Mullins reflects on 'tough' few weeks after being crowned UK champion trainer

Willie Mullins has revealed his battle with Dan Skelton to be crowned champion trainer in the UK has been "tough mentally".
The Closutton handler edged out Skelton after a fantastic afternoon at Sandown on Saturday as wins for Gaelic Warrior and Il Etait Temps put him within touching distance of securing the title before he had the second, third, fourth and fifth-placed horses behind Resplendent Grey in the bet365 Gold Cup Handicap Chase with Lombron, High Class Hero, Spanish Harlem and Grangeclare West respectively.
The past few weeks have seen Mullins send horses to multiple courses up and down the UK and he admits is has been tough going.
'The last few weeks have been tough and they must have been tough for Dan too," said Mullins. "That's the way things go.
'I am very happy for all our connections and owners who once again have supported us with their horses.
'I am very happy to have won the title for the second time this year but I am not making any predictions for next season and we still have a week of the season to go in Ireland. I am going home now to get ready for next week.
'As I said last week, it feels special to do something similar to what Vincent O'Brien did but of course he then and went and also did it on the Flat which I won't be doing!
'I am very happy doing what I'm doing and am very happy for the owners, staff and the home team, starting with Jackie my wife.
'It's been tough mentally and I haven't read the papers for the last four days with so much going on or watched RacingTV. I was reading more about other sports because there was so much going on in racing I tried to keep away from it all. Otherwise, you couldn't get through it and I'm sure Dan was the same.
'The press and TV make it all so public and it has been great publicity for the sport going down to the last day.'

‘Fairly surreal' – Irish racing festival sees dad and daughter jockeys compete against one another

Patrick Breen hadn't raced in 23 years and lost a considerable amount of weight to compete against his daughter FAMILY AFFAIR 'Fairly surreal' – Irish racing festival sees dad and daughter jockeys compete against one another PATRICK Breen and his daughter Sarah raced against each other at Tramore's August Festival. The festival served as great entertainment for the 26,000 people who attended over the four days, but one race in particular caught the eye of many horse racing fans. 4 The pair were still friends after the race Credit: @hriracing 4 Patrick didn't look like a jockey who'd been off the saddle for 23 years Credit: @hriracing 4 Sarah has learned a thing or two from her father when it comes to horse racing Credit: @hriracing 4 The father and daughter often ride together on the beach Credit: @hriracing In the closing Majestic Hotel Flat Race on the Friday, Sarah and Patrick raced against each other on two horses trained by the family. Both horses went into the race at the same odds of 28/1, but it was Patrick who got the family bragging rights with a third place finish on Lord Lackendarra. Patrick was confident he would get the better of his his daughter before the race when he was speaking to RacingTV. He had said: "This is Sarah and she is not as good as her father, but she's working on it. Eventually when I retire I hope she is as good as me." Sarah finished in a respectable sixth place aboard Goodmancon as she enjoyed the rare spectacle. The 18-year-old spoke to Horse Racing Ireland this week, reflecting: 'It was fairly cool when we pulled up, I knew turning up the straight that I wasn't going to beat him this time. 'He was fairly happy, and I was as happy as I could be seeing as he finished in front of me! It was fairly surreal pulling into the parade ring together." Patrick is a jockey and horse trainer from Waterford. Having broken his neck aged 29, he had to put his jockey career on the back burner. He hadn't raced in 23 years before competing in Wexford last month in preparation for this dream race. It was his goal to race against his daughter and his inspiration for returning to the saddle. Teen Irish jockey Jamie Martin gives joyful interview after winning his debut race Sarah said: 'That was always dad's goal, he wanted to ride against me, so it was always the plan to ride against each other when he took out the license. 'I didn't see it any different until we weighed out. We ride out together every day. I didn't take any notice of him until we were both in the same colours, then it dawned on me that we were racing against each other in an actual race. 'We are fairly competitive at home, so it was a bit annoying now that he finished in front of me, but I'll definitely get him the next day. He's been soaking it up - I didn't hear the end of it on the way home!' Patrick had to dust off his silks as well as lose three stone to reach an appropriate weight to ride Lord Lackendarra. The pair are not the first father-daughter duo to race against each other, as Willie and Rosemary Rooney have also been in the same boat. While the feet had been a goal of Patrick's for some time, his daughter never fully believed it would happen. Sarah added: 'I didn't really think it was going to happen, I thought it was an unrealistic goal but when we found a race in Tramore we thought it would be ideal. "Both horses had course form and it's our local track. We said it would be best to go there. "He had to do a lot of work to get back riding. He put in a lot of work at home as well as getting the horses ready. Getting both horses ready for the same race is not that easy.'

