Skateboarding-Hawk puts his history-making '900' skateboard up for auction

Reuters30-06-2025
June 30 (Reuters) - Skateboarding great Tony Hawk has announced that he is putting his most famous deck up for auction with the goal of raising money to build skateparks in underserved areas.
Hawk landed his groundbreaking "900" - 2-1/2 full mid-air rotations - at the 1999 X Games in a moment that helped propel the sport out of the subculture and into the mainstream.
The Birdhouse "Falcon 2" board is expected to fetch between $500,000 and $700,000 when it goes on the block in Los Angeles on September 23, according to Julien's Auctions.
Hawk called the moment he became the first skateboarder to land the trick in front of a roaring X Games crowd after several failed attempts on June 27, 1999 "the best day of my life."
"It was a huge moment in my career - the result of years of persistence and getting back up after every fall," he said in a press release.
Other items up for sale include Hawk's signed helmet, knee pads, sneakers, and the 1999 X Games Vert Finals bronze medal.
"I never imagined that my board, pads or helmet from that day would be of any interest to collectors," he said.
A portion of the sale proceeds will benefit The Skatepark Project (TSP), Hawk's foundation supporting skatepark construction in underserved communities.
TSP grant programs have awarded over $13 million to help fund nearly 700 public skateparks in all 50 U.S. states, enjoyed by an estimated 17 million people annually, according to the non-profit organisation's website.

Jason Momoa opens up about 'brutal' surfing accident in ferocious Hawaii waves

revealed how he almost died in a terrifying surfing accident that still haunts him to this day. The 46-year-old actor opened up to Jason Bateman, Will Arnett, and Sean Hayes on the latest episode of the Smartless podcast about how he nearly drowned after 'giving up' off the coast of Maui, Hawaii, in 2007. He explained that he and a group of friends were enjoying a a 13-mile paddle along the island's coast when the situation took a dire turn when his leash snapped. He said: 'I was doing this paddle, we went in at Jaws,' referring to the surf break located on the northern shore of Maui, which draws the world's top surfers to its enormous - and deadly - waves. He said: 'You're kind of almost a mile offshore, and then my leash snapped. We're about seven miles into it and my leash snapped, and it's so windy on Maui.' Jason, who was at the time starring on Stargate: Atlantis, said he was 'trained pretty well' at the time, so he initially felt 'fine,' but things took a turn for the worse as waves began to batter him. 'I took quite a few on the head. They're pretty big, like 10-foot Hawaiian waves,' he shared. 'But I'm probably half a mile at that point offshore.' But as he began to tire from staying afloat in the chaotic sea, Jason got to a point where he was 'stuck in this crazy spot,' which he thought may have been the outer ridge of a coral reef, which kept him out of sight of his friends. 'I was really on the outer reef and they couldn't see me,' he said. 'I had my paddle and I was waving it and they couldn't see me, and the waves were so big.' The actor began to panic as he thought about his three-month-old daughter Lola, now 18, who he shares with ex-wife Lisa Bonet. The couple later welcomed so Nakoa-Wolf, 16. He said: 'I just lost it. I was like, "Oh s***."' Jason said he began to just drift in the water as he feared that he had been left behind by the rest of his group. He recalled: 'I was out there for a while, and I just couldn't see anyone coming to get me. I couldn't move anymore, and my arms and my legs gave up. My body stopped. Like I couldn't move my arms anymore, and I bubbled down. Then my toe hit the outer reef. He said: 'I literally gave up, and I'm screaming inside.' But he got the motivation to go on at the last possible moment when one of his friends spotted him and swam out toward him for support. 'I get back on the board and we start paddling,' he recalled, adding that it wasn't possible to just swim the shorter distance back to shore. 'He's like, "You got to go out," so we just keep paddling out.' Jason and his friend still had seven more miles to go on the journey, even as the 'brutal' waves battered them the whole way. By that point, the actor was bleeding profusely from cutting himself on the reef lurking just below the surface. 'My feet are covered in blood,' he recounted. 'And I'm just literally [with] my ancestors just paddling the rest of this way, head down and we get out.' New show: He can currently be seen on the nine-episode miniseries Chief Of War (pictured), which began airing on Apple TV+ on August 1

Everything we learned about Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce from podcast

