Two water projects worth over Rs70bn to be launched in Faisalabad
Punjab Housing, Urban Development and Public Health Secretary Noor-ul-Amin Mengal chaired a meeting.
On this occasion, WASA Faisalabad MD Sohail Qadir Cheema gave a detailed briefing on the projects, disclosed a department spokesperson on Monday.
According to the briefing, two major water infrastructure projects - a surface water treatment plant and a wastewater treatment plant - are being launched in Faisalabad to improve access to clean water. The first project will cost Rs 14.6 billion while the second one will cost over Rs 56 billion; international donor agencies will fund these projects. The surface water treatment plant is scheduled for completion by June 2027, and the wastewater treatment plant will be completed by July 2028.
While addressing the meeting, the Secretary stated that once completed, these plants will treat a total of 63 million gallons of water per day, benefiting more than 700,000 residents in the eastern parts of Faisalabad. He added that over 56,000 households will receive access to safe drinking water through these efforts. 'The treated wastewater will be made suitable for agricultural use, contributing to resource conservation and environmental sustainability,' he added.
Mengal also shared that in future, a total of three wastewater treatment plants were planned for Faisalabad to meet the city's growing population and urban needs.
'Under the directives of Chief Minister Punjab, we are ensuring the smart and efficient use of public resources to provide equal and high-quality urban services across all regions,' he emphasised.
Meanwhile, in a separate meeting, the Secretary reviewed the progress made on the 'Apni Chat Apna Ghar' programme. On this occasion, he said over 8,000 families have already completed construction of their homes, while more than 35,000 families have received second loan installments for the construction. He added that the government aims at facilitating the construction of over 100,000 homes annually under this flagship initiative.
Mengal further revealed that the programme has received more than 1.5 million applications to date, a clear reflection of public confidence and overwhelming interest. 'To ensure convenience, the entire application process has been made online,' he added.
According to him, under the people-first vision of Chief Minister Punjab Maryam Nawaz Sharif, the 'Apni Chat Apna Ghar' programme is transforming the dream of homeownership into reality for thousands of low-income families across the province. This programme has not only eased the financial burden of renting for many but also empowered families to build homes of their own.

LHC sets aside FIR order against Suleman Shehbaz
Chief Justice Aalia Neelum of the Lahore High Court (LHC) has set aside a district court's order directing the registration of a First Information Report (FIR) against Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif's son, Suleman Shehbaz, in a cheque dishonour case. The high court held that the lower court failed to properly examine the facts of the matter. Suleman Shehbaz had challenged the July 10 order issued by the district judge, which instructed police to register an FIR against him on charges of issuing a bounced cheque. During the LHC proceedings, Suleman's counsel contended that the district court's decision was not only contrary to law but also passed without a proper review of the factual background. The respondent's counsel alleged that Suleman's company had purchased 17 laptops and issued a cheque for Rs 600,000 in payment, which was later dishonoured. However, Suleman's counsel countered that no laptops were ever delivered to the company's office. He further argued that the cheques in question were stolen by company employees and wrongfully handed over to the respondent. An FIR had already been registered against those individuals, he added. 'The company has no connection with these cheques,' the counsel asserted. Chief justice also questioned the respondent's legal team for failing to specify the date of the alleged laptop purchase. She noted that no purchase receipts bore any official stamp either. After hearing arguments from both sides, chief justice ruled in favour of the petitioner and annulled the district court's order.

Crescent Star Insurance resumes guarantee-backed business
Crescent Star Insurance Limited (CSIL) announced on Thursday that it had resumed its guarantee business. This was shared by the company in a notice to the Pakistan Stock Exchange today. The CSIL said that the Islamabad High Court had set aside and declared void the directions issued to the company by SECP to stop/cease guarantee business. Last year, the Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP) ceased the guarantee business through a direction, under Section 60 of the Insurance Ordinance, 2000 (Ordinance). Crescent Star had issued guarantees amounting to Rs 229 billion without obtaining requisite collateral and any valid reinsurance arrangements. The CSIL was incorporated in Pakistan as a Public Limited Company in the year 1957, under the Companies Act, 1913, now the Companies Act, 2017. The company is engaged in providing non-life general insurance services.

Unskilled workers: Sindh notifies minimum monthly wage
KARACHI: The Government of Sindh has officially notified a minimum monthly wage of Rs. 40,000 for unskilled workers employed across all industrial and commercial establishments in the province, effective from July 01, 2025. Provincial Labour Minister Shahid Abdul Salam Thaheem, while announcing the revised wage structure, said the minimum monthly salary for semi-skilled workers has been set at Rs. 41,380, for skilled workers at Rs. 49,628, and for highly skilled workers at Rs. 51,745. These revised rates are applicable across all registered and unregistered establishments, ensuring equal pay for male and female workers. He further added that any establishment paying on an hourly basis must now ensure a minimum payment of Rs. 192 per hour for their workers. 'The Government of Sindh is committed to pro-labour policies and continues to take concrete steps to guarantee decent wages, improved working conditions, and the overall welfare of workers,' said the Minister. He emphasized that the wage revision aims to ease the economic burden of inflation and promote a dignified livelihood for the working class.
