NFL-targeting killer Shane Tamura took ‘big hits' to the head on high school football field, former teammate says

The NYC mass shooter who blamed the NFL for his apparent CTE brain injury did regularly take 'some big hits' on the field that left him 'looking empty,' a former high school teammate told The Independent. Shane Devon Tamura, 27, sprayed bullets from a M4 assault weapon at a Park Avenue office building Monday evening, killing four people including a cop before turning the gun on himself. Police found Tamura's body with a suicide note in his pocket that claimed he was suffering from chronic traumatic encephalopathy, a degenerative brain condition that has been linked to the head trauma regularly endured by those who participate in contact sports, such as football players. Tobenna Okunna, 28, a onetime defensive end who played with Tamura in high school in Santa Clarita, California, told The Independent that he remembered the player, who was 5'7' and 140 lbs at the time, taking regular blows to the head. 'It's hard to convey, but Shane was really fast, and ran really hard, and he was really small. So, all that speed and energy running into these massive people… I do remember Shane taking some big hits,' Okunna said in a phone call from his home in North Carolina Tuesday morning. Tamura 'had occasional moments of looking 'empty,' or spaced-out,' Okunna continued. 'We would commiserate about how high school is hard and stuff like that, [so] I just figured that whenever he had that look, he was just lost in thought… He did hit his head a lot, for sure.' Though Okunna described the killer as someone who could sometimes appear distracted, almost dazed, he was also 'a very normal guy, very kind and well-liked by a lot of people.' About seven or eight years ago, another member of the Golden Valley football squad posted an appeal on social media, requesting information about Tamura's whereabouts. 'I do remember people were worried about him, because he did sort of fall off the face of the earth for a few years,' Okunna said. 'I followed Shane on Instagram, he would post sparingly, maybe once a year or so. I knew he was alive and I knew he was doing something, somewhere.' Tamura was a standout running back for the Golden Valley Grizzlies during the 2014-2015 academic year. In 2015, Tamura transferred to Granada Hills Charter School in Los Angeles, where he played his senior year. The gunman, who held a Nevada private investigator's license that expired last year and had lately been working in casino security, had 'a documented mental health history,' New York City Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said Monday. New York City Mayor Eric Adams said Tuesday that Tamura 'appeared to have gone to the wrong floor,' and had in fact intended to attack the offices of the NFL located on the lower levels. 'We're still going through the suicide note to zero on in the exact reason but at this time it appears as if it's something attached to his belief he experienced CTE from the NFL,' Adams said in an interview. Despite the lofty claim, Tamura never played beyond the high school level. 'Terry Long football gave me CTE and it caused me to drink a gallon of antifreeze,' the disjointed note found in Tamura's pocket reportedly read. 'Study my brain please I'm sorry Rick I'm sorry for everything... You can't go against the NFL, they'll squash you.' In 2005, former Pittsburgh Steelers offensive lineman Terry Long took his own life by drinking a gallon of antifreeze. It was later discovered that he had been suffering from CTE. In the period leading up to Monday's bloodshed, Tamura was living with his parents, Michelle and Terrence, in Las Vegas. His older brother, Terrence Jr., also played football at Golden Valley HS and is now a petty officer in the U.S. Navy. Cops said Tamura drove his black BMW cross-country to Manhattan, arriving late Monday afternoon, then double-parked and strode into 345 Park Avenue, carrying an assault-style rifle in plain view, shortly before 6:30 p.m. In addition to the NFL offices, the office tower counts investment giant Blackstone, consulting powerhouse KPMG, and Rudin Management, a venerable local real estate firm which also owns the building, among its tenants. Tamura opened fire immediately upon entering the lobby, killing 36-year-old NYPD officer Didarul Islam, who was working off-duty, but in his police uniform, as a security guard. Blackstone identified one of its senior executives, Wesley LePatner, as among the dead. The other victims were identified as Rudin Management associate Julia Hyman, a 2020 Cornell University graduate, and Aland Etienne, a 'beloved' 46-year-old security guard. A fifth person – reportedly an NFL executive – was shot and injured, but survived. Tamura shot himself in the chest with the M4 rifle, authorities said. Investigators searched Tamura's car following the attack, and discovered two cellphones, medication, a loaded Colt Python .357 caliber revolver, and ammunition. Although Tamura had documented psychological issues, he was able to obtain a concealed carry permit in 2022 from the Las Vegas Metro Police Department. That same year, he was taken into custody on a mental health crisis hold; another would occur in 2024, law enforcement sources told ABC News. In June, a tipster at a gun show in Las Vegas notified law enforcement that Tamura had bought a suspiciously large amount of ammunition, along with an aftermarket trigger, the outlet reported. Las Vegas Police Department said Tuesday it was assisting the NYPD with its investigation. Tamura, who was arrested in Nevada in 2022 for trespassing, does not have a significant criminal record, authorities said. 'It's very sad, really tragic, and I'm also just sad for the victims and Shane's family also,' Okunna told The Independent. '... It was a real surprise, it's very odd. I don't know what would compel a person to do that.' The NYPD is leading the ongoing investigation, with assistance also coming from the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives.

