Kadu Ends Hunger Strike After State Govt Assurance

Time of India10 hours ago

Nagpur/Amravati: Prahar Janshakti Party (PJP) president Bachchu Kadu on Saturday ended his week-long hunger strike at Gurukunj Mozari in Amravati after receiving a written assurance from the Maharashtra govt regarding his key demands.
Industries Minister Uday Samant handed Kadu an official letter from revenue minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule, confirming the state's commitment to address the issues in a time-bound manner.
Kadu, who was on hunger strike since Sunday last, was demanding the implementation of 17 key demands, most prominently a blanket farm loan waiver, issuance of fresh agricultural loans ahead of the kharif season, and an increase in the monthly honorarium to persons with disabilities (divyangs).
According to the letter from Bawankule, the govt agreed to constitute a high-powered committee within 15 days to finalise the mechanism for the farm loan waiver. A formal decision on the waiver will follow the committee's report. It also states that the govt will hold a separate meeting to decide on stopping the forcible recovery of pending farm loans and facilitating the disbursal of new crop loans.
Regarding the hike in the monthly honorarium for divyangs, the letter notes that a budgetary provision for this will be included in the supplementary demands scheduled for the monsoon session of the legislature beginning June 30.
For the remaining demands, the govt assured further meetings with concerned ministers and the chief minister.
K
adu ended his agitation after recieving the letter, breaking his fast by accepting juice from Samant. Later, both leaders paid tribute to Rashtrasant Tukadoji Maharaj at Mozari. MLA Amol Mitkari and senior leader Kamaltai Gawai were also present. Kadu also spoke with CM Devendra Fadnavis on the phone.
Samant expressed gratitude to Kadu for responding positively to the state's appeal. "The govt has taken his demands seriously. His health deteriorated over the past few days, and we are relieved that he has ended his fast," he said.
Kadu, while thanking supporters, warned that if the promises made are not implemented, he along with supporters will march into Mumbai's Mantralaya on Oct 2. "This is only a pause. If the govt does not act, we will return with stronger resolve," he said.
The protest, which drew wide political attention and backing from opposition parties including the Congress, was aimed at pressing for unconditional farm loan waivers and urgent relief measures for affected communities. Congress Legislature Party leader Vijay Wadettiwar earlier expressed solidarity with Kadu, urging the govt to act instead of issuing fresh assurances. "If the govt is serious, it must act, not delay further," Wadettiwar said.

Was Pakistan Field Marshal Asim Munir Invited To US Military Parade? Washington Says...

After speculations bubbled up about a possible invitation to Pakistan Field Marshal Asim Munir for the United States' Military Parade, the White House debunked the claims and clarified its stand on the matter. "This is false. No foreign military leaders were invited," according to IANS, a White House official stated. US Army Birthday The parade commemorates the formal founding of the US Army on June 14, 1775. It was formulated to fight the British colonialists, one year before the US attained Independence. Thousands of troops, several tanks, helicopters, and other military hardware were scheduled to participate in the parade, which will also feature flyovers. Moreover, the US does not have a tradition of such military parades like the Indian Republic Day or French Bastille Day parades. The US witnessed a military show last time in 1991 when the National Victory Celebration was held after it defeated Iraq in the First Gulf War to liberate Kuwait, which was also known as 'Operation Desert Storm.' The date of the US Army's Founding Day coincides with the birthday of US President Trump, who turned 79. Congress leader Jairam Ramesh was among the people who had claimed of invitation to Asim Munir. The Resistance Front (TRF), a proxy outfit of the Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), had initially claimed responsibility for the attack but later retracted. This led to New Delhi taking action against Islamabad on the diplomatic front. The Indian Armed Forces on May 7 launched Operation Sindoor, targeting terrorist infrastructure sites in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK). The strikes were precise and non-escalatory in nature; however, Pakistan turned offensive and launched a swarm of drones and missile attacks on the Indian territory. Following the actions of Pakistan, India took action as well and strikes were carried out on multiple Pakistani airbases. On the diplomatic front, New Delhi announced the formation and travel of seven All-Party Delegations, which carried on India's policy of zero tolerance towards terrorism to key partner nations. Immediately after India's announcement regarding the All-Party Delegations, Pakistan took a similar decision, and former Foreign Minister of the Islamic State Bilawal Bhutto Zardari was entrusted to carry out a mission like India's. But, reportedly, the Pakistan People's Party leader failed to meet any senior US official above the rank of an Under Secretary.

