Chinese Foreign Minister visits Afghanistan for 3-way talks on Pakistan economic corridor
It is Wang's first trip to the country since a surprise visit
March 2022
China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed he had arrived in Afghanistan on Wednesday. The ministry had earlier said he would travel to Pakistan later in the day for a three-day visit that will include talks with Ishaq Dar, Pakistan's Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister.
According to Geo News, a Pakistani media outlet, the Kabul meeting will focus on counterterrorism efforts and extending the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) – a project under China's flagship Belt and Road Initiative – to Afghanistan.
The three-way meeting takes place against the backdrop of intensive trade and security discussions between Kabul and Islamabad in recent months, signalling a warming of ties that were once shaped by concerns about terrorism.

China reveals past EV subsidies, from Tesla to state giants – where did the money go?
China has released a breakdown of the subsidy settlements for new-energy vehicle (NEV) companies from 2016 to 2020, along with the allocation plan for 2021 to 2022, and the data helps illustrate how the industry landscape shifted during those years. According to data released by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) earlier this month, over the seven years from 2016 to 2022, subsidies gradually moved from traditional state-owned enterprises to leading carmakers and emerging start-ups. A total of 1.65 billion yuan (US$230 million) in subsidies was disbursed between 2016 and 2020. The Beijing Electric Vehicle Co. emerged as the biggest winner, receiving about 556 million yuan, or a third of the total. Meanwhile, BYD received only 15.74 million yuan, and Tesla, which first applied for subsidies in 2020, received 3.59 million yuan – each sum accounted for less than 1 per cent of the total. The MIIT explained that several carmakers received less than their requested amounts due to non-compliant documentation or failure to upload required vehicle data. The subsidy plans for 2023-2024 have yet to be publicised. From 2021 to 2022, a clear shift in subsidy distribution began to emerge. BYD's Shaanxi and Shenzhen subsidiaries were allocated 37.91 million yuan and 35.56 million yuan, respectively, while Tesla's Shanghai subsidiary received 30.15 million yuan. Stellantis-backed electric vehicle (EV) maker Leapmotor was the only start-up to receive subsidies, totalling 2.76 million yuan. The data shows how subsidies increasingly favoured leading carmakers and select new entrants, signalling a transition from state-owned dominance to a more diversified market, said Zhou Lijun, director and chief researcher of auto industry analysis firm Yiche Research. Authorities will dynamically adjust NEV subsidy policies, with subsidies expected to gradually decrease, according to Zhou.

Lowrys Farm owner, My Jewelry slammed as 138,000 Hongkongers hit in data leaks
Hong Kong's privacy watchdog has ruled that three retailers, including the local branch of a Japanese multinational company that owns fashion brands Lowrys Farm and 'Niko and…', have violated data protection rules in two cybersecurity breaches that compromised the private information of more than 138,000 people. Advertisement Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data Ada Chung Lai-ling said investigations by her office discovered that Adastria had failed to activate any security measures provided by its software supplier and uncovered a lack of cybersecurity protection and audits by the local retailer Kwong's Art Jewellery and its subsidiary, My Jewelry. 'In the face of escalating cybersecurity threats, organisations should recognise that the personal data in their possession is a valuable asset and allocate sufficient resources to cybersecurity and data security to safeguard the personal data in their possession,' she said. On Thursday, Chung's office published reports on two data breaches flagged by the three businesses last November. The watchdog said that all three companies had failed to take all practicable steps to protect the stored personal data against unauthorised or accidental access, processing, erasure, loss or use. Advertisement The leak at Art Jewellery and My Jewelry affected more than 75,000 customers and about 4,400 former and current employees. The breach at Adastria impacted around 59,205 local customers.