Bookies happy to lay Aidan O'Brien favourite as horse smashed in betting at York

Betting firms are happy to lay Lambourn in the Great Voltigeur Stakes at York on Wednesday, with the English and Irish Derby winner now 10/11 to win, having been much shorter odds. Aidan O'Brien reports that that the Group 2 is being used as 'a race on the way to another race' for the three-year-old, with the St Leger at Doncaster and the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe at Longchamp possible targets later in the season. He told Oli Bell on Racing TV: "He came out of it [the Irish Derby] lovely. He's in great shape. He could have went to the King George, but we waited to go the Voltigeur. "The thinking behind the Voltigeur is after the Voltigeur he can go anyway. He can go obviously go to the Leger, he can go to the Arc. He's a very unassuming straightforward horse. Everything has went really well since as well. He's only been ticking over so it will be interesting. "It's to get another run into him. Obviously he's been trained for a race on the way to another race so he's had a very nice easy time since [the Irish Derby]. He's enjoying everything he's doing and he's not asked to do a whole lot but everybody seems happy so far with him." William Hill say money has been pouring in for the Jim Goldie-trained Jordan Electrics in the first race, with Paul Mulrennan taking the ride. His odds have been cut into 15/2 from 14/1. The firm also report significant support for Align The Stars in the Stayers Handicap at 4.10. The four-year-old is trained by Charlie Johnston and will be ridden by Joe Fanning. Spokesperson for William Hill, Lee Phelps, said: 'The highly anticipated York Ebor Festival has finally arrived, and punters are champing at the bit for the action to get started. Jordan Electrics has attracted significant support in the opening race (1.50pm), being smashed into 15/2 from 14/1 in what looks a super competitive start to the meeting. 'In the Voltigeur (3.00pm), we are happy to lay Lambourn as he may be vulnerable off the back of a break. He's currently 10/11 and we think Carmers could give him plenty to think about. Elsewhere on the card, Align The Stars has been a popular pick in the Stayers Handicap (4.10pm), having halved in price to 8/1 from 16/1. Ending the day, Utmost Respect has also been slashed into 10/3 from an opening price of 7/1 in the Nursery Handicap (5:20pm) which looks like another wide-open race with a big field.' York Ebor Festival 2025 – Day One Market Movers 1:50pm - Jordan Electrics – 15/2 from 14/1 4:10pm – Align The Stars – 8/1 from 16/1

Teen jockey warms hearts with interview after debut win

Jamie Martin, a 17-year-old Irish jockey, has warmed hearts with his post-race interview after securing a debut victory. On Friday, Jamie incredibly rode 10/1 horse Alaskan View to victory as he held off heavy favourite Highland Realm, who was listed at 2/5. Jamie's first win was made even more special by the fact that Highland Realm was steered by star jockey Patrick Mullins. Jamie Martin warmed hearts with his interview. Pic: Racing TV After the race, the teenager was joined by his dad Mick on Racing TV to share their reactions to the momentous occasion. It was a full family affair as well, as Jamie's grandfather Willie trains the horse while his brother owns her. The 17-year-old's sister also led him out alongside Mick. Jamie exclaimed: 'I'm just so grateful to have the likes of my father and grandfather to give me the opportunity. 'My brother didn't want me on the horse, but my dad had his way. I thought I was dreaming for a second. 'I was talking to a few of the lads inside and I thought I was going to be making it but there was a bit of competition for the lead and there was three horses upsides for nearly the whole first round. 'I was tanking along so I let Alaskan View off in front. 'She travelled along beautifully and then I heard Patrick coming near, but lengthened out – unreal. 'I thought I was going to fall off near the end but I made it! I looked across and said to Patrick 'Did I win or not?'' The jockey is only 17-years-old. Pic: Racing TV While discussing his brother's doubts, Jamie laughed that it was a good thing his dad had the final say. He added: 'He wanted Barry Stone, he didn't think I'd be able! Barry has rode her a few times before and is a brilliant jockey so…luckily I had my father there backing me.' The teenager further explained that he's only going into fifth year of secondary school next month so he still has a ways to go before being able to potentially focus entirely on his burgeoning riding career. Mick then went on to hail his entire racing-mad family for all contributing to the upset that saw them pip Highland Realm by half a length. He declared: 'It's great, I can't believe it. She's a nice mare and any bad runs have been my fault. 'I made a few mistakes with her, but she has always shown plenty, she is Flat bred. She is bred to sprint but she stays and it's a dream come true. 'The family are all at it now and poor Conor (his other son) got injured last year. 'My father isn't here today, I'd say he is dancing. He was 80 last week and I'm sure he is watching in. Great scenes at @TramoreRaces last night when 17-year-old Jamie Martin rode his first winner under Rules aboard Alaskan View in the finale. A fabulous family affair and a great post-race interview with @irishkor 👇 — Racing TV (@RacingTV) August 16, 2025 'Jamie has done a bit in Joseph O'Brien's this year which has brought him on a lot. JJ Slevin got him in down there and it's great.' Racing fans were overjoyed for Jamie and shared their admiration of him online. One fan wrote: 'This is why racing is one of the greatest sports in the world to see such emotional scenes like this , well done to all involved.' Another added: 'Lovely story and great memory for the Martin family! Congratulations, Jamie!' A third commented: 'Uplifting in fairness…. congratulations to all involved.'
