Even in defeat, we don't abandon people: Gujarat BJP chief ahead of Assembly bypolls

Hans Indiaa day ago

With nearly over a week left for the upcoming Visavadar Assembly by-election, the Gujarat BJP unit has gone into action mode, treating the triangular political contest as a matter of prestige.
In a campaign event held on Monday, Gujarat BJP President and Union Jal Shakti Minister, C.R. Paatil, addressed a gathering of party workers and local leaders at Bhesan in Junagadh district, declaring that the BJP "has never learned to lose, and even when defeated, it doesn't abandon its ground".
Attacking both the Congress and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Paatil warned voters not to fall for the "delusions and provocations" of parties that, according to him, "have no base in Gujarat" and lost deposits on 136 seats in the 2022 Assembly election.
"Those who came from Delhi and claimed they would form the government had their deposits forfeited by Gujarat's voters," he said, pointing to the BJP's dominant win in 156 Assembly constituencies in 2022 state election.
Reminding the people at the gathering that although Visavadar voters may have "experimented" in the 2022 Assembly election, this time there should be no mistakes, Paatil urged, noting that the Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel himself came to file nomination papers with BJP candidate Kirit Patel -- "a sign of the state leadership's commitment to Visavadar's progress".
Kirit Patel, the BJP's candidate in the upcoming bypoll, also addressed the gathering, highlighting his long-standing connection with Visavadar, Bhesan and Junagadh.
"I have worked in this region for 16 years, assisting with education, health and resolving civic issues. During crises like Covid-19, I stood by the people," he said.
Patel also alleged a conspiracy by Opposition candidates "brought in from outside" and claimed they were spreading misinformation and misleading voters.
"These are not development-focused people. They only incite and provoke," he said, contrasting it with what he described as the BJP's platform of "development and trust".
A total of 16 candidates are contesting the Visavadar seat, 12 of whom, Patel claimed, have no real ties to the region.
"Visavadar does not need outsiders," he emphasised.
The rally was also attended by several top BJP leaders, including MPs, Ministers, and MLAs -- Raghavji Patel, Kunvarji Bavaliya, Mulubhai Bera, Mukesh Patel, Rajesh Chudasama, Jayesh Radadiya, and others.
The upcoming by-elections for the Visavadar and Kadi Assembly constituencies in Gujarat, scheduled for June 19, have emerged as politically significant contests for all three major parties -- the BJP, Congress and the AAP.
The Visavadar seat fell vacant after BJP MLA Harshad Ribadiya resigned and joined the Congress ahead of the 2022 Assembly elections, only to return to the BJP recently.
Meanwhile, the Kadi Assembly seat became vacant following the resignation of Congress MLA Karshan Solanki, who also joined the BJP.

CPI(M-L) likely to contest around 45 seats in Bihar Assembly election

The Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist), an ally of the Opposition Mahagathbandhan (grand alliance) in Bihar, is planning to contest around 45 seats of the total 243 in the Assembly election due later this year. The CPI(M-L) will also launch a campaign, 'Badlo Sarkar-Badlo Bihar' (change the government, change Bihar)', across the State soon. Addressing mediapersons in Patna on Tuesday (June 10, 2025), CPI(M-L) national general secretary Dipankar Bhattacharya said: 'Our party has been making preparations to contest 40-45 Assembly seats in the upcoming election. In the coming days, there would be talks on seat sharing and the agendas on which the Mahagathbandhan would contest the poll.' Won 12 in 2020 election In the last 2020 Assembly election, the party won 12 seats out of 19 it contested. The CPI(M-L), the Communist Party of India (CPI) and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) together won 16 out of the total 29 seats in the election. The CPI had contested six seats, while the CPI(M) fought on four seats. Both won two seats each. In the 2024 Lok Sabha election, the CPI(M-L) won two seats of Ara and Karakat of the total 40 seats. 'No governance' The CPI(M-L) slammed the NDA governments led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the Centre and Chief Minister Nitish Kumar in the State on national security and law and order issues. 'Today there is no government as such in the State. Law and order has collapsed and the people of the State are caught between crime and corruption,' Mr. Bhattacharya alleged. 'Cases of rape have become common, and feudal atrocities have increased in the name of development and good governance in the State. People of the State now are trying to get rid of this oppressive government,' he said. The party leader said the CPI(M-L) would run the Badlo Sarkar-Badlo Bihar campaign from June 18 to June 27, especially in the four regions of Shahabad, Saran-Champaran, Magadh, and Muzaffarpur to Darbhanga. Calls for special session The CPI(M-L) leader criticised the Modi-led government over its foreign policy too. 'The Modi government had sent seven delegations to 32 countries (following Operation Sindoor), but India's international isolation continues. They [the Central government] should call a special session of Parliament to discuss the Pahalgam terrorist incident and the situation thereafter,' he said. 'The BJP-led NDA government has weakened the country on every front, especially on issues related with national security and foreign policy,' he said. On the ongoing (anti-Maoist) 'Operation Kagar' in Chhattisgarh, Mr. Bhattacharya said: 'It's all state- sponsored violence. The five Left parties of the country have written a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on June 9 demanding an immediate stay on the ongoing operation.' Polit Bureau member Dhirendra Jha, party legislators Gopal Ravidas and Sandeep Saurabh, party MLC Sashi Yadav, and senior State leaders K.D. Yadav and Umesh Singh were present on the occasion.

