Jammu and Kashmir: Border residents still sceptical about US-brokered ceasefire

Hindustan Times13-05-2025

'What Pakistan did to us was unimaginable...' said Vinod Kumar, 51, of Poonch, calling Pakistani shelling from May 7 to 10 a 'living hell'.
People living close to the Line of Control (LoC) and in Poonch and Rajouri towns, have begin their journey home but are still sceptical about US brokered ceasefire.
'I returned yesterday to my home with my family from Jammu but majority of the Hindus have not returned yet,' Vinod Kumar added.
Kumar said, following intense shelling by Pakistan, people from Poonch town had fled to Jammu. 'Since I have an underground bunker in my house, I along with my family shift in it during night because we still feel uncertain about US brokered ceasefire,' he added.
Kumar, a teacher by profession, had fled to Jammu on May 8. 'My house has been left pock-marked by Pak shelling. Window panes and doors have been shattered,' he said.
Jamrodh Singh, nephew of Amrik Singh, who was killed in Pak shelling, said, 'My uncle died before us. We are still not able to cope up with the harsh reality that we have lost him. Who will look after his daughter and son.'
Singh said, 'The government had declared mock drill for May 7 but launched strikes in the night. No sirens rang ...no information was given to the people to take precautionary measures. At least people in border areas should have been alerted.' He demanded that a government job and adequate compensation be given to his uncle's family.
Another resident of Poonch town, Krishan Singh said that people still lived in fear. 'People in the town are observing self imposed blackouts,' he said.
'In the night, we take all possible precautions. Poonch town wears deserted look in the evening. There is self-imposed blackout. Shops shut early and traffic goes off road,' he said.
He informed that people, who have single storey house were spending nights with neighbours having double storied houses.
In Rajouri, situation is not different. 'Very few people have come back to Rajouri town and those who lives in villages along the LoC aren't spending nights in their houses,' said Mohammad Wasim.
'Since Pakistan rained mortar shells in the past four days and they can't be trusted, we tend to our cattle and do other domestic chores during the day before falling back to a relative's house in the evening,' he added.
Fear is still there, can't trust Pak
In Mendhar town, Bhupinder Singh said, 'While Hindus have not returned to the town, Muslims, who hailed from far off villages have fallen back.'
Singh had to take his 75-year-old bed-ridden mother to Jammu for her medical treatment. 'I had to take my mother to GMC Jammu. She has multiple health issues. Since situation has started de-escalating, I may take her to Jammu tomorrow,' he said.
However, Ashok Kumar of Khour, who returned home on Sunday, was shocked to see all his cattle lying dead.
'What sort of ceasefire agreement was it. These Pakistanis can never be trusted. I have lost three buffaloes in Pak firing and my house has been substantially damaged,' he said.
The fear can be witnessed on the international border as well.
'We have returned to our house in Abdullian and have started our normal life but a sense of fear keeps lurking us,' said Sunita Devi of Abdullian.

'Don't Equate Terrorists With Victims': Jaishankar's Stern Message, India Slams Terror Sympathy

In a powerful diplomatic moment, US Congressman Brad Sherman directly confronted a Pakistani delegation led by Bilawal Bhutto Zardari during their visit to Washington, DC. Sherman demanded action against the Pakistan-based terror group Jaish-e-Mohammed, which was responsible for the 2002 murder of American journalist Daniel Pearl. He also called on Pakistan to release Dr. Shakil Afridi, the doctor who helped the US locate Osama bin Laden. Additionally, Sherman urged Pakistan to ensure religious freedom for Hindus, Christians, and Ahmadiyya Muslims. This high-level meeting took place alongside the Indian parliamentary delegation visit, where Shashi Tharoor and others briefed US officials on Operation Sindoor and India's counter-terror strategy post the Pahalgam terror attack.

India receives request from China's staunch enemy for D4 anti-drone system, not US, Vietnam, Philippines, Indonesia, it is...

