Sonny Gray deals one-hitter as Cardinals cruise vs. Guardians

Reuters2 days ago

June 28 - Sonny Gray threw a one-hitter and struck out a season-high 11 and Alec Burleson and Nolan Arenado drove in two runs apiece as the visiting St. Louis Cardinals beat the Cleveland Guardians 5-0 on Friday night.
Gray (8-2) only permitted a single to Nolan Jones in the fifth inning and did not issue a walk in his 89-pitch masterpiece. The Guardians failed to get the ball out of the infield until the fourth inning and did not advance a runner to second base.
The right-hander tossed his first shutout since July 28, 2015 and his first nine-inning complete game since Aug. 7, 2015 -- both with the Oakland Athletics. It was also Gray's first complete game since 2017, when he was a member of the New York Yankees.
The Cardinals took a 3-0 lead in the third when Burleson belted a two-run homer and Pedro Pages had a solo shot against Guardians starter Luis Ortiz (4-9), who also committed his second error of the evening in the inning.
In the sixth, Burleson doubled and came home on Nolan Arenado's two-bagger off the wall. Arenado tacked on an RBI single in the eighth off Jakob Junis to complete the scoring.
St. Louis played its 10th game in a nine-day span, going 7-3 against the Chicago White Sox, Cincinnati Reds, Chicago Cubs and Cleveland. If they win the next two contests, the Cardinals will sweep the Guardians for the initial time.
Ortiz worked seven innings, giving up four runs on six hits, with five strikeouts and one walk. The right-hander is 0-3 with an 8.53 ERA in six games against the Cardinals.
The Guardians are 15-23 since May 13, when they were a season-high eight games over .500. Cleveland was shutout for the second straight game and has lost three of four on its homestand.
Guardians All-Star third baseman Jose Ramirez did not play, one day after being hit by a pitch from Toronto's Kevin Gausman on his right arm.

Reds release INF Jeimer Candelario after struggles

June 30 - The Cincinnati Reds officially released infielder Jeimer Candelario on Sunday after he cleared waivers following his designation for assignment on Monday. Candelario, 31, was only halfway through a three-year, $45 million contract he signed before the 2024 season that made him the Reds' highest-priced free agent in five years. The veteran first and third baseman had been on the injured list since late April due to a lumbar spine strain. The Reds reinstated him from the injured list on Monday as he ran out of time on a minor league rehabilitation assignment and have let him go while owing him nearly $23 million. Candelario played in 22 games, with 12 starts at third base and seven starts at first, before going on the IL. He batted an abysmal .113 (9-for-80) with two home runs and 10 RBIs. His last game was on April 27, when he went 0-for-4 as a designated hitter in an 8-1 road win against the Colorado Rockies. In his first season in Cincinnati, he made 112 appearances and batted .225 with 20 homers, 23 doubles and 56 RBIs. Following stints with the Chicago Cubs (2016-17) and Detroit Tigers (2017-22), Candelario had one of the best seasons of his career in 2023, split between the Washington Nationals and Cubs. He batted .251 with career highs of 22 homers and 70 RBIs, prompting the Reds to pursue him in free agency. The Reds have moved forward with Christian Encarnacion-Strand at third base and Spencer Steer at first as their main corner infielders. --Field Level Media

BREAKING NEWS USA survives Gold Cup scare against Costa Rica after ex-coach's son Sebastian Berhalter misses penalty

The USA survived a Gold Cup scare against Costa Rica on Sunday night as they moved into the last four of the tournament via penalties. Costa Rica scored first in the match before the hosts took the lead via Diego Luna and Max Arfsten, with Alfonso Martinez later knotting the game at 2-2 in the 71st minute. The match went straight from regulation to penalties - with ex-coach Gregg Berhalter's son Sebastian missing a spot kick - before John Tolkin ultimately missed a chance to win the shootout as well. However, Damion Downs later spared his teammates' blushes as he scored the winning penalty against Keylor Navas. They Americans will face Guatemala in the semifinals.

Reports: Rockets reward Jabari Smith Jr. with 5-year, $122M extension

June 30 - The Houston Rockets and forward Jabari Smith Jr. agreed to a five-year, $122 million extension of his rookie contract, ESPN and The Athletic reported Sunday. Smith, 22, has averaged 13.0 points and 7.5 rebounds across three NBA seasons since the Rockets selected him third overall in the 2022 draft. He put up 12.2 points and 7.0 rebounds per game over 57 games (39 starts) in 2024-25. Smith helped the Rockets earn the No. 2 seed in the Western Conference playoffs, though Houston then lost a seven-game series to the Golden State Warriors in the first round. The Rockets responded by making a blockbuster trade to acquire Kevin Durant from the Phoenix Suns. Durant joins a Houston core that includes Smith, Alperen Sengun, Amen Thompson and Fred VanVleet, with VanVleet reported to receive a two-year, $50 million contract to remain with the Rockets --Field Level Media