Taylor Swift revealed she sent her mother to buy her master recordings, she bakes sourdough and has become an NFL superfan as she offered some intimate insights into her life and relationship with Travis Kelce during an appearance on his podcast. Swift appeared on New Heights, co-hosted by the NFL star and his older brother Jason Kelce, to reveal the title and release date of her new record The Life Of A Showgirl, which will launch on October 3. Advertisement She also revealed details about their romance, as well as her professional and personal life during the interview, which went on for more than two hours. Here is everything we learned: – Kelce wanted to date Swift… but did not actually take any steps to do so The couple famously got together after Kansas City Chiefs tight end Kelce announced on his podcast two years ago that he wanted to date Swift, after he failed to meet her when she performed at Arrowhead Stadium, the home of the Chiefs. Speaking on New Heights, Swift said she considered it to be 'a wild, romantic gesture' but joked he 'didn't do any proper logistical planning' to meet her at the Eras Tour show, such as get in touch with her management. Advertisement Taylor Swift performing on stage during the Eras Tour (Liam McBurney/PA) Instead, she revealed he thought his status on the team would allow him to go backstage to meet her. She said: 'Because he knows the elevator lady, he thought he could talk to her about just getting down to my dressing room. That's how it works in 1973!' – Swift thinks Kelce is a 'vibe booster' The pop star revealed some of the things she loves about her boyfriend, as she detailed their early meetings. She said: 'I knew he wasn't crazy the first couple of times we talked. He's truly getting to know me in a way that is very natural, very pure, very normal. Advertisement 'The way he could make me laugh so immediately about normal things. Travis is just a vibe booster in everyone's life that he's in. He's like a human exclamation point.' Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce (PA) She added she was touched that he so publicly declared his interest in her, saying: 'This felt more like I was in an '80s John Hughes movie and he was just standing outside of my window with a boombox being like, 'I want to date you! Do you want to go on a date with me? I made you a friendship bracelet'. 'I was like, if this guy isn't crazy, which is a big if, this is sort of what I've been writing songs about wanting to happen to me since I was a teenager.' – Swift knew nothing about the NFL but has since become a super-fan Swift revealed she had very little understanding of the NFL until she met Kelce, saying: 'You're so non-judgemental and you were so non-judgemental that I knew nothing about the world that you're in.' Advertisement She added: 'I didn't know what a tight end was.' Swift said she has learned about the NFL since dating Kelce (PA) However, she said she is now a super-fan who celebrates when players are sold to the Chiefs, adding: 'I'm not ready to be an analyst right now, but give me 16 months.' – Swift sent her mother and brother to negotiate the purchase of her masters Swift also discussed her purchase of her master recordings, which followed a long battle to gain control over her music. She explained on the podcast she had never initially owned her music, after signing with Big Machine when she was 15 gave them the rights. Advertisement In 2019, her first six albums were sold to talent manager Scooter Braun, much to her dismay, and were then sold in a deal with Shamrock Capital. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Taylor Swift (@taylorswift) In a bid to gain control over her catalogue after the sale to Braun, Swift began to re-record the albums as 'Taylor's Version', adding new tracks 'from the vault'. She eventually purchased the masters from the company in May. Discussing how it happened, she said: 'I'm in the business of human emotion, I would rather lead heart first. 'I wanted it because these are my handwritten diary entries from my whole life; these are the songs I wrote about every phase of my life. She added: 'So rather than send lawyers or management in a big crew, I sent my mom and my brother, who I work with, to LA.' She cried as she said: 'They sat down with Shamrock Capital and they told them what this meant for me, they told them the whole story of all the times we've tried to buy it, all the times it's fallen through.' She cried again as she recalled her mother telling her Shamrock had agreed to sell, revealing her mother told her: 'You got your music.' She added: 'I just, like, very dramatically hit the floor, for real. I started bawling my eyes out, just weeping.' She continued: 'This changed my life, I can't believe it still. This will affect the rest of my life. I think about it every day and instead of being an intrusive thought that hurts me, I can't believe this happened, how lucky am I?' – The couple don't pay attention to the public commentary on their relationship Kelce said he has learned 'how to be a pro' about handling public scrutiny of their relationship. He said: 'There's still some wacko theories from the beginning that I was like, oh no, how is she handling this? The last thing I wanted to do was screw this up.' Taylor Swift at the MTV Video Music Awards 2024 (Doug Peters/PA) Swift revealed: 'I don't see a lot of things. I've been in the music industry for 20 years. It's pretty hard to hurt my feelings at this point.' She added: 'It's at a point where my name can be in the actual headline and it can still be none of my business.' – Swift has a new interest in baking sourdough bread The singer joked she is 'thinking about bread about 60% of the time now,' as she revealed her latest passion. She said: 'I'd say all my hobbies could be categorised as hobbies you could have had in the 1700s. 'I like to sew, I specialise in children's purses and baby blankets. I love to paint. I love to cook.' She continued: 'I have a different baking obsession every six months. 'Right now, we're very deep in a sourdough obsession that has taken up my life.' She has even been baking for Jason Kelce's four daughters with wife Kylie Kelce, adding: 'There's one I've been workshopping for the girls because they love everything rainbow – funfetti sourdough, because they love sprinkles. 'We put sprinkles in everything when we hang out.'

