Parents back plan for fence at Cleobury Mortimer primary school

BBC News4 hours ago
Parents in a Shropshire town are backing a primary school that said it wants to fence off its sports field to keep children safe.Lee Blount, who has two children at Cleobury Mortimer Primary School, said pupils had been at risk of aggressive dogs and their mess for too long.Shropshire Gateway Educational Trust, which runs the school, said the boundary of the field needed to be made secure in the interest of safeguarding. But some residents living in the town claimed they had a legal right to access the land at all times.
"I'm sick and tired of my children having to try and pick up dog mess before a PE lesson," said parent Lee Blount."I went to this school as a child and there has always been a problem with people walking their dogs."The 45-year-old claimed "99% of parents" with children at the school wanted a fence. The recreation ground off Love Lane is essentially two fields in one, with no physical boundary separating them. Cleobury Mortimer Town Council owns the larger field to the west, while Shropshire Council leases the smaller plot to the east of the adjoining primary school.
Sarita Smith, who has two children at the school, said parents had complained about their children going home from school with dog poo on their shoes and uniform."It's a health and safety issue," she said. "It would be so much more secure with a fence and if we've got that opportunity now then let's do it."A covenant in the deeds, agreed in 1973 by the then-parish and county councils, stated residents should have access to the school field "at all times for the purpose of informal recreational activities," providing they do not "unreasonably interfere with organised school activities in progress".
Parent Grainger Jones, who has recently organised several community cricket tournaments, said there was also a covenant permitting a cricket pitch, which would not be possible if a fence divided the two fields."All of a sudden, a big educational trust has come along and used their legal might to try and grab the land from the community," said Mr Jones, whose daughter attends the primary school."If the school wants to put the kids behind fences, then they can walk over to the nearby senior school and access the all the fenced-off playing fields there. It's all part of the same trust."The town council said it wanted to hear from the community before agreeing to, or fighting against, the fence.
It has criticised the school trust for not engaging enough with the community and for not undertaking a public consultation. The town council said: "No compromise has been offered by the school and sadly, Shropshire Council are not concerned about a fence, despite being reminded of the covenants."The school engaged the services of a solicitor who also disputes the covenants and the public use of the land, even at weekends, and this action has set back communications."The council was approached for comment but directed the BBC to the Shropshire Gateway Education Trust. "The Shropshire Gateway Educational Trust is dedicated to doing its best for children and this includes safeguarding," the trust said in a statement."The boundary of the school field needs to be made secure and we have spent, and continue to spend, considerable time liaising with the community over a resolution."A second public meeting organised by the town council will take place on 4 September.

Liverpool vs Bournemouth predictions: Premier League tips and odds

Our expert has two tips for Friday's Premier League opener between Liverpool and Bournemouth at Anfield (kick-off, 8pm). We think the Reds can start their title defence with victory. Liverpool vs Bournemouth tips Liverpool to win and under 4.5 goals @ 5/6 with Paddy Power Florian Wirtz to have an assist @ 7/5 with Paddy Power Odds courtesy of Paddy Power. Match details What: Liverpool vs Bournemouth, Premier League Where: Anfield When: 8pm, Friday August 15 How to watch: Sky Sports Main Event/Sky Sports Premier League Opener may be tighter than expected Defending champions Liverpool host Bournemouth in the Premier League's curtain-raiser on Friday night and, while Arne Slot's men should start the season with a win, it may not be as high-scoring as the market suggests. Over 2.5 goals in this game is as short as 1/3, while over 3.5 goals is also odds-on. That could well be due to the fact Bournemouth's defence was decimated by departures this summer. Dean Huijsen, Milos Kerkez and Ilia Zabarnyi have all left the club this transfer window – Kerkez leaving to join Liverpool – and the Cherries are still looking to recruit replacements. But while their defensive revamp could prove to be an issue in the long term, it does not necessarily mean they will implode at Anfield, where Liverpool to win and under 4.5 goals is the best bet at 5/6. Bournemouth have at least brought in a decent goalkeeper in Djordje Petrovic, who could be busy on Friday but had the second-best save percentage (78.9 per cent) on loan at Strasbourg last season and is as short as 8/15 to make four or more saves. Marcos Senesi, Chris Mepham and Julian Araujo are still defenders with Premier League experience and can limit opportunities for the Reds, who were far from their best in the Community Shield. They should have enough firepower to get over the line, though, and a similar scoreline to their 2-0 and 3-0 wins over Bournemouth last season could be on the cards. Wirtz can make immediate impact Those looking for a player bet should look no further than new Liverpool man Florian Wirtz to register an assist at 7/5. Wirtz racked up 12 assists in the Bundesliga last season, the second-highest tally in the division, and he should be a regular supplier of goalscoring opportunities for Mohamed Salah and Hugo Ekitike. The German set up Ekitike's opening goal against Crystal Palace on Sunday and was fearless with his distribution, completing 25 out of 28 passes in the final third. Chelsea legend splits from his wife of 26 years - with Premier League icon sharing an emotional post on social media

Former Chelsea and Arsenal goalkeeper Petr Cech has announced that he and his wife have separated after 26 years of marriage. The 43-year-old took to Instagram on Thursday to reveal the news to fans with an emotional statement. Cech and Martina had been together since they were teenagers and she was by his side throughout his legendary footballing career. The pair have two children named named Damian (16) and Adela Cechova (17). Cech made the announcement alongside a black and white picture of himself and Martina in which she is kissing him on the cheek. He wrote: 'Martina and myself are sad to announce that we are separating after 26 years together. 'We remain best friends and immensely proud of our two children.' The Czechs first met in high school in 1999 and went on to marry in the summer of 2003. Both of their children are attempting to follow in the footsteps of their famous father. Daughter Adela is a defender and plays for both Fulham and Czechia U17. And their son Damian, a goalkeeper just like his dad, signed his first professional contract with the London club earlier this year. Damian previously played for Chelsea before making the swap from blue to white. Petr, meanwhile, told 'I didn't push my children into football, but they found it anyway. They just live with my name, so they have been the target of comparison since they were young.' Damian had joined Fulham's Under-15 set-up, and made his debut for his country's Under-18s in August last year at just 15. Adela made her debut for Czechia's youth side in February against Mexico in the MIMA Cup. Cechova is described by her coach, Daniel Smejkal, as 'a promising defender' who the set-up wanted to 'get to know better' during the camp in Spain. She came on during the second half of her side's game against Mexico, though Czechia were on the wrong side of a 3-0 scoreline. Having missed her birth in 2008, Cech told the People magazine: 'It was the best day of my life and at the same time the saddest. I was happy to be a father and proud of my wife, but sad to have missed the birth. 'My daughter decided she would come in the middle of the night without me being able to do anything, so I had to wait glued to the phone.' Cech was absent from the birth because he was with the Chelsea squad ahead of a League Cup semi-final against Everton. The Premier League icon spent more than a decade with the Blues, joining in 2004 from French side Rennes and going onto make just short of 500 appearances before moving across London. After leaving Chelsea, he signed for Arsenal and went onto play 139 times in goal for the Gunners, donning his famous helmet that he had to wear due to an injury sustained earlier in his career.
