
Can't Wrap Your Head Around Pi? Here's a Cool Visual to Help

We celebrate pi on March 14 because 3-14 gives the first three digits of this famous number. But what's the big deal about pi anyway? Why does it get a day? Well, for starters, it defines the simplest, most perfect shape, the circle. So it's everywhere around you. Pi is the ratio of the circumference to the diameter of a circle: π = C/d.
No matter how big or small a circle is, that ratio is always the same. In decimal notation, it's 3.141592653 … aaand you can run that out as far as you want, because it's an irrational number, and it never, ever, ever ends.
What people do—in fact what calculators do if you press the π button—is choose a certain number of decimal places, depending on the precision required, and round off to that number. It's not really pi, but you could say … it's a piece of pi. (Sorry, but every Pi Day story needs a pi-pun.) Irrational Is as Irrational Does
Being infinitely long doesn't in itself make a number irrational. For example, say you have a rectangle that measures 4 by 11 meters. The ratio of the sides, 4/11, equals 0.36363636 … This number is also endless, but it follows a pattern. With irrational numbers, there's no repetition .
The real distinction is that rational numbers can be written as a ratio of two integers. (Get it? ratio-nal.) And ratios are the same thing as fractions. So:
It's also the case that any finite decimal number, no matter how long, can be expressed as the ratio of two integers. (Which is pretty mind-boggling all by itself.) Irrational numbers, on the other hand, can't be expressed in fractional form .
Oh, you can try . For example, 22/7 is a pretty good approximation. But it's not pi. (We could have celebrated Pi Day on July 22, since most of the world uses the day-month-year format for dates, and that would be 22-7.)
But maybe you're not inclined to take my word for it. So here's what I'm going to do: I'm going to use a brute-force algorithm I made in Python to generate all possible integer fractions and see if one of them equals pi. No Pi in Python
What's a brute-force method? It's a way of solving a problem that doesn't require cleverness, just a ton of work. My program starts with the fraction 1/1 and methodically ratchets it up by adding 1 to the numerator or the denominator. Here's the recipe:
- Take the fraction (u/v) and compare to pi
- If u/v is less than pi, add one to the numerator (u+1)
- If u/v is greater than pi, add one to the denominator (v+1)
- If u/v is equal to pi, you win. You just proved that pi is rational.
So the series starts like this: 1/1, 2/1, 3/1, 4/1, 4/2, 5/2, 6/2, 7/2, 7/3, 8/3 … I mean, you could do this on paper, but you'd soon go mad. I ran my program to iterate 1,000 times. (If you want to see the code, here it is on Google Colab.) Then I plotted the decimal value for all 1,000 fractions (Since the horizontal axis goes from 1 to 1,000, I'm using a log scale to compress it.)
After 1,000 runs, I have a fraction of 760/242. This is a fine value for pi. It's accurate to two decimal places—the standard 3.14, which is what a lot of people use anyway. But it's not pi. Oh, well, how about 500,000 iterations?
This gives me a final fraction of:
This integer ratio is close—it matches pi up to the sixth decimal place—but it's still not pi. OK, how about 10 million iterations? This gives an integer fraction of 7,585,471 over 2,414,531, which is off by only 0.00003 percent. But it's still NOT PI.
So, what have we done here? Not much really. We didn't prove that pi is irrational, but I think any rational person would be inclined to accept it at this point. Picturing Irrationality
How about a visual demo? We can actually show that pi is irrational by swinging balls around in a circle. Here's how it works: First we start with a single ball moving at a constant speed.
Now let's add another ball on the end of that ball. It's moving in a circle with the same radius, but at a speed that is 3.5 times faster. Not only does this create a cool pattern, but at some point the pattern will repeat. If you keep your eye on the starting point on the right side, you can see when the ball begins to retrace its path:
You could try any ratio of speeds that evaluates to a finite decimal number, like the 3.5 above. In other words, rational numbers! 3.5 can be expressed as an integer fraction: 7/2. Each one will give you a different pattern, but for all rational numbers the pattern will eventually repeat.
So what happens when you use an irrational number for the speed? In the one below, I have the second ball moving at π times the speed of the first one:
See? The pattern never repeats . It's just like the never-ending series of digits in pi. It gets close, but it's still off by a little bit—you can see the lines begin to thicken. In fact, I let it run for a long time and this is what I got:
Because you can't write pi as a fraction of integers, the two circles will never sync back up. It's a cool way to show that pi is irrational, but it's also just fun to watch.

