Doctor who works at VA Medical Center in Mass. indicted on child porn charges, US Attorney says
A physician employed at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Bedford has been indicted on child pornography charges, the U.S. Attorney said Thursday.
Sven Knudsen Ljaamo, 70, was indicted on one count of receipt of child pornography and one count of possession of child pornography, U.S. Attorney Leah Foley said in a statement.
Ljaamo was arrested and charged by criminal complaint on April 23. He was subsequently released on conditions after a detention hearing.
Prosecutors allege that more than 100 graphic files that included photographs and videos of child pornography were uploaded to Ljaamo's Google account, according to the criminal complaint filed in federal court on April 22.
Federal investigators seized more than 20 devices after obtaining a search warrant.
'Because of the volume of images, forensic analysis of all devices, including the devices described above, is ongoing,' the criminal complaint states.
The complaint details graphic and disturbing images and pornographic videos depicting young girls being raped and sexually abused.
In one image allegedly uploaded to Ljaamo's Google account, a naked man appears to be raping a girl believed to be between 5 and 8 years old, according to the criminal complaint.
In another 37-second video uploaded to the account, a man is raping a girl believed to be between 9 to 13 years old, the complaint alleges.
Federal investigators learned of the images and videos when Google submitted a Missing and Exploited Children CyberTip Report to Billerica Police, the complaint states.
Google reported that the name provided by the user of the Google account was 'Sven Ljaamo.' Google reported that between May 8, 2024 and Sept. 10, 2024, the account had uploaded 108 files of suspected child pornography to Google Drive and Google Photos.
When Ljaamo spoke to investigators, he allegedly admitted to viewing, downloading and saving the pornographic material involving female minors, Foley said.
Ljaamo, in a written statement, confirmed that he 'bookmarked and accessed' several websites containing child pornography involving young children and specifically sites depicting 'young girls engaged in sexual acts,' investigators wrote in the criminal complaint.
Specifically, in addition to other information, Ljaamo told investigators that 'that he has created folders titled 'Y,' and that 'Y' stands for 'young,'' the criminal complaint states.
Investigators later seized Ljaamo's cell phone and laptop from his home, and another cell phone from his office at the VA Medical Center.
'On the laptop, inside the 'Y' folder, investigators found tens of thousands of pornographic and/or erotic images and videos,' the criminal complaint states.

If convicted of the charge of receipt of child pornography, Ljaamo faces a sentence of up to 20 years in prison, at least five years and up to a lifetime of supervised release and a fine of up to $250,000.

What we know A deputy U.S. Marshal with the Pacific Northwest Violent Offender Task Force, revealed in a US Marshals Service affidavit that Decker's Google account included searches such as "how does a person move to Canada," "how to relocate to Canada," and "jobs Canada." These searches were conducted on May 26, shortly before Decker allegedly kidnapped and murdered his three children, Olivia, 5, Evelyn, 8, and Paityn, 9. Decker's children were found dead on U.S. Forest Service land near Leavenworth on June 2. His vehicle was found at the scene, but Decker remains at large. US Marshals are concerned that Decker may be attempting to cross the border into Canada. "The location of the victim's remains is relatively close to the Canadian border and approximately 11 miles from the Pacific Crest Trail, a well-established trail that leads directly Canada," the affidavit read. The Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) is a challenging 2,650-mile hiking and equestrian trail spanning from Mexico to Canada through California, Oregon and Washington, primarily following the Sierra Nevada and Cascade mountain ranges. The trail offers scenic diversity, from deserts to glaciated peaks, and is designated as a National Scenic Trail for its natural, historic and cultural significance. The most important aspect of the PCT lies in its ability to connect individuals with the beauty and demanding wilderness of the Western United States, whether experienced through a full thru-hike or shorter section adventures. Dig deeper Decker, a former military member, possesses skills in navigation and survival, which could aid him in evading capture. The arrest warrant for Decker signed on June 3, accuses him of three counts of aggravated murder in the first degree and three counts of kidnapping in the first degree. The warrant is nationwide and stipulates "no bail until first appearance." The charges against Decker are serious felonies that carry significant prison sentences if convicted. Northern leopard frog listed as endangered in NWT
Northern leopard frogs are now listed as endangered in the Northwest Territories after the NWT Species at Risk Committee re-assessed the status of two amphibious Northerners. An updated assessment was released May 30. Also re-assessed as still threatened was the Western Toad. 'Unlike some species of frogs, northern leopard frogs cannot survive if they freeze and cannot hibernate in the NWT,' explains the assessment. 'Northern leopard frogs are therefore limited to only the very southern NWT where suitable overwintering sites exist. 'Threats to this species include disease, habitat loss from drought and wildfire, and human disturbances such as hydro development and road mortality.' Across Canada, the frog is listed as special concern. Globally, the species is considered least concern. However, the leopard frogs in the NWT are a distinct population, according to a 2024 study ans they are geographically isolated from other leopard frogs across the continent. '(The) Northern leopard frog is a slender, medium-sized green-brown frog with oval-shaped spots on the back that are bordered with light halos similar to a leopard,' adds the report. 'Two cream-coloured ridges extend the length of the back. 'Northern leopard frogs are uncommon in the NWT, and have only been found near the Slave, Taltson and Tazin rivers in the southern NWT.' To counter the decline in population, the assessment recommends further gathering of traditional knowledge of breeding sites, population trends and their habitat. The report notes there are large gaps in knowledge of where the frogs are. Once known breeding sites and critical habitat are identified, they can be protected from development. Forest fire smoke causes air quality to remain at ‘high risk' in Hamilton area
Smoke from forest fires as far away as northwestern Ontario and the prairies are continuing to cause poor air quality for Hamilton residents Friday, with air quality listed at high risk Friday afternoon. Air quality is expected to remain high risk into Friday evening. The forecast for Saturday morning's air quality is low risk. Environment Canada issued a special air quality statement for much of southern Ontario, including Hamilton, warning 'wildfire smoke' is expected to cause reduced visibility and poor air quality that could have consequences for your health. 'As smoke levels increase, health risks increase,' noted the agency in a release that encourages people to limit their time outdoors and reschedule outdoor sports or events. Major forest fires have been burning for weeks in British Columbia, Manitoba, Saskatchewan and northwestern Ontario, in some cases resulting in deaths and mass evacuations from fire-threatened communities. Until now, the only noticeable impact in the Hamilton area was a hazy, vividly red sun , because the high-flying pollution was not making its way to ground level. But the Air Quality Health Index for Hamilton, available online , forecast a jump in air pollution starting Thursday from the 'moderate' to 'high' risk level. Environment Canada attributes that expected jump to wildfire smoke, which has travelled from Western Canada to Ontario, parts of the U.S. and even Europe. Similar Hamilton health warnings went out in June of 2023 during major forest fires in Quebec . For at-risk populations, including those with breathing or heart problems, experts recommend rescheduling strenuous activities outside. Children and seniors are also advised to take it easy. For the general population, the advice is to consider reducing outdoor activities if you experience symptoms like coughing or throat irritation.
