JK: Jaish terrorists killed in Udhampur encounter

Ahead of Amarnath Yatra, a terrorist of Jaish -e-Mohammad (JeM) outfit was gunned down during an encounter between security forces and four terrorists in the Basantgarh area of Udhampur district on Thursday morning, army's Nagrota-based White Knight Corps stated on X. A securityman during a search operation after an encounter broke out between security forces and terrorists in a remote forested area, in Jammu and Kashmir's Udhampur district on Thursday. (PTI) Earlier, a senior police officer said that acting on an intelligence input, a joint operation was launched by the police and the army in Basantgarh during which they came under intense fire, triggering a gunfight. Additional reinforcements were rushed to the area. Jammu zone IGP Bhim Sen Tuti said the encounter took place around 8:30 am. 'The search operation is still on. The situation will become clear after the weather clears. It is a group of four terrorists. We had been monitoring these terrorists for the past year.' The IGP further said that adequate security arrangements were made for the ensuing Amarnath Yatra. 'This time around, we have got more paramilitary companies from the Centre,' he said. Tuti further informed that this year there shall be road opening parties on the Pathankot -Jammu national highway as well. The Jammu IGP also requested Amarnath pilgrims, who wish to start their Yatra from Jammu, to join only the official convoys for a safe and secure journey from Yatri Niwas base camp at Bhagwati Nagar. 'Such pilgrims should avoid independent travel,' he added. The Basantgarh encounter comes at a time when hardly a week has left for the annual Amarnath pilgrimage that begins July 3. The first batch of pilgrims from Jammu will be flagged off on July 2 for Pahalgam and Baltal-based camps. Meanwhile, security forces in Udhampur conducted a mock drill on Jammu-Srinagar national highway (NH 44) in view of the pilgrimage that has always remained a 'high value' target for the Pakistani terrorists. On April 22, Pakistani terrorists had attacked unarmed tourists in Pahalgam, leaving 26 dead and scores injured. The attack had compelled India to launch Operation Sindoor on May 6, resulting in strikes on terror camps. Consequently, India and Pakistan indulged in a conflict from May 7 to 10 before US president Donald Trump claimed he enforced a ceasefire between the two nuclear-armed countries.

1 terrorist killed in ongoing encounter in J&K's Udhampur

One terrorist was killed on Thursday in an encounter with a joint team of security forces at Basantgarh in Jammu and Kashmir's Udhampur district, police said. According to sources, the slain man was part of a group allied to the Jaish-e-Mohammad, who security forces had been tracking for a while. Inspector General of Police (Jammu zone) Bhim Sen Tuti said, 'They are believed to be four in number, and we have been tracking (them) for the last one year.' Contact was established with them at around 8.30 am, he said. The ongoing operation is taking place amid rain and dense fog, hampering visibility. Reinforcements have been rushed to the area to keep terrorists from escaping the encounter site, officials said. The IG said the 'real picture will emerge once the weather improves'. The Nagrota-based White Knight Corps of the Army said in the morning that the encounter began during a joint operation by the Army and the Jammu and Kashmir Police. 'Op BIHALI. Based on specific intelligence, a joint operation was launched by the Indian Army and the Jammu and Kashmir Police in the BIHALI area of Basantgarh. Contact has been established with terrorists. The operation is in progress,' it said in the post. Meanwhile, sources said the holed up terrorists appeared to be Pakistani nationals who are likely to be involved in the killing of a village defence guard (VDG) and an Army soldier during separate encounters since last year. They said the group likely entered Basantgarh from the adjoining Kathua district and had come from across the International Border with Pakistan. The police and security forces have been tracking the group since last year and managed to intercept it on a number of occasions. The terrorists had, however, been managing to escape with the help of either dense forests or adverse weather conditions, officials said. Thursday's encounter comes days ahead of the annual Amarnath yatra to the south Kashmir Himalayas, beginning July 3 from both the Pahalgam and Baltal routes. The yatra, which is undertaken by lakhs of pilgrims from all over the country, will conclude on August 9. In 2024, a record number of more than 5.12 lakh pilgrims had visited the Amarnath shrine, situated at a height of 3,880 metres, during the 52-day yatra. In 2023, the number of pilgrims was 4.5 lakh. This year, the yatra is being organised under intensified security cover in view of the April 22 terrorist attack in Pahalgam, in which 25 tourists and a local man were killed. While multiple security layers have been established, the administration has declared both yatra routes from Pahalgam and Baltal no-fly zones.

Jammu: Soldier killed in Kishtwar encounter, 2 others hurt

A soldier was killed in action and two others were wounded during a fierce gun battle with a group of Jaish terrorists, believed to be three to four in numbers, in a forested area of Kishtwar district on Thursday, officials said. Acting on an intelligence input provided by local police, a joint search operation was launched in Singhpora area of Chatroo around 6 am by para commandos of the elite special forces and army's counter insurgency wings — 7 Assam Rifles, 11 Rashtriya Rifles besides special operations group of the Jammu and Kashmir Police. 'A fierce gunfight erupted this morning between terrorists and security forces in which three soldiers were injured. They were immediately evacuated to the Command Hospital in Udhampur where one of them succumbed to his injuries,' said defence officials. Nagrota-based White Knight Corps stated on X, 'During the ongoing operation, fierce gunfight is continuing. One of our #Bravehearts (sic) sustained grievous injuries in the exchange of fire and has succumbed despite best medical efforts. Operation is in progress.' Reinforcements were rushed to the area. 'After initial gunfight, intermittent firing took place during the day. A cordon is in place and the operation is on to neutralise the terrorists,' said defence officials. Official sources confided to HT that three to four Jaish terrorists with whom intermittent exchange of fire was on included outfit's self-styled commander Saifullah Balochi. Recent encounters and terrorists' movement On April 12, one Saifullah Balochi had managed to escape during an encounter in the adjoining Naidgam forests of Chatroo. However, security forces had gunned down three terrorists — Adil, Farman and Basha. The Singhpora forest in Kishtwar is geographically located next to Anantnag district and has remained a transit route for terrorists to cross over to Kashmir. On April 3, two terrorists had barged into a house in Udhampur's Chore Panjwa-Khabbal area in Majalta block, held the family hostage and forcibly took away a mobile phone and food before fleeing around 10 pm. The terrorists were first sighted in a forest in Saniyal village of Hiranagar sector on March 23. Police and security forces have been tracking terrorists moving from one area to another since March 23. Two terrorists and four policemen were killed in the encounter on March 27 in Sufain forest near Jakhole village of Kathua district.
