Lions hosting Georgia linebacker for 'top-30' visit

USA Today09-03-2025

Lions hosting Georgia linebacker for 'top-30' visit Chambliss is generally projected as a Day 3 linebacker after leading Georgia in sacks in 2024
The Lions hosted Georgia linebacker Chaz Chambliss on an official top-30 visit this week, per Justin Melo of The Draft Network.
Chambliss had a breakout season in 2024, recording a team-high 6.5 sacks with 41 tackles for the Bulldogs. He had one sack and five tackles between the SEC Championship against Texas and the College Football Playoff Quarterfinal against Notre Dame.
The Lions are likely to prioritize pass rush this offseason in an effort to build depth behind Aidan Hutchinson. Chambliss can be a developmental depth piece that will likely be available late in the draft or even go undrafted. Chambliss was not invited to the Scouting Combine.
As a quick refresher, teams are allowed to bring 30 prospects to their facilities for a pre-draft visit. These visits are colloquially referred to as "top-30" visits. They are not necessarily their top 30 prospects. These could simply be players teams want more information about in some form. Chambliss is a good example because he wasn't at the Scouting Combine, so teams weren't able to get medical information on him. This visit could simply be for that.
With the Combine over, you're going to hear plenty of "top-30" talk over the next month plus. Draft season has kicked into high gear and will soon be hitting its homestretch.

Additionally, William said that the one player he would love to play with, who his dad played with, is Nugent-Hopkins. The draft hopeful also revealed that he first met Nugent-Hopkins when he was five years old. William also commented that Nugent-Hopkins looks like he hasn't aged a day since he turned 18. William is a US-born player who spent this past season split between the USNTDP and the NCAA. He joined the University of Michigan mid-way through the season. Lions Trade Idea Would Land Shedeur Sanders From Browns

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Detroit Lions have Jared Goff under center and he has been playing well since being acquired from the Los Angeles Rams. Last season, Goff finished fifth in the NFL MVP voting. While the Lions have their quarterback of the present, Goff is now 30 years old. He has played well, but Detroit could use a better backup quarterback option and a potential quarterback of the future. Right now, the Lions have Hendon Hooker and Kyle Allen behind Goff. However, a new trade suggestion would see the team land a major name to be the new primary backup. Photo byAnne Erickson of Heavy Sports has suggested a surprising trade between Detroit and the Cleveland Browns that would feature Shedeur Sanders. Read more: Browns Insider Reveals Major Update Regarding Dillon Gabriel In her trade suggestion, Erickson had Sanders being shipped to Detroit in exchange for Hooker and a 2026 fifth-round pick. "The pitch is that the Lions get Sanders, and the Browns get (Hendon) Hooker and a 2026 fifth-round pick," Erickson wrote. "The Lions have a plethora of picks lined up for 2026, so losing a fifth-rounder shouldn't hurt too much. They would still have their coveted first and second-round picks. Plus, the Browns have a huge quarterback room, so it would be a better fit for Hooker, who seems to need more time to develop." Of course, this trade would only happen if Sanders isn't working his way up in the Browns' quarterback competition. He's facing stiff competition from Joe Flacco, Dillon Gabriel, and Kenny Pickett. Read more: Aaron Rodgers Could Be Trouble For Steelers' Mike Tomlin Says Former Rival While it's an interesting idea, no one should expect Sanders to be traded by Cleveland. The Browns' fan base has done nothing but talk about and get excited about the former Colorado star since he was drafted in the fifth round of the 2025 NFL Draft. Sanders has a legitimate chance to become a franchise quarterback in the NFL. His arm talent is more than capable of handling that role and he has shown a great drive to be special so far in Cleveland. If this trade were on the table, the Lions would be wise to pursue it. However, there is a very good chance that the Browns would have zero interest in considering moving on from Sanders at this point. Expect to continue hearing Sanders' name as the season draws closer. He's one of the most popular talking points in the NFL right now. For more Cleveland Browns, Detroit Lions, and NFL news, head over to Newsweek Sports.

Canadiens: Potential First-Round Pick

As Forrest Gump would say, a draft is a bit like a box of chocolates; you never know what you're going to get, especially when you're picking mid-round like the Montreal Canadiens will be this time around. Scouts' job becomes that much harder when so many teams get to choose before you even have one selection. It's impossible to know who will still be on the board or who will be long gone (aside from the select few who are at the very top of the class). By the time the Canadiens take to the figurative podium since the draft is held remotely this season, many of their favourites might already been picked and while I'm not suggesting drafting for need, but if the best player available when they finally get to choose, happens to be either a promising center or a promising right-shot defenseman, I don't think many would complain. A prospect that would fit the latter option is Logan Hensler, a 6-foot-2 blueliner who weighs in at 197. Advertisement Canadiens: Kypreos Reveals Trade Target Canadiens: Martin St-Louis Finished Third In The Jack Adams Trophy Voting Canadiens: Potential First Round Pick - Radim Mrtka After spending a couple of seasons with the US National Team Development program, the towering blueliner joined the University of Wisconsin in the NCAA. Adapting to play against older and bigger players hasn't been easy for the youngster, who has only produced 12 points in 32 games, down from 32 points in 61 games in his previous season with the USNTDP. Still, he projects as a top-four defenseman who's strong with good skating abilities and uses his big frame to steer opponents away from danger zones defensively and box them out. There's no denying the Canadiens could use some sight and strength on the blueline, even if it means sacrificing a bit of attack in the process. In a depth role at the World Junior Championship, he could only manage a single point in seven games as the USA skated to the gold medal. Now that he's got more experience under his belt, he should play a more prominent role in the future. Advertisement He met with the Canadiens' organization at the Combine in Buffalo. He told TVA Sports' Anthony Martineau that he could reach another level offensively but preferred to focus on his defense this year. He models his game after Ottawa Senators' blueliner Jake Sanderson and wants to put on weight this Summer to improve his physical game. The prospect also told TVA Sports that David Reinbacher is an excellent right-shot defenseman just like him and that he doesn't fear the competition with him or anyone else. Big talk for the youngster, but confidence is a must in this business, and it should serve him well. Photo credit: David Reginek-Imagn Images Canadiens stories, analysis, breaking news, and more!
