Doctor who works at VA Medical Center in Mass. indicted on child porn charges, US Attorney says
Sven Knudsen Ljaamo, 70, was indicted on one count of receipt of child pornography and one count of possession of child pornography, U.S. Attorney Leah Foley said in a statement.
Ljaamo was arrested and charged by criminal complaint on April 23. He was subsequently released on conditions after a detention hearing.
Prosecutors allege that more than 100 graphic files that included photographs and videos of child pornography were uploaded to Ljaamo's Google account, according to the criminal complaint filed in federal court on April 22.
Federal investigators seized more than 20 devices after obtaining a search warrant.
'Because of the volume of images, forensic analysis of all devices, including the devices described above, is ongoing,' the criminal complaint states.
The complaint details graphic and disturbing images and pornographic videos depicting young girls being raped and sexually abused.
In one image allegedly uploaded to Ljaamo's Google account, a naked man appears to be raping a girl believed to be between 5 and 8 years old, according to the criminal complaint.
In another 37-second video uploaded to the account, a man is raping a girl believed to be between 9 to 13 years old, the complaint alleges.
Federal investigators learned of the images and videos when Google submitted a Missing and Exploited Children CyberTip Report to Billerica Police, the complaint states.
Google reported that the name provided by the user of the Google account was 'Sven Ljaamo.' Google reported that between May 8, 2024 and Sept. 10, 2024, the account had uploaded 108 files of suspected child pornography to Google Drive and Google Photos.
When Ljaamo spoke to investigators, he allegedly admitted to viewing, downloading and saving the pornographic material involving female minors, Foley said.
Ljaamo, in a written statement, confirmed that he 'bookmarked and accessed' several websites containing child pornography involving young children and specifically sites depicting 'young girls engaged in sexual acts,' investigators wrote in the criminal complaint.
Specifically, in addition to other information, Ljaamo told investigators that 'that he has created folders titled 'Y,' and that 'Y' stands for 'young,'' the criminal complaint states.
Investigators later seized Ljaamo's cell phone and laptop from his home, and another cell phone from his office at the VA Medical Center.
'On the laptop, inside the 'Y' folder, investigators found tens of thousands of pornographic and/or erotic images and videos,' the criminal complaint states.

If convicted of the charge of receipt of child pornography, Ljaamo faces a sentence of up to 20 years in prison, at least five years and up to a lifetime of supervised release and a fine of up to $250,000.

Google has already admitted that it is under attack from hackers thought to be part of the ShinyHunters extortion group, confirming a data breach that followed a successful compromise of a Google Salesforce database. Users of Google Cloud do not escape the security warnings either, with an advisory posting providing details of an attack path using what are known as dangling buckets to steal data and distribute malware. Gmail users cannot relax either, as they are also firmly in the hacker crosshairs. This triad of cybersecurity incidents is completed as Gmail users take to online support forums to report a wave of new attacks. This time, the attackers are adopting a hybrid approach that includes phone calls and email messages, all purporting to be from official Google support staff. As convincing as they are dangerous, here's what 2.5 billion Gmail users need to know and do about the security scams. Gmail Security Alert For All 2.5 Billion Users With an estimated 2.5 billion users, or around 30% of the world's total population, it's hardly surprising that cybercriminals are interested in hacking Gmail. After all, your email is a treasure trove of useful data that can be employed in further attacks. All email platforms are vulnerable to hacking, but Gmail, like Microsoft Windows, stands out due to its massive user base. The latest round of attack warnings comes courtesy of postings to the Gmail subreddit, which describe in detail how scammers are impersonating Google in attempts to initiate an account password reset and take over your email inbox. I have reported on such attacks before, and the recent spike appears to follow the same methodology. The victims first receive a phone call from someone claiming to be from Google support, warning them that an unknown party has attempted to hack their Google account. The con itself is a simple one: that password reset email to your Gmail account includes a security verification code to prove it's you trying to change the password. The attacker encourages the victim to read the code out over the telephone so that 'Google support' can reset the victim's account and protect them from the consequences of the 'ongoing attack.' Of course, all they are really doing is hacking your account in real time, while on the phone with you. Google itself has said that the number of password-stealing threats delivered by email increased by 84% last year, a trend that it confirmed has 'only intensified in 2025.' 'We encourage all users to remain vigilant,' a Google spokesperson said, 'please reiterate to your readers that Google will not call you to reset your password or troubleshoot account issues.' Mitigating The Latest Gmail Account Attacks Google has published a helpful guide with advice on how to tell if a Google security alert is genuine, but users are also advised to implement the following three account attack mitigation steps as a matter of some urgency. The Google Security Checkup is, in my never humble opinion, the most efficient and effective way to ensure that the right security protections are in place to defend your account. It does this by checking what you have activated, and advising about issues that could leave you at risk. It is a fully automatic process, at least as far as checking your account is concerned, but you will need to follow the provided links to change settings as recommended. Google's Advanced Protection Program ensures that additional checks are made to help prevent even the most determined hackers from gaining access to your Gmail account. Checks such as blocking potential harmful downloads, restricting non-Google apps from accessing data from your Gmail account, and imposing additional steps into the account recovery process to prevent sophisticated attackers to stop hackers taking control. And finally, using a Google passkey really can stop most account takeover attacks stone dead. 'Google research has shown that security keys provide a stronger protection against automated bots, bulk phishing attacks, and targeted attacks than SMS, app-based one-time passwords, and other forms of traditional two-factor authentication,' Google's Gmail spokesperson, Ross Richendrfer, told me.

AI summaries can downplay medical issues for female patients, UK research finds
The latest example of bias permeating artificial intelligence comes from the medical field. A new study surveyed real case notes from 617 adult social care workers in the UK and found that when large language models summarized the notes, they were more likely to omit language such as "disabled," "unable" or "complex" when the patient was tagged as female, which could lead to women receiving insufficient or inaccurate medical care. Research led by the London School of Economics and Political Science ran the same case notes through two LLMs — Meta's Llama 3 and Google's Gemma — and swapped the patient's gender, and the AI tools often provided two very different patient snapshots. While Llama 3 showed no gender-based differences across the surveyed metrics, Gemma had significant examples of this bias. Google's AI summaries produced disparities as drastic as "Mr Smith is an 84-year-old man who lives alone and has a complex medical history, no care package and poor mobility" for a male patient, while the same case notes with credited to a female patient provided: "Mrs Smith is an 84-year-old living alone. Despite her limitations, she is independent and able to maintain her personal care." Recent research has uncovered biases against women in the medical sector, both in clinical research and in patient diagnosis . The stats also trend worse for racial and ethnic minorities and for the LGBTQ community . It's the latest stark reminder that LLMs are only as good as the information they are trained on and the people deciding how they are trained . The particularly concerning takeaway from this research was that UK authorities have been using LLMs in care practices, but without always detailing which models are being introduced or in what capacity. "We know these models are being used very widely and what's concerning is that we found very meaningful differences between measures of bias in different models,' lead author Dr. Sam Rickman said, noting that the Google model was particularly likely to dismiss mental and physical health issues for women. "Because the amount of care you get is determined on the basis of perceived need, this could result in women receiving less care if biased models are used in practice. But we don't actually know which models are being used at the moment."
