Printed, seized, forgotten: PSEB textbook scam stuck since 2016

1 2 Mohali: Nearly nine years after an FIR was registered in the Punjab School Education Board (PSEB) textbook paper scam, the case continues to languish with little progress. The board is still awaiting a reply from the Rajasthan board, after discovering that a paper carrying the latter's watermark was used in textbooks meant for Punjab students — a violation of publishing norms. The scam came to light in 2016, when PSEB that found several textbooks meant for Punjab schools, were printed on paper carrying the Rajasthan board's watermark, instead of the mandated PSEB watermark. Suspecting foul play, the board registered an FIR against Jalandhar-based Choice Printers, accusing the publisher of printing extra copies using unauthorised paper for financial gain. The board seized the questionable textbooks and placed them in the custody of police. The books remain under official possession to this day. In a surprising twist, the police, in a letter to PSEB recently, stated that none of the seven schools listed as recipients of the faulty textbooks appeared to record their statements. However, the board clarified that four schools had indeed deposed, while three had failed to do so — a shortfall the police claim is hindering further proceedings. PSEB chairperson Amarpal Singh, commenting on the matter, said, "I am new to the board, and this case dates to nearly a decade. I will ensure the officials concerned follow it up appropriately." Sources within the board said police were considering closing the case due to lack of evidence and witness cooperation. However, the board remains firm in its stance and is prepared to challenge any such move. "We will not let the case be closed without a legal conclusion. This is not just a violation of protocol, but a clear attempt to exploit the system for profit," a PSEB official said on condition of anonymity. The core allegation revolves around the use of Rajasthan board-marked paper in printing PSEB textbooks, allegedly to produce excess copies beyond the approved quantity. The board collected samples from various parts of the state and confirmed the discrepancy before filing the FIR. Despite the gravity of the matter, no substantial progress has been made since 2016, leaving questions over accountability and enforcement of publishing standards in the education system. With the board is now pledging to revive the investigation, the case may finally inch towards a long-delayed legal resolution.

ED nod to release property after Pune realtor's discharge in PMLA case

A property belonging to Pune-based builder Avinash Bhosale is likely to be released soon as the Enforcement Directorate (ED) has made a request regarding the same to the government after the builder was discharged by a Special Court in Mumbai in December 2022. The said property was attached in an alleged money laundering case. The ED Mumbai Zone-2 office on June 12 this year wrote to the Inspector General of Registration and Controller of Stamps, Pune, requesting the government department to release the seized property in the case related to ARA Properties and Avinash Bhosale. The said property, Plot 2, Yashwant Ghadge Nagar Cooperative Housing Society, Range Hill Corner, Ganeshkhind Road, Pune, MH, 411007, was provisionally attached by ED on August 7, 2021, in connection with the alleged money laundering case against Ara Properties and Avinash Bhosale registered on the basis of the land-grabbing case. However, the special PMLA court on December 6, 2022, and April 12, 2023, discharged all the accused in the case, as the predicate offence registered by Pune's Chaturshringi police under sections of cheating and criminal breach of trust, among other charges, was closed by the first probe agency through closure summary report. Later, the appellate tribunal also set aside the attachment order, and the same has been accepted.

Amit Shah comes to Lok Sabha armed with proof on Pahalgam attackers

NEW DELHI: The three Pakistani terrorists who gunned down 26 civilians, including 25 tourists, in J&K's Pahalgam in front of their horror-struck families, were cornered and killed on Monday in a joint operation by the Army, CRPF and police in Dachigam area on the outskirts of Srinagar, home minister Amit Shah disclosed in Lok Sabha on Tuesday. Participating in the debate on Operation Sindoor, Shah identified the three attackers killed in 'Operation Mahadev' as Suleman alias Faizal Jatt alias Anas alias Usama Markaz; Hamza Afghan; and Jibran, all Pakistanis and affiliated to the Lashker-e-Taiba (LeT). Suleman, a top-grade LeT commander and the mastermind of the April 22 Pahalgam attack, was also involved in the Oct 2024 attack at the Z-Morh construction site in Gagangir, in which six labourers and a local doctor were killed, he said. Both Hamza and Jibran were also 'A-grade' LeT terrorists. The three were identified by family members of two locals arrested on June 22 by NIA - Parvaiz and Bashir. The duo had provided food and shelter to them at their 'dhok (seasonal hut)' some 2km from Baisaran prior to the attack. A source said they were paid around Rs 3,000 by the terrorists. Shah had come to LS armed with conclusive evidence of direct involvement of the three terrorists in the Pahalgam attack as well as their Pakistani roots. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Seniors Born 1939-1969 Receive 11 Benefits This Month If They Ask Super Saving Online Undo The ballistic report, he said, matched the cartridges and barrel of the weapons recovered from the slain terrorists, with the spent casings secured from the attack site. Two of the three terrorists were carrying Pakistani voter IDs and the weapons - an M4 carbine and two AK-47s - and chocolates recovered from them further sealed the Pakistani link. The neutralisation of all three Pahalgam attackers marks the culmination of a massive manhunt, which started with Shah's instructions to the forces at a security meeting on April 23 to not allow them to escape to Pakistan. As many as 1,055 eyewitnesses and suspects were questioned by NIA and other agencies over 3,000 hours, and sketches of the terrorists were prepared. Shah said it was on May 22 that human intelligence on presence of the assailants in Dachigam area was received. Technical surveillance was mounted by the Army and Intelligence Bureau to capture 'Ultra' signals of communications between the terrorists and their handlers in Pakistan. "IB, Army and CRPF personnel traversed on foot in cold and high altitudes to receive the signals. On July 22, we got success through sensors, and the location of the terrorists was confirmed. An operation was launched by CRPF and J&K Police under the leadership of 4 Para, and the three terrorists were surrounded and killed," he said.
