This is Edinburgh's most exciting hotel opening of the summer

Take one time-worn Haymarket hotel, add new owners with deep pockets and oodles of design flair and what you've got is a buzzing, friendly, mid-budget boutique hotel in one of Edinburgh's most up-and-coming areas. Opened in June on the site of the old Grosvenor Hotel, the Hoxton group's 18th hotel is its first in Scotland. All the classic Hoxton trademarks are here: dynamic, tattooed staff; statement lighting, including a vintage Murano chandelier; a lobby lounge bar right by reception so you feel as if you're walking not into a hotel, but into a vibe. However, artworks (and fun keycards) by Scottish artists, Leith beers behind the bar and Irn Bru and Tunnock's tea cakes in your room add splashes of pleasing kilt. A brilliant Amalfi-style trattoria is an exciting addition to Auld Reekie's dining scene. This article contains affiliate links that will earn us revenue Score 8/10The hotel is effectively 11 Georgian townhouses knocked through into one, so there's a touch of the Tardis about your journey upstairs via grand staircases topped with ornate original cornicing to one of the 214 rooms. Biggy rooms are the best — high ceilings and tall sash windows add an elegant Georgian feel — but even Cosy rooms are spacious enough. Compared with Edinburgh's competitors, they punch above their price tag. Snug bunk rooms (from £188 room-only) and adjoining doubles are good for families; pastries and juice or a breakfast roll in bed is good for late risers. Decor throughout is a classic Hoxton palette of teal, rust and timber, with art deco velvet headboards, modernist light fittings and Smooth FM playing quietly on a Roberts radio. More hanging space and a suitcase stand would be useful, but the sound-proofing is superb. Excellent monsoon showers in sleek en suite bathrooms with the Hoxton's own subtly fragranced Blank toiletries. • 29 of the best hotels in Edinburgh Score 10/10The big draw is the shamelessly maximalist Patatino restaurant. Rustic bowls on the walls, a faux-vine centrepiece complete with fountain, hand-painted lemon-and-azure ceramic tables from Umbria — it's like a cross between the Ivy and a Sorrento trattoria. Infectiously enthusiastic Italian waiters and a brilliant maître d' from Lake Como add a winning hit of brio, flair and autenticita. With a set-up this good, the food needs to deliver — and mamma mia, it does. The menu is pleasingly spare: just five pasta dishes, four pizzas, some grilled fish and meats and a handful of classic starters. You can travel a long way in Italy without finding arancini this good, pork cheek ragu this rich, or panettone with rum and raisin ice cream so decadent. Our tip? Say yes to the oily, orangey amaro Montenegro digestivo. • 11 of the best restaurants in Edinburgh The lobby lounge — it's what Hoxton hotels are all about. Buzzing even on a Sunday night, it is busy again during (excellent) Monday breakfast, when a glam 'work club' group chats happily over discounted pastries and coffee. There are several areas off a central brass-panelled bar, with tables for digital nomads, sofas for groups of mates, and low-lit back room armchairs for lounging. Here with kids? Stick them in the five-person cinema off the bar and order yourself a well-priced cocktail from the hip, knowledgeable bar staff. • Read our full guide to Edinburgh Score 7/10Two minutes' walk from Haymarket station, eight minutes on the tram from the Mound on Princes Street, so it makes a solid, improbably quiet base, even during the festival. Haymarket is not the prettiest, but with Baillie Gifford moving in by the station, the interminable tramworks finally complete, and cool bars such as Ryan's and the Huxley drawing a hip young crowd, the neighbourhood is on the up. • Price B&B doubles from £200• Restaurant mains from £17• Family-friendly Y• Accessible Y• Dog-friendly Y Jeremy Lazell was a guest of the Hoxton Edinburgh (

US vice president JD Vance to stay with David Lammy as he holidays in Britain

US vice president JD Vance is to stay at David Lammy's grace and favour country house when he visits the UK on holiday this summer, reports suggest. Mr Vance and his family will begin their summer holiday this Friday with a stay at Chevening, the Foreign Secretary's Grade I-listed mansion in Kent, according to the Telegraph newspaper. The pair are said to have developed a warm friendship, bonding over their difficult childhoods and shared Christian faith. Mr Lammy is reported to have attended mass at the vice president's Washington residence during a visit in March, and now plans to repay the favour with the stay at his country home. The two are expected to hold a bilateral meeting before being joined by their families at Chevening. 'Lammy has visited Vance's family and the relationship looks like it will continue to grow on a personal as well as a professional basis,' a source told the Telegraph. The vice president and his family are also expected to visit Hampton Court Palace during their trip to the UK, the mainstay of which will be spent in the Cotswolds. Mr Vance's British holiday comes just weeks after Donald Trump travelled to Scotland, on a private visit his golf courses. There he also met with EU chief Ursula von der Leyen to agree a trade deal with the bloc, and with Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer. Mr Trump will return to the UK for a full state visit in September. The Foreign Secretary's burgeoning relationship with Mr Vance represents a political change of heart, as he was once an outspoken critic of Mr Trump. Mr Lammy described the US president as a 'racist and KKK/neo-Nazi sympathiser' when Labour was in opposition, but since coming to power has brushed off his remarks as 'old news'. Asked about Mr Vance's visit to the UK, a Foreign Office spokesman said: 'Ministerial engagements will be announced in the usual way.'