What exactly caused Happy to lose his swing, which forced him to walk away from the game that made him famous? What went wrong and for how long? And how exactly will he get back to his old form? If this movie leans into it's new elements more than its old ones it should still be a lot of fun. The cast certainly is a lot if fun. Farewell to Skype, the Technology That Changed My Life
Shortly after my mother's 89th birthday I called her landline via Skype. It was our last such communication ever. Don't worry, mom's fine. Skype, however, is as dead as the dire wolf. Deader, probably, because nobody is trying to figure out how to bring Skype back. My mother was born before humans discovered how to use antibiotics and she's still going. Skype was born in 2003 and only just made it past 20 years. Technological change is inevitable, but given the current manic pace of innovation, we are more accustomed to experiencing this as the arrival of shiny new tools, not the departure of useful (if slightly simplistic) old ones. When my grandmother was born, there were no planes. When my mother was born, there were no transistors. When I was born, there were no mobile phones. Those technologies are still going strong. In 2019 Skype was declared one of the top 10 most downloaded apps of the 2010s, above TikTok and YouTube and Twitter. That's only six years ago. I haven't even been to the gynecologist since then. Is there a word for the sense of loss you experience when you outlive a technology that changed your life? I know some people feel enough nostalgia for BlackBerrys and Sony Walkmans and even horse gas masks that they have become collectible, but when software goes, what remains? How do we memorialize and mourn a series of zeros and ones that opened a whole new world to us? I was just old enough when Skype came on the horizon to really appreciate it. As a traveler and an expatriate, I made a lot of long-distance phone calls. A way of reaching lovers, family, and friends when you needed to, long-distance calls had their own kind of romance, especially if you enjoyed having a conversation where every sentence you uttered cost you—and sometimes the person you were talking to—about two dollars. It made you measure your words. If your father was particularly frugal, as mine was, you'd never even try to sing all of 'Happy Birthday to You,' for example, for fear of ruining his whole year. In fact, what a long-distance call often consisted of was long pauses as people tried to think of things to say that were worth the money. In my family, we couldn't conjure conversation that rich fast enough, so we'd exchange pleasantries, hang up, and then curse ourselves for wasting money on such a nothing call. Friends of mine used to take notes before they called for maximum efficiency. In some countries I visited, you had to pay for a certain number of minutes first, hand over the number you wanted to call, and then go sit in a booth and wait to be connected. The pressure to fill those prepaid minutes with worthwhile content was intense. Skype was not the only solution to this. There were, briefly, specialized international calling companies where you could pick one or two countries and call them for a bargain rate of, say, 20 cents a minute. (Much of my phone conversation with my father during that era was spent marveling with him at how cheap it was.) But Skype was one of the earliest and easiest to use, and it called landlines for a few cents, so if you could not pry your beloved elders' hands away from their handsets, it was a godsend. Small talk was possible! You could digress! You could sing all of 'Happy Birthday to You' and get halfway through 'For He's a Jolly Good Fellow' before you realized that you actually didn't miss singing as much as you thought you did. Invented in 2003 by some now-billionaire northern Europeans, Skype, which used the internet rather than phone lines to connect people, was sold off to eBay in 2005, and eventually ended up at Microsoft, which is retiring it in favor of Teams. As technology goes, this is a familiar cycle: innovation, monetization, ruination. Skype is like that alt-rock group whose live concert was the first you ever saw, but who kept switching record labels and eventually disbanded. At least with a concert tour, you get a T-shirt. All we Skypers have is a vestigial blue S bubble on our phones. Perhaps Skype's appeal to the less technologically savvy was what doomed it. I only ever used Skype for one thing: to call my mother's landline. I didn't use it for messaging or video. It offered translation and payments and redesigns, all of which I ignored. I bristled when it briefly started sending me daily news items. I acknowledge my complicity in its demise. For me, Skype was like the BOOST button on my mother's telephone, which turns the volume up; it had a limited but crucial utility. Now Skype is gone. Though each of her descendants has tried to get her to use any of the communication methods invented after 1876, my mother still wants to pick up the receiver of a ringing phone, like she always has. For her, zooming is what cars do and FaceTiming is what folks used to call coming over for a cuppa. I will now call her (for free) through one of the other apps, which is only slightly more complicated and allows her to keep her feet planted in the technological era in which she feels safe. But it feels like the distance is getting wider, that the rubber cord between us is reaching the outer limit of its stretchiness. As digital communication grows more sophisticated, she seems older, farther away, less reachable. I can see and hear everybody else clearly, but mom is just a whisper. And I can't help worrying that it's not just inventions that cannot keep up that get abandoned sooner—it's people. I know Skype was just a stage, and pouting over its demise is like wishing cocoons never became butterflies, but still, I would have liked a T-shirt.

