, 2020, paving the way for the 17th state election. Commenting on the cooperation with Barisan Nasional (BN) for the upcoming election, Hajiji said GRS remains open to discussions with the party's leaders. 'The last time I met the BN chairman (Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi) was before the fasting month. While political matters were discussed, there have been no further talks on collaboration or related issues since then. 'There is no issue with meeting; I have great respect for all friends, especially the BN chairman, and we are very open on this matter,' he said. However, he said any party-related matters, including the 17th state election and potential cooperation with other parties, must first be discussed with the GRS Supreme Council before any decisions are made. On Thursday, Hajiji said the GRS Supreme Council will be meeting soon to chart their direction for the 17th state election. He said the meeting would discuss on potential partners, seat allocations and other relevant matters.

GRS intensifies preparations for 17th Sabah state polls
KOTA KINABALU: Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) has intensified its preparations for the 17th state election (PRN17), with comprehensive training sessions for its machinery conducted across all constituencies and state assembly areas. GRS chairman Datuk Seri Panglima Hajiji Noor, who is also GRS chairman, said the coalition's election machinery is now fully activated, with grassroots-level training playing a key role in ensuring readiness. 'GRS is clearly prepared. We have set up our election machinery and carried out multiple training sessions to ensure every constituency is ready for the upcoming election,' he said. Speaking at the 2025 Ibadah Qurban Programme at the Tuaran district police headquarters on Saturday (June 7), Hajiji noted that discussions on seat allocations have yet to be held. He also confirmed that he had met with Barisan Nasional chairman Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi before Ramadan to discuss potential political cooperation. 'We had a discussion before Ramadan (around February), but no final decision was made. 'Any decision on possible cooperation must be referred to the GRS supreme council before we move forward,' he said. In conjunction with the Aidiladha celebration, Hajiji expressed hope that the occasion would encourage a deeper sense of unity and sacrifice among Malaysians, especially Muslims. 'Aidiladha is not just about the ritual of animal sacrifice, it also teaches us values like cooperation, tolerance, and willingness to make sacrifices for the greater good. 'This means prioritising unity and working together for a better future for Sabah's diverse communities,' he said. Earlier in the day, Hajiji joined around 1,000 worshippers for Aidiladha prayers at Masjid Haji Noor in Kampung Serusop. He was accompanied by state Rural Development Minister Datuk Jahid Jahim, state Assistant Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Joniston Bangkuai, Tuaran MP Datuk Seri Wilfred Madius Tangau, and Pantai Dalit assemblyman Datuk Jasnih Daya. Together, they symbolically handed over sacrificial cattle to Tuaran OCPD Supt Noraidin Ag Maidin.
