KOTA KINABALU (May 9): A car ended up in a sewage pond after its 49-year-old driver accidentally swerved off the road into the roadside water catchment near Kingfisher Park early this morning.
The driver of the Perodua Viva and his 79-year-old mother, were trapped at first but managed to clamber out of the wade and wade to safety with the help of passers-by using a long branch.
One of the passers by was an off-duty fireman who saw them as he drove by, and got into the pond and assisted the victims to safety and also attached a cable to the vehicle for towing later.
Lintas fire station chief Agustavia Joe Guasi said both victims were safe.
'The off-duty fireman, Hasrulnizam Zain, had assisted the victims by holding out a long wooden branch to them,' she said.
'The woman got out of the car through the back door and held on to the stick to clamber to safety while the man had escaped via the driver's seat window,'
Earlier, she said the department received a distress call at around 8.28am, and a team was sent to respond.

Mother and son killed in three-vehicle collision
SEGAMAT: A mother and her son were killed in a three-vehicle accident at Km148 of Jalan Johor Baru–Seremban near Chaah here earlier today. Segamat police chief Superintendent Ahmad Zamry Marinsah said the victims, a woman in her 70s and her son in his 30s, were travelling in a Perodua Viva when it was rear-ended by a four-wheel drive vehicle, which was driven by a man in his 70s. The impact caused the car to veer into the opposite lane. "A lorry driven by a man in his 40s was approaching from the opposite direction and was unable to avoid the car, resulting in a collision," he said when contacted. Both mother and son sustained fatal injuries and were pronounced dead at the scene by a medical team. Zamry said the drivers of the four-wheel drive and the lorry were uninjured. He said the case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

Lintas Fire and Rescue Station Chief Agustavia Joe Guasi said they received a distress call at 11.12am, prompting the deployment of 10 personnel with a fire engine and Emergency Medical Rescue Services (EMRS) vehicle, assisted by 14 more firefighters and an additional engine and EMRS unit from the Kota Kinabalu station. 'Upon arrival, firefighters found the victim trapped underneath the lorry and used special rescue tools to extricate the body, which was then handed over to the Health Ministry personnel for further action,' she said. In PENAMPANG, a 42-year-old was killed when his motorcycle collided with a car near Kg Meruntum, Putatan, along the Kota Kinabalu-Papar road. Advertisement Penampang District Police Chief Supt Sammy Newton said preliminary investigations showed the motorcycle was suspected of travelling against the flow of traffic from Kinarut towards Putatan when the collision happened at 4.20am. The car was driven by a 55-year-old man heading from Petagas towards Papar. The motorcyclist was pronounced dead at the scene. The remains has been sent for post mortem. Thai man dies in crash after stealing car, bike
SUNGAI PETANI: A Thai man was killed in a collision with a lorry on the Sungai Lalang–Bukit Selambau road, shortly after stealing a car and a motorcycle. The man, who worked as a helper at a local restaurant, is believed to have begun his ill-fated journey around 6pm on Monday, when he allegedly stole a Perodua Kancil belonging to his employer in Bedong. "Upon reaching Ambangan Heights, the vehicle was involved in a collision with a Perodua Viva. "The crash caused engine damage, rendering the car immobile," said Kuala Muda district police chief, Assistant Commissioner Hanyan Ramlan. "At the scene of the first accident, the man then stole a Honda Wave motorcycle from a passer-by who had stopped to help and fled in the direction of Bukit Selambau." However, his escape was short-lived. After riding for approximately 10km, the man was involved in another collision—this time with a lorry. "He died at the scene from severe head and body injuries. He is believed to have been in his 20s," Hanyan added. Later that evening, police received two separate reports of vehicle theft—one from the employer and another from the motorcycle owner. "Preliminary investigations have confirmed that the deceased was involved in both thefts. The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987," he said.