New revelations emerge about NYC shooter's football career

The killer gunman who opened fire inside the Manhattan building that houses the NFL was once a promising high-school football player, it has been revealed. Authorities have identified Shane Tamura, a 27-year-old licensed private investigator from Las Vegas who once dreamed of a life in football, as the shooter who carried out a deadly rampage in the heart of New York City on Monday night. Tamura walked into the lobby at 345 Park Avenue in Midtown Manhattan and sprayed a long-form M4 rifle, shooting an NYPD officer in the back, before heading to the offices of Rudin Management on the 33rd floor and continuing the terrifying spree. He then took his own life, police have confirmed. At the time of writing four people have died after the shooting, including the officer who was working private security in the lobby. One other victim, an NFL employee, is stable in hospital on Monday night after being 'seriously injured' in the attack. As well as Rudin Management and investment management company Blackstone, the building at 345 Park Avenue is also home to the NFL headquarters, which is located on the fifth floor. Sources confirmed Tamura did not enter that floor, yet investigators are looking into into whether his motive was to target the NFL's offices given his past as a high-school football standout for Granada Hills Charter and Golden Valley in California. While he resided in Las Vegas, Tamura spent his high-school years in Los Angeles. He graduated from Granada Hills Charter, a Los Angeles Unified School District school located in the heart of the San Fernando Valley, in 2016. Prior to that he attended Golden Valley, which is further north in the Santa Clarita Valley. According to high-school sports statistics websites MaxPreps and Hudl, Tamura operated as a defensive back, running back and halfback throughout his career in junior varsity with both schools. In a video posted online from the 2015 season, he can be heard giving a post-game interview in which he spoke of a victory with the Granada Hills team. Shane, who was instrumental in the win after scoring several touchdowns, said in the video: 'We were down 10-0, stayed disciplined and came together as a team. Couple of touchdowns.' The 2015 season, Tamura's senior year, appears to have been his most successful as a high-school football star. He picked up six Player of the Game awards over the course of that campaign, while registering 126 carries for 616 rushing yards and five touchdowns in nine appearances. In terms of receiving, the 5ft 7in, 140-pound player also registered 25 catches for 229 yards and two touchdowns. Tamura also had 139 carries for 774 rushing yards and 11 touchdowns in 10 appearances for Golden Valley the season prior, as well as 16 catches for 103 receiving yards and a touchdown. It is unclear whether his football career continued after he graduated from Granada Hills Charter in 2016. has approached the school's athletics department for comment. Tamura eventually relocated to Las Vegas, where he earned a private investigator's license and obtained a concealed carry permit to carry firearms, both legally granted through Nevada's Sheriff's Department. The latter part of Tamura's life is largely invisible to the public. Investigators in both Nevada and New York are now urgently combing through his car, phone, and computer in search of answers to try and work out what stressors or perceived injustices led him to carry out Monday's deadly shooting. During a late night press conference NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch said the police found a rifle case with rounds, a loaded revolver, ammunition and magazines, as well as a backpack and medication prescribed to Tamura. 'Police want to know what brought him to that building, who or what the target was, and what the grievance or motive behind it might have been,' Miller explained. 'These cases often involve people who experience a downfall and begin to blame others - bosses, institutions, society at large. Then they decide to get even with everybody, even though in most cases, the problem is usually them,' Miller said. Investigators are also poring over Tamura's social media footprint, hoping it might offer clues - manifestos, threats, cryptic posts, or grievances that might have foreshadowed his violent act. As of now, police have not said whether Tamura had any personal or professional connection to the building or its tenants, but they are leaving no stone unturned. Authorities say there's no immediate evidence of any accomplices, but they are working methodically to verify that no other individual helped plan or facilitate his movements across state lines or into the high-security office tower. NFL employees were urged to 'hide' after Tamura stormed into the building and opened fire in both the lobby and the 33rd floor. According to ESPN's Jeff Darlington, a security alert sent to the league's employees read: 'Do not exit the building. Secure your location and hide until law enforcement clears your floor. Please switch phones to silent.' Photos posted online showed Tamura wearing a sport coat and button-down shirt while carrying the large rifle near the offices in Midtown Manhattan. He had a silencer on his massive weapon when he opened fire inside the lobby at around 6.30pm, with approximately 30 people inside.