Seacoast Students of the Week for April 21 have fun while achieving great things
A student-athlete who formed a Girls Who Code club. A dedicated leader who tutors peers in math, science and German. A model student and positive influence with a great sense of humor. An honors student and runner who excels in math and chemistry and volunteers at a local soup kitchen. A top scorer in math competitions and musician taking a full slate of AP and college level courses. Meet the Seacoast Students of the Week for April 21. This week's students represent Portsmouth, York, Dover Spaulding and Oyster River High Schools. Seacoast Students of the Week are nominated by local principals, teachers and guidance counselors and, as you'll see below, they reflect a broad range of achievements in their schools and communities. It is our pleasure to introduce you to these outstanding students and we look forward to sharing stories of so many more of our wonderful students in the weeks ahead. All Seacoast-area public high schools have been invited to highlight their students' achievements each week. Here are the Seacoast Students of the Week for April 21, as described by the school leaders who nominated them: Portsmouth High School is excited to announce Isabella Fishteyn as its Seacoast Student of the Week. Isabella is a standout student who takes honors and dual enrollment classes as a sophomore. She has done outstanding work in her dual enrollment Python course. Isabella is kind, thoughtful, and curious. She helped create a Girls Who Code club to inspire, educate, and equip girls with computing skills to pursue 21st-century opportunities. Isabella runs the meetings; she organizes the activities, recruits the members, and often brings brownies. She also brings the fun because there is just as much laughing as coding. She and her peers have created a safe space for people of all experience levels. Isabella is also a member of our debate team, varsity tennis team and cross country. York High School is proud to recognize Kaitlyn Hatfield-Landry as its Student of the Week. A dedicated leader, scholar, and volunteer, Kaitlyn shines as an officer in the Young Women's Leadership group, where she actively engages with social issues impacting both our local community and the wider world. She is also an active volunteer through our YHS Interact group, a club dedicated to service and international understanding. In the classroom, Kaitlyn excels in our most challenging courses, all while generously giving her time as a peer tutor in math, science, and German. Her commitment to academic excellence and community service truly define her character, to the extent that she will soon be initiated into our National Honor Society. YHS is honored to have Kaitlyn as a Wildcat, and we can't wait to see the incredible impact she'll make in the future. This week, Dover High School recognizes senior Aiden Fiers. Aidan is respectful, collaborates well with his classmates, and completes all of his assignments in a timely and thorough manner. 'Aidan not only has excellent attendance, but he is also never tardy to my block 1 class. His projects are completed on time and with attention to detail. In my class of 9th-12th graders, Aidan has set himself apart as a role model for the other students. His 'get down to work' approach, sense of humor, and willingness to learn is remarkable. He has made such a positive impact on my classroom, he absolutely deserves to be recognized as Student of the Week. Aidan's work ethic, both inside and outside of school, and his leadership through modeling, have a positive impact on the school's culture. Ethan Proulx is an amazing senior who exemplifies academic excellence, leadership, and a strong commitment to community service. A dedicated member of the National Honor Society and French Honor Society, Ethan has also served on Class Council for the past four years, currently holding the role of treasurer. He is involved in Mu Alpha Theta and generously shares his knowledge as a math and chemistry tutor, helping peers succeed in challenging subjects. Ethan is also a proud member of the Student Athletic Leadership Team, has competed in track for the past three seasons, and participates in the ski club. Chenghao (Mike) Mo is a Senior at Oyster River High School who has never backed down from an academic challenge. He has a strong passion for math. He has been on the Math Team for two years and always shows up ready to compete in any category. Working with other members, he comes up with solutions and talks with his peers about various approaches to problems. He has been a top scorer in the Tri-State Math Leagues. It's no surprise, Mike has an interest in and knack for mathematics and the sciences, but across all disciplines he shows a natural propensity to be successful. He surpassed what ORHS has to offer in math and is now taking early college courses. He has also taken AP chemistry, AP calculus AB & BC, AP biology and AP economics. Among Mike's other talents, he is a very talented pianist who has joined band and jazz band. He exudes a positive outlook and has been a valuable addition to our band. This year, he has learned how to play the bells, xylophone and timpani and is a large part of the concert band's percussion section. Mike is a compassionate, sociable, and driven student who never shies away from contributing to even the most challenging class discussions. He works to encourage his peers and create a fun and supportive environment. Mike is the kind of person who lights up the room. Always cheerful and full of energy, his genuine happiness is contagious. He has a way of lifting spirits and making people feel seen, heard, and appreciated.