PM has energy for foreign tours, but no empathy to visit Manipur: Congress

Taking a swipe at Prime Minister Narendra Modi over his three-nation tour, the Congress on Sunday said he has all the energy, excitement, and enthusiasm -- '3 Es' -- for such visits and asked can he not summon up a 4th E -- empathy -- for going to Manipur "where the people's suffering continues unabated". The opposition party also said this is Modi's 35th trip abroad since May 2023 and it was "pathetic of the PM to treat Manipur in this awful manner". "The Prime Minister leaves for Cyprus, Canada, and Croatia this morning. There was a time when he boasted about his knowledge of algebra by spouting the (a+b)^2 equation as applicable to India and Canada. But things went horribly wrong thereafter," Congress general secretary in-charge communications Jairam Ramesh said in a post on X. "When it appeared that Canada was dragging its feet on the invite to India, Mr. Modi's drum beaters proclaimed that he would not go even if like always, he stands exposed," Ramesh claimed. The Canadian prime minister has said that India has been invited to the G7 Summit along with a number of other non-G7 countries because India is the fifth largest economy in the world, Ramesh pointed out. "Perhaps Mr. Modi can remind him that according to the Niti Aayog CEO, India became the world's third largest economy on May 24, 2025," the Congress leader said. The Congress leader also shared a video clip of the PM from 2015 in which he is heard giving a mathematical analogy to demonstrate the relationship between the two countries. Ramesh said, "This is Mr. Modi's 35th trip abroad since May 2023. He has all the energy, excitement, and enthusiasm--the 3 Es-- for such visits. But can he not summon up a 4th E--empathy-- for going to Manipur where the people's distress, agony and suffering continues unabated?" "He has met with NOBODY from the state, let alone political leaders, since May 3, 2023. Pathetic of the PM to treat Manipur in this awful manner," he added. The Congress has been attacking the prime minister for not visiting Manipur besides slamming the Centre for its handling of the situation in the ethnic strife-torn northeastern state. More than 220 people have been killed and thousands rendered homeless in ethnic violence between Imphal Valley-based Meiteis and adjoining hills-based Kuki-Zo groups since May 2023. The Congress last week had accused Prime Minister Modi of "insensitivity" to the suffering of people in the state. Ramesh had said the suffering of the people of Manipur is not only of the state and the northeastern region but of the entire country. The Centre had on February 13 imposed President's rule in the northeastern state after Chief Minister N Biren Singh resigned. The state assembly, which had a tenure till 2027, has been put under suspended animation. Prime Minister Modi on Sunday morning embarked on a three-nation tour during which he will take part in the G7 Summit in Canada, and visit Cyprus and Croatia to shore up India's bilateral cooperation with these two countries. Modi will first be in Cyprus at the invitation of the country's president, Nikos Christodoulides. In the second leg of his visit, Prime Minister Modi will travel to Kananaskis in Canada on June 16-17 to participate in the G7 Summit at the invitation of Canada Prime Minister Mark Carney. In the final leg of his tour, Modi will undertake an official visit to Croatia on June 18 at the invitation of the prime minister of the European country, Andrej Plenkovic.

Karnataka: Of stampede, politics and a caste census

If that was the case, how did a legal provision, which rendered a report, prepared by spending over Rs 165 crore, redundant go unnoticed all these years? That is not clear. Rejecting a report for its findings is one thing but letting it become redundant due to authorities' inaction is another! In any case, it is a major relief for Congress as the data from the 2015 SES could have put the party on a collision course with the dominant communities, Lingayats and Vokkaligas. However, the sudden change in the party's stand is seen as a temporary setback for Siddaramaiah. He had commissioned the 2015 survey during his first tenure as CM, from 2013-18. Now, as the government prepares for a fresh survey it should ensure that all communities are taken into confidence about its intent and process. It should not descend into yet another tool for politics or create social fissures on caste lines. While the politics over the caste census will go on, the State Government should not dodge its responsibility to do justice to victims of the stampede. It must introspect on the tragedy that exposed the shortcomings in the system. By the government's admission, the police failed; the CM was not informed for over two hours after the tragedy, and the event at the stadium was illegal as no formal permission was obtained. But, merely blaming the Bengaluru police and pointing fingers at others does not absolve the government of its responsibility. It also points to the failure of the overseeing mechanism of the state administration. If there was no permission for the event at the stadium, why did the DyCM participate in it? Why cricket fans were invited to be part of the celebrations there? Now, over 10 days after the stampede, the blame game continues. The BJP-JDS are blaming the political leadership, and the government faults the organisers. Congress is citing similar tragedies in other states to respond to opposition demands for CM's resignation. It is better to keep politics aside and make earnest efforts to ensure that accountability is fixed and that the victims' families get justice. As the government gets busy with the caste census and the politics surrounding it, it should not lose sight of those who lost their dear ones, many of them ardent fans who rushed to the stadium to be part of the celebrations of RCB winning the trophy after 18 long years. They trusted the state to have taken adequate measures for their safety. If those responsible for the stampede are not held accountable, if this concludes as yet another episode of political slugfest and buck-passing, it will bring disrepute to the state. Further, citizens will lose faith not just in the government, but in systems of governance and administration.