Boil water advisory lifted for 3 Twin Cities suburbs following reported malfunction

A boil water advisory for three cities in the northwestern Twin Cities metro — Crystal, Golden Valley and New Hope — has been lifted, officials said Monday afternoon. The advisory was issued by the Joint Water Commission on Sunday morning due to what New Hope city officials reported as a malfunctioning valve in the Golden Valley water tower, which all three cities use. The issue resulted in a temporary loss of water pressure in the system. Golden Valley officials said in a news release on Monday that all residents and businesses can resume regular water use, though the Minnesota Department of Health recommends the following: Run cold-water faucets for five minutes or until the water is "noticeably colder." Throw away any existing ice from ice makers. Flush the feed lines of ice makers, hot water heaters, water coolers and any other water storage container with "at least one full tank volume." Clean water softeners and filters. Replace disposable filters. Officials said data about the incident is still being collected, and a "comprehensive update" will be released when more details are confirmed. Note: The video above originally aired July 13, 2025.

More than 500 homes to be built as part of Cheltenham's cyber hub

Plans for the second stage of a £1bn cyber security centre near GCHQ in Gloucestershire have been the proposals, 576 homes will be built at the Golden Valley development, which will create "thousands of jobs", property developers HBD of Cheltenham Borough Council's councillors questioned the amount of affordable homes and the reduced financial contributions for the improvements of Junction 10 of the MP Max Wilkinson who supports the scheme said: "It's an investment in our town's human capital and a commitment to securing its position as a national leader in a critical industry". "The projected £1bn in investment and promise of thousands of jobs underscores the scale of this opportunity and its capacity to deliver long-term economic benefits for local residents," he said the proposals present "a unique chance for Cheltenham to play a leading role in the nation's economic growth and strategic is the UK's intelligence agency focusing on communications data and areas such as cyber crime and infiltrating hidden messaging networks and works in conjunction with MI5 and told the meeting that the development is a "once-in-a-generation multi-million pound" project and had "the potential to secure GCHQ's presence in the town for another 50 years," according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service. Council officers asked for financial contributions totalling £9m and the authority would seek £3.7m for a primary school, £1.7m for motorway improvements and more than £900,000 for new bus was announced last month that development consent had been granted to a £229m project at Junction 10 of the M5 near Cheltenham mayor Bernie Fisher said he supported the scheme in principle, but was concerned about the funding of Junction 10, which he said will fall short without HBD's extra cash boost.
