Man United 'back onto the market': Ratcliffe and Qatar's latest signals on ownership

Yahoo3 hours ago
Manchester United are 'back onto the market' and the respective stances of Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Qatari royal Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad al-Thani have emerged.
United back onto the market
Mike Keegan of the Daily Mail points out that last Wednesday, United quietly crept 'back onto the market' due to a clause that was agreed between the Glazers and Sir Jim Ratcliffe when the latter officially became co-owner in February 2024.
The clause, referred to as the 'drag-along right', was put in place to ensure that minority owners do not block arrangements that the majority favour. In United's case, it means that Ratcliffe can no longer stand in the Glazers' way if they want to sell the club.
This contractual provision was set to kick in 18 months after Ratcliffe completed his partial investment in United. It outlines that the Glazers can not only sell their stake in the Red Devils, but also force the INEOS billionaire to do the same. According to Keegan, Ratcliffe is fully aware that this clause is in effect but there has been nothing to suggest that the Glazers will exercise it.
The drag-along right assures Ratcliffe the best price given to shareholders of his share class. A sale within three years would trigger a minimum price of $33 per share, equal to Ratcliffe's outlay 18 months ago.
It's understood that Ratcliffe and the Glazers enjoy an amicable relationship.
A source told the Daily Mail, 'They absolutely get on. So much so that Jim has flown over to the US on multiple occasions to have board meetings on their doorstep. They are like-minded people.'
'Ineos have come in, recognised that the business was bloated and have carried out the necessary measures to make it something approaching lean. They have also taken all the flak for that and for the first time in a long time, someone other than the Glazers has been taking the hits from the fanbase.'
'That hasn't gone unnoticed. To add to that, they have taken control of all football operations and are effectively running that side of the business, so that eases another headache. Then there's the new stadium, which Ineos is attempting to find the funding for.'
'They have attracted the big-hitters to the project, such as Lord Coe, they appear to have political backing locally and they are getting on with it.'
The insider added, 'Then there's also the investment, which came as part of the deal. Sir Jim has put in $300m of his own money, which has paid for the £50m upgrade to Carrington. It has been a very long time since someone has put some money into Manchester United rather than take it out. To put it simply, if you're the Glazers, what is not to like?'
Qatar and Sheikh Jassim's position on trying to buy United again
With United possibly up for sale again, there are questions regarding whether Sheikh Jassim will launch another attempt to complete a full takeover of the club.
Sheikh Jassim rivalled Ratcliffe during the takeover process but eventually lost out to the British businessman, whose minority bid valued United slightly higher.
On whether Sheikh Jassim could throw his hat back in the ring, Keegan explains that the Qatari banker has 'zero interest' in a second bite of the apple, with his focus currently on other 'mega projects.'
A source divulged to the newspaper, 'Things have changed and the project would be seen as even more difficult now for a few reasons, not least because there's a belief the standard of the Premier League has improved and it would be more difficult to turn things around.'
'There's other priorities now. The Qatar universe is doing well, they are on with different projects.'
INEOS have no desire to exit United
Despite the rocky start to life at Old Trafford, it's said that Ratcliffe and INEOS have no intention of leaving.
They have 'zero appetite' to sell and remain fully focused on restoring United to their past glories as quickly as possible. Ratcliffe is of the opinion that the hard part is already over and it may not be long until United start to reap the benefits of the tough measures put in place.

Ravens' Lamar Jackson OK after injury scare: ‘Prayers do get answered'

OWINGS MILLS, Md. — Baltimore Ravens coach John Harbaugh said Lamar Jackson is fine, and that an X-ray taken after the quarterback had his foot stepped on during Wednesday's practice revealed no concerns. Jackson exited Wednesday's practice with about 30 minutes remaining in the workout and did not practice Thursday, the team's final session before Saturday's preseason finale against the Washington Commanders. Jackson, the two-time league MVP, has not played this preseason and wasn't expected to play Saturday, even before he got banged up. Advertisement 'He got his foot stepped on like we said yesterday,' Harbaugh said after Thursday's practice. 'They did a quick X-ray, and there's no damage or anything like that. I'm sure it's a little sore today, so we just kept him in. He's going to be good.' It wasn't initially clear what led to Jackson going to the ground after throwing a pass during a full-team session late in Wednesday's practice. Two of the Ravens' offensive linemen immediately ran toward Jackson to help him up. Jackson stayed on the field for a few more plays after the fall, although he didn't look entirely comfortable. He threw a few errant passes and, at one point, appeared to be flexing his right hand/wrist. Jackson then walked inside the team facility alongside head strength and conditioning coordinator Scott Elliott. Members of the team's medical and athletic training staff joined them in the building later. Harbaugh didn't speak to reporters on Wednesday, and offensive coordinator Todd Monken said he didn't see the play where Jackson hit the ground. A Ravens spokesperson told reporters Jackson just had his foot stepped on. Harbaugh said Thursday that the clean X-ray was a 'big relief.' 'I told the guys, 'Prayers do get answered,'' Harbaugh said. 'I was praying.' Cooper Rush is Jackson's backup and is expected to start Saturday against the Commanders at Northwest Stadium. Spot the pattern. WR Ja'Lynn Polk, Patriots' second-round pick in 2024, to miss season with shoulder injury

In another setback for what already looks like the biggest bust in a terrible draft class, New England Patriots 2024 second-round pick Ja'Lynn Polk is planning to undergo season-ending shoulder surgery, a league source confirmed Thursday. Jordan Schultz was the first to report the news. Polk had shoulder surgery earlier in the offseason, too, but it's unclear if that was on the same shoulder as the current injury. Polk was limited to begin training camp because of the previous injury, then appeared to either reaggravate it or suffer a new injury in the Pats' first preseason game against the Washington Commanders. Advertisement It's a big blow for a wide receiver who was trying to put the woes of his rookie season behind him. Polk was drafted with the 37th overall pick last year, but had one of the least productive rookie seasons in a decade for a top-50 pick at his position. Polk finished with 12 catches on 33 targets, which he turned into 87 yards over 15 games. He also drew some frustration internally when, amid his struggles, he told MassLive that he had the 'best hands in the league.' Polk was the 10th wide receiver drafted in 2024. He finished last season 37th in receiving yards by a rookie. It continued a long trend of poor drafts from the Patriots at the position. Polk, Javon Baker, Tyquan Thornton, N'Keal Harry, Malcolm Mitchell and Aaron Dobson were all wide receivers taken by the Pats in the last 15 years with top 120 picks. None has been successful as a pro. Still, the loss of Polk for this season doesn't do much to shift the Patriots' outlook at wide receiver. They have six players who seem safely on the team entering the final preseason game: Stefon Diggs, DeMario Douglas, Mack Hollins, Kyle Williams, Kayshon Boutte and Efton Chism III. Baker enters the preseason finale on Thursday likely on the wrong side of the roster bubble, but with a chance to make a good final impression. Polk's season-long injury could put an exclamation point on what looks like a memorably bad 2024 draft class for New England. There's a chance that Drake Maye could be the only player from that eight-person class who plays for the Patriots in 2025. Spot the pattern.