Jennifer Aniston reveals which 'healing modalities' she has in her $21M mansion to 'calm her nerves'

has filled her home with 'healing modalities in order to create a calm environment,' the star has said. Those 'healing modalities' are crystals which she insisted banishes negative 'nerves' from her $21M mansion. The Friends actress, 56, opened the doors of her Los Angeles home to Vanity Fair, declaring it a sanctuary from the pressures of both Hollywood and the wider world. She said when told during the chat it exudes calmness: 'Good! That's the whole point.' Motioning towards the outside world, she added: 'Out there, it causes nerves. In here, there should be no nerves.' The actress' splashy abode was opened to Vanity Fair's Julie Miller, who took a detailed look inside the residence for the magazine's September cover story. Jennifer added: 'I've basically incorporated all of the healing modalities in order to create a calm environment in the chaos of the wonderful industry and the world at large.' The home features crystals including raw amethyst and a white stone for clarity, an incense holder decorated with crows, and a curated selection of design books. Designed by the architects A. Quincy Jones and Frederick Emmons, the house maintains a serene atmosphere through pale cream couches, white peonies and taper candles. Large panoramic windows take up an entire wall, offering sweeping views from Downtown L.A. to the Pacific Ocean, reinforcing the home's spa-like calm. The space notably lacks screens or ambient noise, enhancing its anxiety-suppressing effect. Jennifer also shared her passion for interior design, a hobby she shares with her longtime Friends co-star Courteney Cox, 59. She said: 'We usually talk interior design. Jennifer opened the doors to Architectural Digest in February 2018. She told the magazine that she'd 'want to be a designer' if she wasn't an actress because she loves 'the process' 'It kind of bores people to tears when we get into a room together. But it's what we love. It's our love language.' The actress described how she curates her life around architecture, animals, hair, and spiritual affirmations to find inspiration without being overwhelmed by online noise. She added: 'I try to stay away from the noise as much as possible. 'Thankfully, my algorithm is animals, architecture, hair and spiritual affirmations. So it's not that doomy.' Through the combination of intentional décor choices, panoramic views, and a carefully managed digital environment, Jennifer has fashioned a personal oasis where visitors can also experience a sense of calm, the Vanity Fair feature showed. Also in her interview Aniston said she is not a nepo baby. She was born to parents John Aniston and Nancy Dow, who were both actors, but she insists she has not benefitted from nepotism. In a new interview with Vanity Fair, the star denied riding her parents coattails to build her career. John, who died in 2022, was best known for his role as Victor Kiriakis on Days of Our Lives. And Nancy, who died in 2016, found success in the 60s on shows like The Beverly Hillbillies and The Wild Wild West. 'Listen, I am so grateful. I came from nothing. We were broke. There's no nepo baby here,' she declared. Jennifer was raised in New York City, where she developed her acting chops at the LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts. Part of her ambition stemmed from 'always wanting to get Pop's approval,' she said of her late father. 'It was the thing that drove me and was also my biggest heartbreak: trying to impress and prove your value to a man who's only capable of so much,' she explained. The Hollywood fixture said she thought that if she could achieve noteworthy success 'then he will love me as much as I love him.'
