Sports meets fashion: Time to take cues from Wimbledon, golf, F1 and pickleball
Fashion has always drawn cues from art, music, poetry, and sports. With the US Open (Golf) wrapping up last month and Wimbledon and Formula 1 underway, the overlap between athletics and aesthetics is dominating global conversations once again. From preppy courtside looks to flashy F1-themed manicures, fashion's biggest trends are emerging from the field. St. John's new line of golf wear, F1-themed nails with track lines, chrome finishes, and team logos, and Neena Gupta promoting her new web series in a pickleball-style outfit.(Photos: Instagram) Serving preppy style This year, Wimbledon spectators are embracing the preppy aesthetic. Think gingham and checkered patterns, pleated skirts, and tailored blazers. 'Global events like F1 and Wimbledon turned into runways of their own,' says stylist Namita Alexander, adding, 'It's not just about performance, but presence. Celebrities are blending athleisure with high fashion, embracing sporty silhouettes, technical fabrics, and iconic teamwear to craft looks that both are bold and wearable.' On court chic Despite Wimbledon's strict all-white dress code, players have been making subtle fashion statements. American player Coco Gauff wore a lace tank top adorned with 3D butterfly embellishments. Italian player Lorenzo Musetti donned a textured leather jacket for his pre-match walk-on. Experts believe that these trends will blow up soon. 'Sports and fashion go hand-in-hand, and this year is particularly inspiring,' says designer Payal Jain, who grew up watching tennis, adding, 'If I'm working on a sport-oriented collection, I revisit icons like Steffi Graf, Maria Sharapova, and Andre Agassi, and draw from their language for I'm creating.' Golf goes glam Once heavily male-coded, golf wear is getting a feminine spin. With women now accounting for over 25% of golfers and contributing to 60% of the sport's post-pandemic growth, as per the US National Golf Foundation, fashion brands are taking note. St. John's new collection includes textured knit polos, Serena-style skirts, tweed bags, and open-knit jackets, blending performance with polish. Nailing the top gear The high-speed world of Formula 1 has hit the beauty world with F1-themed nails gaining traction. Track lines, flame motifs, and chrome finishes are dominating nail salons and Instagram alike, with #f1nails clocking nearly 500k views. 'Trends like F1 nails and tennis bracelets are just examples of how deep the influence of fashion and sports runs. Even sports uniforms have become more stylish,' says designer Pratyush Kumar, adding, 'From motor racing to fencing, we study functional details and merge them with craft.' Pickleball meets pop Once a quiet paddle sport, pickleball has become a social media sensation. With pop icons like Taylor Swift and the Kardashians joining the craze, its style code — comfort-first and playful — is trending. And Indian brands are not far behind. Labels like FirstEdge Sports, Terra Luna, and NOYO are embracing the wave, launching relaxed silhouettes like V-neck T-shirts, pleated skirts, sweat vests, and classic sneakers recently. Catching up on the trend, actor Neena Gupta also sported a pickleball-inspired outfit featuring a pleated skirt, sweater vest, shirt, socks, and sneakers while promoting her upcoming series recently.

The inaugural Neeraj Chopra Classic 2025 at the Sri Kanteerava stadium in Bengaluru on 5 July was a watershed moment for Indian athletics in many ways. The one-day javelin throw event, named after the two-time Olympic medallist and co-organiser Neeraj, witnessed a massive outpouring of love from locals as 14,593 fans turned up to the stadium – an unbelievable statistic for an athletics event in the country. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD They were greeted by some thrilling javelin throw action as 2023 world champion, Neeraj clinched the top spot with a strong 86.18m throw in difficult windy conditions. Rohler, Yego praise Neeraj Chopra Classic 2025 That, however, didn't spoil his mood as he was happy to see thousands of fans on the ground. 'I think we all need to be thankful for the work and the power that Neeraj put into this event. We've seen how much joy all these people had in the stadium,' Rohler, who has struggled with back injuries over the years, said. 'I mean, we were seeing one event today, not the whole track and field, just javelin. And there were almost 15,000 people coming to cheer for sticks flying far. That is a beautiful thing.' Asked about what would be his recommendation regarding the event to other European athletes, Rohler said: 'The experience was very good. I think that the competition, the friendship that we had, we sat together, Olympic champions at one table, had Indian food together. It was just the overall experience. Thank you guys.' Thomas Rohler praised Neeraj Chopra for making the event possible. Image: Reuters Yego, silver medallist in the 2016 Summer Games, felt that after a successful start, more events could be added to the NC Classic in the next edition. 'The organisation was really nice. I enjoyed every bit of this competition. The accommodation, the hotel, everything was really nice, you know, the security. Maybe next year if possible we can have maybe two events or three events. It's fine because I've seen India doing so many in the long jump, in the triple jump. So we can have the same events going at the same time,' Yego, known as 'Mr YouTube' for learning the sport by watching videos, said. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD 'I've enjoyed it, I love the fans. Every other time on my Instagram I get a lot of messages from the Indians. They really cheer me and sometimes I tell them, you have your own champion who is doing so well and I say, yeah, we want you to push him and today I tried to push him.'

'Resigned In April, But AIFF Asked Me To Stay Till June': Manolo Marquez Reveals Reasons Behind Departure
Last Updated: Former India football coach Manolo Marquez resigned in April, but the AIFF convinced him to stay until June. He led India in eight matches with only one win. Former India men's football head coach Manolo Marquez has revealed that he initially submitted his resignation in April, but the All India Football Federation (AIFF) persuaded him to extend his tenure for a few more months. The Spaniard took over the national team following the abrupt departure of Igor Stimac in early 2024. Marquez led India in eight matches during his brief stint, managing only one victory—a 3-0 win over the Maldives in a friendly encounter. His tenure came to an abrupt end after the AIFF Executive Committee, during its meeting in the national capital, agreed to relieve Marquez, despite having a year left in his contract. But, it has now been revealed by Marquez himself, that he desired to leave much earlier. 'I resigned in April, but they asked me to do it in the June window. They tried to convince me for a month to continue at the head of the Indian national team," Marquez said in an interview with Spanish outlet Marca. Marquez's exit came after India's underwhelming start to the AFC Asian Cup Qualifiers. The Blue Tigers were held to a draw against Bangladesh in their opening game and suffered a last-minute 0-1 defeat to Hong Kong, thereby putting both the coach and the team under immense scrutiny. Despite the disappointing outcomes, Marquez emphasized that the poor results weren't the sole reason for his departure. 'I didn't want to leave because of the bad results. In fact, they tried to convince me for a month to continue. It seems that they have now accepted my initial decision," he added. 'Coaching the Indian national team was the dream of my life. But when you see that all teams do not play by the same rules, you feel that this is not your place." 'I admit that I have done things wrong, but if the results had improved, I would probably still be in office," he explained. Marquez first arrived in India ahead of the 2020–21 Indian Super League (ISL) season to take charge of Hyderabad FC, and under his leadership, they clinched the ISL title in 2022. Following his success with Hyderabad, Marquez took over as head coach of FC Goa, eventually leading them to a Super Cup, while also managing the national side in a dual role since early 2024.
