Why do people cheat? Relationship coach decodes 7 possible reasons: 'Isn't always about sex'
Infidelity can be a complex issue, often stemming from deeper underlying factors. On May 6, Reka Dutka, a relationship coach, shared an Instagram post on how understanding the underlying causes of infidelity can help individuals and couples address the root issues and work towards healing and growth. In her post titled 'Why do people cheat', Reka shared possible reasons, writing: 'Cheating rarely comes out of nowhere. It is often a symptom of something deeper, not just in the relationship, but in the person who cheats.'
She went on to list 'the main emotional or mental states that commonly lead people to cheat': 1. Avoidant emotional repression
Reka said, 'They don't know how to sit with discomfort, communicate unmet needs or deal with conflict. Instead of leaning in, they escape. (Not to be confused with being dismissive or fearful avoidant).' 2. Low self-worth or validation seeking
'Some people use attention or sex as a way to feel desirable, seen or alive, especially if they have tied their self-worth to external validation,' she said. 3. Resentment and emotional buildup
'Instead of speaking up about their pain, they silently resent. They act out that resentment by cheating as a form of self-righteous sabotage,' Reka added. 4. Addiction, trauma or impulsive issues
She said, 'For some, cheating is less about the relationship and more about dysregulation. They use sex or thrill to escape themselves.' 5. Entitlement or lack of empathy
Reka added, 'Some people genuinely believe they deserve to do what they want and minimise the impact of their actions. (This can be narcissistic, but not always).' 6. Fantasies of freedom
She further said, 'People in long-term relationships sometimes cheat to rebel against feeling 'trapped' even if the trap is just emotional intimacy they are afraid of.' 7. Core truths
'Most cheating happens in a moment of disconnection: from the partner, from the relationship, or from oneself. Cheating says more about the cheater's inner world than the partner's worth,' Reka shared. Cheating can be about pain or unmet needs
She concluded, 'Someone else's betrayal is not a reflection of your worth. It is a reflection of their own disconnection from themselves and their inability to communicate or choose differently. If you have been cheated on, you are allowed to grieve. You are allowed to feel angry, shattered and confused. But you also deserve to heal in a way that does not involve blaming yourself.'
Reka's caption read, 'Cheating isn't always about sex. Sometimes it's about pain, emotional disconnection, unmet needs, or trying to feel something when we've gone numb. This post isn't about justifying betrayal. It's about understanding the why beneath the behaviour. Because when we understand the root, we stop repeating the same painful cycles.'

Video: Bengaluru Auto Driver Screams At Woman Over Fare, Demands She Speak Kannada
In recent times, the Kannada language row in Karnataka has sparked significant debate, particularly in Bengaluru, a city known for its multicultural population. While advocates suggest people learn the language, claiming it's a way of respecting the local culture, critics argue that such a demand is exclusionary in a cosmopolitan setting. Now, a video of a heated argument between a woman and a Bengaluru auto rickshaw driver has reignited the language debate online. Taking to Instagram, user Anya S shared a video in which the auto driver is seen speaking in Kannada in a visibly aggressive tone. She said that the argument between the two began after the driver demanded Rs 390 for a ride that, according to her Rapido app, was supposed to cost Rs 296. In the video, Anya repeatedly tells the driver that she will pay what the app says. "Don't scream at me. I'll only pay what the app says," she says. However, as the driver continues to scream at her, she calls over another auto-rickshaw driver, saying, "Aap yahan aao, mujhe darr lag raha hai (Come here, I'm feeling scared)." The driver, on the other hand, becomes aggressive, demanding that she speak Kannada. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Anya S (@anyadamnson) In the caption, Anya recounted the entire incident. "This isn't about refusing to learn the local language - of course I want to learn Kannada. But when people behave like this, it makes me question myself. It makes me think, why should I make the effort when they don't know how to treat me with basic respect?" she wrote. "I calmly told him I'd pay what the app showed. Rs 296. That's it. But he began shouting. He stepped in, came close - trying to intimidate me, scare me. He mocked me for speaking Hindi. Told me I had no right to be here if I didn't speak Kannada. But this wasn't about language. This was about entitlement, aggression, and disrespect," Anya continued. She further made it clear that she wasn't against paying extra when deserved. "I'm someone who happily pays extra when I've had a good ride. But not when someone tries to bully or threaten me into it," she wrote. "We're part of this city. We live here, we work here, we contribute to its economy. And that means we deserve fairness, dignity, and safety - no matter what language we speak. If you've ever felt unsafe or second-guessed yourself in moments like this - you are not wrong. You are not alone. And you have every right to say no," she concluded. As the video gained traction online, ride-hailing app Rapido responded, assuring action. "At Rapido, customer safety and dignity are our highest priorities, Anya... the reported captain has been permanently barred from our platform. Additionally, we are working on implementing stronger protocols for our captains to prevent such incidents in the future," the company commented. Bengaluru locals also responded to the clip. One user wrote, "As a proud Kannadiga, I want to apologize for the unacceptable behavior of some individuals who are tarnishing our reputation and that of South India. I recommend exploring alternative transportation options like Yulu electric scooters, buses, and metros. On behalf of all educated Kannadigas, we extend our sincerest you're safe and okay." "Last resort when they get caught is speak in Kannada , these unruly autodrivers don't represent Karnataka and our Kannada . They behave the same with Kannadigas too," commented another.

'Heartbeat Of The House': Air India 171 Flight Attendant Was Set For Wedding, Family Shattered
Last Updated: Several dreams were turned to ashes with the crash of Air India 171 on Thursday afternoon. One such story came to fore about the flight attendant Roshni Songhare. The Air India 171 plane's crash in Ahmedabad turned several dreams and stories to ashes as the aircraft fell from the sky shortly after taking off for London on Thursday afternoon. All on board, except a British national, died in the fatal crash, which shook the entire country and the world. One such story has now come to the fore about one of the flight attendants on the ill-fated flight – Roshni Songhare. Hailing from Rajaji Path in Dombivli town of Maharashtra's Thane district, she was about to add a new chapter in her life with her wedding next year. She was about to tie the knot with a merchant navy officer in March 2026. Preparations for the same had already begun in her family, which has now been left with silence and memories. Roshni, 26, had left her home just three days before the flight, excited for an international trip as a flight attendant, as usual, but this time from Ahmedabad to London. With the news of the crash, her 50-year-old father Rajendra, mother Shobha, and younger brother Vignesh were left completely shattered. 'She was the heartbeat of this home. We were getting her engaged in November and married in March. Time played cruelly with her," a close relative told reporters. The Songhare family was a native of Mandangad in coastal Ratnagiri district; however, had moved to Mumbai for work and then shifted to Dombivli two years ago. Roshni's father had worked tirelessly to educate both his children. She pursued and completed a flight attendant course. She began her career with SpiceJet and later switched to Air India, where she opted for international assignments, her family members said. 'She was so happy to be flying again. We were all looking forward to her wedding. Everything was going right," said her uncle Praveen Sukhdere. As soon as news of the plane crash broke, Roshni's family tried to contact her. When they couldn't reach her, panic set in. Her father and brother rushed to Ahmedabad, clinging to hope. Roshni's fiancé, an officer in the merchant navy from Guhagar taluka and currently based in Thane, had met her through a family connection. 'She was finally getting everything she had worked so hard for," a neighbour said. Besides being a flight attendant, she was also a social media influencer with over 54,000 Instagram followers. Her account is now filled with messages of condolences. 'You flew high, Roshni. You just flew a little too far," a message read. (With PTI inputs) First Published: June 14, 2025, 14:04 IST
