Kaliningrad as a Strategic Flashpoint
General Christopher Donahue of the US Army Europe and Africa recently said NATO could seize Russia's Kaliningrad region quickly if conflict begins. Kaliningrad is surrounded by NATO members and separated from the rest of Russia. It holds military value and could be central in any confrontation.
Live Events
Russian commentators warn that the West is turning surrounding areas, such as Sweden's Gotland island, into military zones. These include air defense systems and missiles, seen as preparation for a ground offensive.
Klintsevich, a military analyst quoted in KP, claims NATO plans to cut off Kaliningrad by blocking air and sea routes. He predicts a military response through the Suwalki Gap, a 60-mile strip linking NATO nations that sits between Kaliningrad and Belarus.
Finland and the Arctic as New Hotspots
Experts cited in Russian media claim that Finland, which recently joined NATO, could become a new launch zone for Western attacks. They mention military infrastructure in Finland that could target St Petersburg and other Russian regions.
There is also a suggestion from analysts that Russia should conduct a nuclear weapons test in the Arctic to deter NATO aggression. This would be the first such test since the Cold War.

Moldova and NATO Presence
KP also names Moldova as another risk zone. Russia's SVR intelligence service has accused NATO of turning Moldova into a military base. This could create another direct confrontation between NATO and Russia in Eastern Europe.
Zimovsky, a military commentator, warned that any assault on St Petersburg, even if Kaliningrad is taken peacefully, would trigger a broader war.
Political Voices Promote World War 3 Narrative
Andrei Klintsevich and other experts featured in Russian media say the West is mobilising its defense industries and pushing for war. They accuse NATO of planning to break Russia into smaller regions to gain access to its resources.
Dmitry Medvedev, a top Russian official and former president, recently said that World War Three has already started. He blamed the US and Europe for provoking the conflict. He also called for Russian strikes on the West.
US and Ukrainian Response
The rise in rhetoric comes amid Russia's continued bombing of Ukraine. The US is backing Ukraine militarily. Donald Trump, a US presidential candidate, has reportedly promised Ukraine defense systems and 100% tariffs on Russia unless a peace agreement is made within 50 days.
Meanwhile, British documents obtained by The Sun reportedly describe London's plans in case of a nuclear attack. These documents give an idea of how seriously governments are considering worst-case scenarios.
FAQs
Why is Russia warning about a nuclear war now?
Russian media says NATO is preparing military zones near its borders, which they claim could provoke a future war.

Russia resumes Moscow-Pyongyang commercial flights

SOUTH KOREA: A Russian passenger jetlanded at North Korea's main airport Monday, a flight tracking site showed, completing the first commercial leg in decades between capitals of the allied countries. Russia and North Korea have pulled closer in the last year, with Pyongyang sending weapons and troops to aid Moscow's war in Ukraine -- likely in exchange for technical assistance, experts say. Tracking site Flight Aware showed Russia's Nordwind Airlines' Boeing 777 landing in Pyongyang at 09:15 am (GMT 00:15). "This is a historical event, strengthening the ties between our nations," Oleg, a Nordwind employee on the flight who did not give his full name, told AFP at the airport in Moscow Sunday. A video posted on Russian news agency RIA Novosti's Telegram account showed North Korean officials and flight attendants welcoming the Russian passengers with flowers at Pyongyang's international airport. One North Korean official is seen checking the temperatures of the disembarking Russians with an electronic thermometer.

Amid fears of Ukrainian drones, Putin cancels Russia's Navy Day parade for 1st time

Fearful of Ukrainian drones, which have struck deep inside Russia in recent months, Vladimir Putin cancelled the Navy Day parade in St Petersburg and instead attended watered down ceremonies. This was the first time he had to cancel the parade. read more Russian President Vladimir Putin, third from left, stands aboard the Raptor boat during his visit to St. Petersburg on Navy Day, Russia, on Sunday, July 27, 2025. (Alexei Danichev, Sputnik, Kremlin Pool Photo via AP) For the first time, Russian leader Vladimir Putin cancelled the Navy Day parade in his hometown of St Petersburg. The Navy Day is a Russian national holiday that celebrates the Russian Navy, which has suffered embarrassing defeats in the Black Sea in the war with Ukraine throughout the conflict, including the sinking of its Black Sea fleet's flagship Moskva. It is celebrated on the last Sunday of July, which fell on July 27 this year. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD The Kremlin confirmed that the Navy Day parade was cancelled 'on security grounds'. The cancellation comes amid fears in Russia about Ukraine's drone capabilities, which has been demonstrated in repeated strikes deep inside the country. Earlier in June, Ukraine struck multiple bases deep inside Russia and destroyed a third of Russian long-range bomber and surveillance fleets. Since then, Ukraine has also repeatedly struck Russia's weapons production, energy, and weapon storage sites with drones. Putin marks Navy Day with watered down ceremony While the main parade of warships was to be held in St Petersburg, smaller parades were also to be held in Kaliningrad region in the Baltic and Vladivostok in the far-east, according to the Associated Press. All of these parades were cancelled. After the parade's cancellation, Putin visited the navy headquarters in St Petersburg and reviewed the four-day 'July Storm' military exercise that involved more than 150 warships from the Baltics to the Pacific, as per the news agency. Putin also visited the Admiral Grigorovich frigate of the Baltic Fleet at the Kronstadt naval near St Petersburg and hailed its crew for fending off a Ukrainian drone attack in the region earlier in the day, the report said.

The burned structure housed classrooms for nursery, Class I, and Class II students. The incident has prompted police to launch an investigation. "The fire incident is shrouded in mystery. There were no eyewitnesses, and no call was made to the fire station at Aalo. One teacher who lives near the school was also unaware of the incident," West Siang Superintendent of Police Kardak Riba said. Police have registered a case under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act, utilizing technical evidence in their investigation. "I am deeply disturbed by the unfortunate incident at Lipu Bagra, where miscreants set fire to the Upper Primary School in the dead of night.
