It's been quite a wait for coffee fans. Signs have been suggesting Black Sheep Coffee were opening a cafe at Broughton shopping centre for some two years.
But on Thursday the chain - with branches around the UK - finally flung open their doors. Judging by the response so far it's clear that it's set to be a success.
Franchise owners - and husband and wife team - Haris Mirza and Saba Jamshed will run the cafe - in addition to one they operate in Preston. Hari, 41, told me their Preston one took a year to be as popular as this Flintshire one is now so the future looks positive. Haris said what makes Black Sheep Coffee is different is its Robusta coffee naturally contains twice as much caffeine as normal Arabica coffee beans but in a good way. It's less acidic and it's more chocolatey and nutty so it's got the right notes.
"It's what drove me to open this cafe," he says. "I was literally just a customer like anyone else. I would just go and buy a regular mocha and then I just ended up taking on the franchise.

"The Robusta coffee beans come from India and the equivalent of the Arabica beans - which is the Blue Volcano which is fruitier - come from Colombia. There are other coffees as well.
"There are so many options to customise - different syrups like hazelnut. caramel....., and whipped cream."
Haris says it's a friendly place where staff including him and his wife chat to customers. Customers order at the front, pay at the next counter and collect at the far end.

The orders are made on one of three touch screens, much like in McDonald's or M&S cafes. There are lots of bagels, sandwiches and croissants and the like.
The meal deals looked good. I went for a Chicken & chorizo farmhouse sandwich, flapjack (in a plastic wrapping) and cappuccino. The drink is from their "Blue Volcano" range and I went for added caramel.
It's quite strong and rich and exactly what it's difficult to make at home. There were many Matcha drinks too. Matcha means finely-ground powder of green tea which can be added to milk, water or another drink.
While here I had one with lemonade. It tastes rather like Lilt or 7UP, from back in the day, without the fizziness. And while it looks somewhat unappetising it tastes sweetish and light, and with some ice, it was a refreshing pick me up on a warm and muggy day.

The Chicken & chorizo sandwich was on fresh bread and with a cottage cheese filling. That made it lovely and moist and it was delicious.
I would have preferred the flapjack not to be in wrapping and to be a bigger square on a plate from the counter. But it was soft and fruity and a lovely snack.
The decor was unpretentious, like the Black Sheep Coffee cafe I'd been to in Cardiff. This one has exposed, ventilation ducts, faux distressed plank flooring, breeze blocks and corrugated metal on one wall. They give it an industrial look.

The grey artwork personalises this branch. Striking images of two racehorses presumably hurtling around the Roodee circuit (Chester Racecourse) and Roman Chester city walls are a nice choice.
It's the first Black Sheep Coffee branch in North Wales - between Clogau and Lush at Broughton retail park. And with a relatively captive audience it should do well.
The facts
Location: Black Sheep Coffee, Broughton retail park, Flintshire CH4 0DE.
Food: Tasty and fresh with imaginative coffees, shots and Matcha teas.
Service: Friendly and efficient
Atmosphere: Unfussy and relaxed.
The bill: Chicken & chorizo farmhouse sandwich, cappuccino with caramel shot and fruit and seed flapjack: £9.38.
Verdict: A little piece of cosmopolitan life from a household chain now in North Wales too.

Glasgow council not reimbursed for demolition of India buildings

Demolition of the site on Bridge Street, which had floors missing over five storeys, started in April last year with the final cost expected to be at least £1 million. During Thursday's full council meeting, councillor Stephen Docherty asked if the council had been reimbursed yet for the work but was advised by the convenor of Housing, Development Built Heritage and Land Use that the money had not yet been acquired. (Image: India Buildings) READ NEXT: This check will happen before Clyde Tunnel toll charge could be rolled out READ NEXT: Lout caused havoc in Glasgow McDonald's while holding scissors Councillor Ruairi Kelly said: 'At this stage the council has not yet been reimbursed for the India Building on Bridge Street which took place in April last year. 'The site comprises three interconnected buildings constructed at different times with only the Oxford Street section remaining. The demolition of the two older buildings was carried out under emergency powers due to safety concerns. 'Ownership of the site is complex, involving multiple parties and title transfers, some of which are still in probate potentially. 'This has raised questions around the fairer apportionment of demolition costs, particularly whether owners of parts of the remaining building had no stake in the demolished section should bear any liability. 'A charging order under the Building (Scotland) Act 2003 is being prepared to secure the debt once these legal and ownership matters are resolved. 'This order once registered allows the council to recover costs with interest over time. We're also continuing to press the owners to carry out essential repairs to the remaining Oxford Street building which remains partially unsafe and unoccupied. 'The site is part of an ongoing discussion within the North Laurieston masterplan and there was a really good public session on that and we remain committed to ensuring public safety while perusing all available avenues for cost recovery.'

Throwback Edinburgh '90s McDonald's voucher shows how much things have changed

Our community members are treated to special offers, promotions and adverts from us and our partners. You can check out at any time. More info A rediscovered McDonald's voucher from the mid 90s has revealed how much things have changed over the years. A photograph of a voucher offering two Big Macs or McChicken Sandwiches for £2 has been shared by an Edinburgh local after it was found in the back of a drawer. The image of the retro voucher shows it was valid until August 31, 1995. Locals were able to use the ticket at any McDonald's store in the capital after 10.30am. The chain was open seven days a week from 8am until late. Some 30 years on, it would almost seem unimaginable to get two burgers for £2 with a single Big Mac costing £5.59 in 2025. While one McChicken sandwich now costs a mere £4.99. Back in 2023, we reported a menu from the early 1990s has several items that surely would be welcomed back by today's customers. A photograph of the McDonald's menu pinned to a wall at a branch was taken in 1993 and contains some surprise items. Back then you could see a Big Mac on the menu for £1.79 while a Quarter Pounder with cheese would cost £1.81. You could enjoy a large Triple Thick Milkshake for just £1.14 but if you wanted to take it away, it was only 97p. There were also three sizes of French Fries. The large would set you back £1.05, the medium 84p, while the regular would be a mere 57p. But perhaps some of the most interesting things from the menu are what you can no longer buy at McDonald's in 2023. First, the British class, a strawberry trifle described as "a fresh cream trifle with rich strawberry fruit jelly and sponge on a layer of dairy cream custard with rosettes of fresh cream." Join Edinburgh Live's Whatsapp Community here and get the latest news sentstraight to your messages. It's not known exactly what year McDonald's decided to take trifle off the menu but one online commenter who said they picked one up at an airport in 1993 remembered it being "surprisingly tasty". Another lost item includes the McDonald's Big Breakfast, which consisted of a buttered muffin, a hash brown, a sausage patty as well as scrambled egg all for just £1.29. The landmark restaurant on Edinburgh's Princes Street opened in 1988, and since then the famous franchise has launched outlets all across the city.
