Gangs in Haiti kill 4 soldiers and 4 civilians in bid to seize full control of the capital
Lionel Lazarre, spokesman for Haiti's National Police, told Radio Caraïbes that two soldiers and four civilians were killed in Kenscoff, a once peaceful community on the outskirts of the capital, Port-au-Prince. Two other soldiers and an undetermined number of civilians were killed in the community of Pacot inside the capital, he said.
On Wednesday night, the government said that at least four police officers and armed civilians from the community of Canapé-Vert, one of the few neighborhoods not controlled by gangs, were killed in the attacks.
In videos posted on social media, gunmen are seen mutilating several bodies and picking up severed heads as trophies, saying, 'We got the dogs.'
Haiti's transitional presidential council and the prime minister's office condemned the attacks in separate statements and said that multiple people were injured.
'The government reaffirms that the fight against insecurity remains its top priority,' the office said.
Gangs that control at least 85% of Port-au-Prince have launched recent attacks on previously peaceful areas that police and armed residents are trying to protect.
More than 260 people were killed in attacks on Kenscoff and Carrefour earlier this year, according to the U.N. political mission in Haiti.
Haitian police are working alongside a U.N.-backed mission led by Kenyan police to repel gangs, although they have struggled in their efforts. The mission is underfunded and only has some 1,000 personnel out of the 2,500 envisioned.
More than 5,600 people were killed in Haiti last year, with gang violence leaving more than one million people homeless, according to the U.N.

He said there was a girl, aged 10, among the victims as well as 10 men and 10 women but that figure has now risen. It comes after a woman, 20, was found dead on a bus with 26 iPhones glued to her body. Four of the 29 people injured in the crash later died in the hospital, said Fredrick Ouma Oluga, the principal secretary in charge of medical services in Kenya. The crash has shocked many in the region, sparking renewed calls for tougher road safety measures. Road accidents are common in Kenya and the wider East African region, where roads are often narrow and in poor condition with many potholes. Police often blame road accidents on speeding drivers. In another accident on Thursday, nine people were killed in a bus crash in the town of Naivasha in the county of Nakuru. The victims were among 32 workers going to work when the bus crashed at a railway crossing, police said. Meanwhile, a plane crash yesterday has left at least six people dead and two others injured after it went down in a residential area in Ruiru, Kiambu County, Kenya. The aircraft, a Cessna Citation XLS, belonged to AMREF Flying Doctors, which provides "fixed-wing air ambulance services" in Africa. It is not yet clear what caused the crash. Four people were onboard the plane at the time. The deceased include two doctors, two nurses and two members of public, according to the Kiambu County Commissioner. "At this time, we are cooperating fully with relevant aviation authorities and emergency response teams to establish the facts surrounding the situation," AMREF Flying Doctors CEO Stephen Gitau said. The Cessna took off from Wilson Airport in the Kenyan capital of Nairobi at 2:17pm and was on its way to Hargeisa, Somalia when it crashed. The Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA) said the aircraft lost radio and radar contact three minutes after it took off from Wilson Airport. Multiple homes were damaged near the crash site, which has a radius of around 100 metres.

A spokesperson for An Garda Síochána (Irish police) said they arrested a man in May 2025 "as part of an investigation conducted with Spanish police"."This man was charged and appeared before the courts," the spokesperson added.

A teenage British tourist was arrested after he allegedly tried to force himself into a 22-year-old Brit's hotel room and rape her in Tenerife's Playa de Las Americas resort A 16-year-old British tourist has been arrested after he allegedly tried to rape another UK holidaymaker in her hotel at a major holiday hotspot. The teenager supposedly attempted to enter the 22-year-old's room - who was staying at a resort next to the man in Tenerife - and tried to force himself on her by the room's door. The 16-year-old, who had flown to the island with his family, was held at the swimming pool of his hotel in the Playa de Las Americas resort. Detectives in Spain said the shock incident happened in "busy daylight hours" on July 31, in the Spanish tourist hotspot. Police said the teen fled the 22-year-old's hotel room after she resisted him and screamed over the alleged attack. They added that CCTV footage was used to track the alleged attacker down at the next-door resort. He has been remanded to a juvenile detention centre following an appearance at a youth court and banned from leaving Spain pending an ongoing investigation. A spokesman for Spain's National Police in Tenerife said today: "Officers have arrested a minor aged 16 as the alleged author of an attempted sex attack on July 31 at a hotel in the municipality of Arona. The quick work of officers led to his rapid location and arrest, preventing the possibility of further attacks. "The incident occurred at the door of one of the rooms of the hotel where the victim, aged 22, was approached by an individual who managed to sneak in behind her. "She resisted, screaming to raise the alarm, and managing to prevent the attacker from closing the door behind him who reacted by fleeing the scene. The attack happened in busy daylight hours in a busy part of the hotel. "CCTV cameras enabled the officers to reconstruct the events of that day and follow the suspect's movements so they could locate and arrest him at the pool of a nearby hotel. He was a guest there and on holiday with his family. "The youngster was handed over to a youth court judge. Given the severity of the allegations against him, he was remanded to a youth detention centre where he will remain in custody, without being afforded the possibility of leaving the island." A well-placed police source said: "Both the teenage boy and the woman are British. She was holidaying alone and he was with his family." He said the incident happened around 3pm on July 31. Another added: "The CCTV images police obtained showed this lad appeared to be on the prowl after entering a hotel he wasn't staying at. He didn't know the older woman. She was a complete stranger." The names of the hotels, which are next-door to each other on Avenida de Las Americas, have not been disclosed.