Nitish Kumar has performed the last rites for law and order in Bihar: Lalu Prasad

Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) Chief Lalu Prasad on Tuesday (June 10, 2025) criticised Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar over the alleged deterioration of law and order in the State. In a post on X, Mr. Prasad accused Mr. Kumar of not only ruining the State's law and order but also performing its last rites. This comes after Mr. Prasad's son, Tejashwi Yadav, Leader of Opposition in the Bihar Legislative Assembly, lashed out at Mr. Kumar over the issue of a double murder in Patna, where a mother and daughter were shot dead by three unidentified criminals. 'Nitish, tell us, how many murders are happening before 5 p.m.?' Mr. Prasad asked. Stating that he was sharing official figures, Mr. Prasad said that under Mr. Kumar's tenure, Bihar had witnessed 65,000 murders. 'Nitish-BJP have not only ruined law and order but also performed its last rites. Never, ever has there been such a corrupt, negligent, and lazy police force in Bihar,' Mr. Prasad said in the post. Leaders of the ruling Janata Dal (United) and the Bharatiya Janata Party hit back at Mr. Prasad asking him not to give a sermon on law and order. Bihar's JD(U) President, Umesh Singh Kushwaha, countered the RJD supremo's statement and said that those who gave protection to criminals for political gains were now preaching on law. 'Before raising questions on law and order, the RJD supremo should consult his conscience and question himself. At the same time, he should publicly apologise for bringing Jungle Raj in Bihar. The law-and-order situation was so pathetic during the Lalu-Rabri regime that most of the criminal incidents were not even registered, because the criminals had the open protection of the government,' Mr. Kushwaha said in a press statement. BJP leader and Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary too attacked Mr. Prasad, saying that during his rule, crime was committed under the protection of power, whereas, today, under Nitish Kumar's good governance, there was no organised crime and criminals were not let go on the basis of caste or religion. 'Action is taken within 48 to 72 hours of the incident. No one can escape after committing a big crime. RJD leaders do politics by exaggerating some incidents of murder in family feuds or land disputes and defaming Bihar,' Mr. Choudhary said, while speaking to the media in Patna. To a question on the murder statistics shared by Mr. Prasad on 'X', Mr. Choudhary said, 'He should also post the figures of kidnapping, murder and massacre that took place during his 15 years of rule. People have not forgotten the fear and anarchy that was created during his rule. Its impact is still there, that is why investors hesitate to invest in Bihar.' He pointed out that Mr. Prasad was unable to see the rapid infrastructural development that had been done in Bihar in 11 years by the double engine government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Nitish Kumar. Mr. Choudhary added that Mr. Prasad had been a powerful Minister in the UPA Government at the Centre, but Bihar did not get even ₹2 lakh crore in aid during his 10 years. 'However, the Modi government had invested ₹14 lakh crore in the State for the development of roads, bridges, electricity and airports,' he said.

Kerala HC summons Priyanka Gandhi in petition challenging Wayanad win

The Kerala High Court on Tuesday issued summons to Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra in response to a petition filed by Navya Haridas, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate who contested the Wayanad Lok Sabha bypoll in November 2024. The petition challenges the validity of Gandhi's electoral victory, alleging suppression of critical financial information. Justice K Babu admitted the petition after hearing arguments from Haridas's counsel and scheduled the matter for further hearing in August, according to a report by Bar and Bench. The bypoll and results The by-election was necessitated after Rahul Gandhi vacated the Wayanad seat to retain Rae Bareli. Priyanka Gandhi contested in his place, marking her electoral debut, and won with a margin of over 500,000 votes. Sathyan Mokeri of the Communist Party of India came in second, while Navya Haridas placed third, securing just over 100,000 votes. Allegations against Priyanka Gandhi In her petition, Haridas alleged that Priyanka Gandhi Vadra failed to disclose multiple immovable properties owned by her and her husband Robert Vadra, in addition to investments and movable assets held in Vadra's name. These omissions, the petition argues, amount to a 'suppression of material facts' and violate mandatory disclosure norms under the Representation of the People Act, 1951. Haridas also claimed that these alleged non-disclosures misled voters and constituted corrupt practices under Section 123 of the Act. Further, she accused Gandhi of exerting undue influence on voters during the campaign and argued that these actions should render the election null and void. The summons adds legal uncertainty to Priyanka Gandhi's high-profile political entry, even as the Congress party prepares to defend its case in court.
