Germany vs. Italy: UEFA Nations League Preview

Yahoo23-03-2025

Julian Nagelsmann's Germany seek to secure passage to the 2024/25 UEFA Nations League semi-finals on Sunday evening. The German national team will play before a full capacity crowd of 81,365 live spectators at Signal Iduna Park. Nagelsmann's team enter the second leg of the quarter-final tie with Italy carrying a 2-1 aggregate goal lead from Thursday's fixture at the San Siro.
Nagelsmann's second half tactical tweaks enabled the Germans to overcome a 0-1 half-time deficit in the previous match. It stands to reason that influential second half subs Tim Kleindienst and Nico Schlotterbeck will feature in the starting XI this time. Kleindienst scored the equaliser shortly after coming on. Schlotterbeck looks set to start in the stadium of his Bundesliga club, Borussia Dortmund.
Germany initially lined up in a 4-2-2-2 formation against Italy on Thursday. Nagelsmann clearly aimed to give Mainz call-ups Nadiem Amiri and Jonathan Burkardt a formal audition together. When this went awry, the Bundestrainer switched to a 4-2-3-1/5-4-1 hybrid at the half. Schlotterbeck – on for a weak David Raum at the half – filled in at left-back.
Speaking at a DFB press conference on Saturday, Nagelsmann singled out Schlotterbeck for praise. After not mentioning Schlotterbeck at all during his initial post-match comments, the Bundestrainer plainly stated that 'Nico was the difference' in his latest public comments. It's quite possible that the Dortmund professional will get another audition at left back.
An alternate scenario in which Schlotterbeck still starts could see the BVB man work alongside Jonathan Tah and Antonio Rüdiger in a back-three. In this case, Joshua Kimmich would move into his preferred midfield position alongside close friend and teammate Leon Goretzka in midfield. Schlotterbeck could also replace Tah – who has been in weak form recently – outright.
With Amiri looking uncomfortable on the second attacking axis on Thursday, Nagelsmann finds himself in need of another winger. Both Karim Adeyemi and Jamie Leweling had their moments in late relief shifts off the bench. The former nevertheless demonstrated a bit more pace.
Given how spectacularly Adeyemi began the year with the German U21s (before getting injured) a start for another Dortmund man seems plausible. Leweling might start if Nagelsmann opts to give his VfB Stuttgart teammate Maximilian Mittelstädt a go at left-back. In that case Leroy Sané will remain on the right.
In total, GGFN projects three BVB starters.
Oliver Baumann – Joshua Kimmich, Antonio Rudiger, Jonathan Tah, Nico Schlotterbeck – Pascal Groß, Leon Goretzka – Leroy Sané, Jamal Musiala, Karim Adeyemi – Tim Kleindienst

Liverpool up their bid for Bayer Leverkusen's Florian Wirtz to £113m

Liverpool have increased their offer for Florian Wirtz to £113m in an attempt to seal a club record deal for the Bayer Leverkusen attacking midfielder. The Premier League champions had a £109m bid for the Germany international rejected last weekend but, following further talks between the two clubs, have submitted a new package that would guarantee Leverkusen £100m plus £13m in add-ons. The offer, however, still falls short of the German club's £126m valuation and Liverpool appear unwilling to meet their asking price. Negotiations will continue in an attempt to conclude what would be Liverpool's record transfer. Wirtz has made it clear he is keen to complete a move to Anfield and Liverpool are confident a deal will be struck for the coveted 22-year-old.

Liverpool submits new Florian Wirtz transfer bid as huge fee emerges

Liverpool has made an improved bid to German side Bayer Leverkusen in the pursuit of talented attacking midfielder Florian Wirtz, hoping to end a protracted transfer saga that started in mid-May. In the late evening on Friday night UK-time, Paul Joyce of the Times reports the Reds have upped their anti to £113 million ($153 million) — £100 million ($135 million) base and up to £13 million ($18 million) in add-ons. Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano didn't add any further information in the same time window but quote-tweeted an earlier post with a handful of emojis. Advertisement 'Liverpool are advancing to complete Wirtz deal in next days, here we go soon," he wrote earlier in the day. "Negotiations at final stages with details being sorted then Wirtz will travel for medical, plan confirmed." Jack Grealish needs regular football for World Cup consideration

Thomas Tuchel loves Jack Grealish but says the out-of-favour Manchester City star needs to find regular football to force his way back into the England reckoning ahead of the World Cup. The 29-year-old has found minutes hard to come by at the Etihad Stadium this season and been overlooked for both squads since the German coach took charge. Advertisement Tuchel said he loved Grealish's personality, courage and quality after leaving him out in March due to a lack of game-time, with the attacking midfielder making just six City appearances since then. Grealish has found minutes hard to come by at the Etihad Stadium this season (Martin Rickett/PA) City manager Pep Guardiola is reportedly set to leave the former Aston Villa player out of his Club World Cup squad and a summer exit appears on the cards. England boss Tuchel said: 'My thoughts are still the same. I love Jack for his personality and of course his talent. 'He is a very unique player who can handle big pressure on the field. He is never shy of pressure. It's the opposite. 'He grows in big matches but he's a player who needs minutes and minutes and minutes and simply does not get them for a very long time. That's basically everything. Nothing has changed. Advertisement 'I have maybe the same information as you that City are thinking of not taking him to the Club World Cup, so he needs to make himself available by playing. I think it's one of his key strengths. 'To go every three days and get better and better with every minute that he has in his legs – that's what is missing, nothing else. 'I have spoken to him after the first international camp and very shortly after the FA Cup final but not since then.' There are no City players in England's squad for June's double-header, but nine of the group are heading to the Club World Cup. Tuchel said he was not overthinking that aspect and, just like he did at the squad announcement, stressed that international matters took precedence. Advertisement Asked if clubs had requested players did not feature in both Saturday's qualifier against Andorra and the Senegal friendly on Tuesday, he said: 'No one has asked me that question. 'I said also many times, I was like 15 years I think in club football, I think I have never asked an international coach what to do and how to use the players. 'We have very limited time for ourselves. We have our very own interest also to see a lot of the players that are in camp and maybe even all of the players that are in camp, so we have an own interest to mix the teams. 'But no coach has called me and there was no request from the FA that a club called. Advertisement 'We know the clubs have a lot of matches and the players go after to the Club World Cup. 'But it can also happen that some players start twice for us, but like I said, we also have an interest to see a lot of players in these two matches, so I think we will not in the end upset anyone.' Bukayo Saka might not be risked against Andorra as he recovers from a knock (Bradley Collyer/PA) Another player heading to the Club World Cup is Liam Delap, who is going there with new club Chelsea rather than leading the line for England Under-21s at the Euros. 'It would have been nice for him and for the FA for him to play a big tournament, but that's nowadays football,' said Tuchel, who may not risk Bukayo Saka against Andorra as he recovers from a knock. 'There are some rules and its club first. It would have been nice to do the 21s and would have been nice to see him lead the under-21s as the main striker.'