New Delhi: Taiwan has officially asked India for the weapons with which India had destroyed Pakistani drones during Operation Sindoor. Taiwan has sent a request to buy the D4 anti-drone system developed by India's DRDO and Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL). China is bound to get angry at this request of Taiwan because China does not want any country to help Taiwan. But the way China is giving defense packages and modern weapon systems to Pakistan, experts say that India should also hand over similar weapons to Taiwan. The D4 anti-drone system has been developed by India's DRDO and manufactured by Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL). The power of the D4 anti-drone system was seen during Operation Sindoor, when Pakistan attacked India with about 300 to 400 drones made by Turkey and China. During this time, India shot down all the drones in the air itself. India also shot down Turkey's Bayraktar TB-2 drone. This revealed the strength of India's advanced soft kill jamming and hard kill laser capability which stunned the world. D4, i.e. Detect, Deter, Destroy, Defend, is an integrated anti-drone system developed jointly by India's DRDO and BEL (Bharat Electronics Limited). This system works at 4 levels. Detect: Accurately detects the presence of drones with multi-frequency radar and EO/IR sensor. Deter: It can deviate enemy drones from the mission through signal jamming and GPS spoofing. Destroy: Drones armed with laser-based hard-kill technology and RF jammers in the system can be destroyed in the air itself. Defend: Ensures the protection of sensitive areas from any remaining drone or swarm attack. China considers Taiwan as its part and has clearly stated that it does not mind using force to merge Taiwan with China. In the last few years, China has increased its military exercises and drone surveillance in the Taiwan Strait. Since 2024, the PLA has doubled the number of surveillance and attack drones near the Taiwan border. In such a situation, there is a great need for a first-rate anti-drone system for Taiwan.

Eid prayers not allowed at Srinagar's Jama Masjid, Mirwaiz alleges house arrest

For the seventh year in a row, the authorities in Srinagar did not allow Eid-ul-Adha prayers at the historic Eidgah ground and Jamia Masjid in the old city on Saturday and placed Kashmir's leading cleric Mirwaiz Umar Farooq under house arrest. The gates of Jamia Masjid were locked early in the morning, and police were deployed outside to prevent entry. 'Anjuman Auqaf Jama Masjid, Srinagar, deeply regrets to inform that the authorities have once again disallowed Eid-ul-Adha prayers at the Eidgah as well as at the historic Jama Masjid in by closing the gates of the mosque and deploying police personnel outside,' the management of the historic mosque said in a statement. It said the authorities did not even permit the pre-dawn (Fajr) prayers. Mirwaiz Umar Farooq condemned the move and posted on X: 'Eid Mubarak! Yet again, Kashmir wakes up to the sad reality: no Eid prayers at Eidgah, and Jama Masjid locked down for the 7th straight year. I too have been detained at my home.' 'In a Muslim-majority region, Muslims are deprived of their fundamental right to pray -- even on their most important religious occasion celebrated across the world!' he said. 'What a shame on those who rule over us, and on those elected by the people who choose to remain silent as our rights are trampled over, again and again,' Mirwaiz said on X. After offering namaz at Hazratbal dargah on the outskirts of Srinagar, chief minister Omar Abdullah said, 'While we are celebrating Eid, unfortunately, once again, permission was denied to offer namaz in Srinagar's iconic Jama Masjid. I don't know the basis of these decisions, but we need to learn to trust our people. These are the same people who came out to protest against the Pahalgam terrorist attack. The government should think about allowing namaz at the historic Jama Masjid.' Reacting to the developments, PDP leader Iltija Mufti said: 'I want to ask the National Conference government and the lieutenant governor (Manoj Sinha) why the Mirwaiz is still being placed under house arrest when you claim everything is normal. As India's only and the largest Muslim majority state, we Kashmiris have the right to worship... More than infrastructure, we need dignity and security of life.' PDP chief and former chief minister Mehbooba Mufti said: 'Unfortunately, the government, on this pious day, has denied permission to offer namaz in the Jama Masjid, and Mirwaiz Umar Farooq has been put under house arrest... I protest against the state government also, which is just watching everything and doing nothing.'
