Rajkot: Work-from-home might have helped IT companies save on overhead expenses, but in Jamnagar, it nearly cost a software company its business. A seasoned software engineer used the comfort of working from home as an excuse not just to steal sensitive company data but also to quietly launch a competing company. On the complaint lodged by Rajesh Bhimani, proprietor of SNTG IT Services Pvt Ltd, the cybercrime police arrested Manish Bharadwa, an IT engineer with 10 years of industry experience. The investigation revealed that Bharadwa, a trusted employee of Bhimani, launched the company in connivance with the firm's former staffer. They registered the firm in the names of their wives. Investigators said Bhimani's company developed special software to enable deaf people to do banking. The company also has an office in Ahmedabad with around 40 employees. Six months ago, Bhimani requested a work-from-home option, citing personal reasons and plans to relocate to Vadodara. Trusting his long service, the company allowed the request and provided him with a system containing sensitive data, including customer records spanning 10 years, proprietary software source codes, and design formulas. When asked for an explanation via email about the status of the company-issued computer, including its location and any unauthorised access or data transfers, Bharadwa appeared at the Jamnagar office the next day. He returned the system without undergoing proper handover protocols or allowing the company's IT team to examine it on the spot. Upon inspection, company engineers discovered that an external device was used on the system and sensitive data was copied. Further investigation revealed Bharadwa allegedly set up a proxy server, raising concerns of continued misuse. Inspector I A Ghasura of the Jamnagar cybercrime police said, "The complainant feared that Bharadwa could mentally or financially harm customers and damage the company's interests using stolen data. " Explaining the modus operandi, officials said, "Source code is like the blueprint of a customized software and mostly an intellectual property. Along with the data, the accused secretly copied the software's source code onto an external device. This is a serious cybersecurity fraud." Bharadwa was booked under section 316(6) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for criminal breach of trust, along with relevant sections of the Information Technology Act.

Court fines plaintiffs for abuse of law in property ownership suits
Ahmedabad: A city civil court on Thursday imposed a fine of Rs 25,000 each on the plaintiffs in two separate civil suits for attempting to wrongfully obtain ownership declarations for properties located in the Maninagar area. One suit was filed by two brothers, Pratap Davda and Naresh Davda, while the other was filed by M C Thomas. Both had named Lalabhai Bharwad as a defendant in their respective suits. The plaintiffs claimed that they had purchased the properties in 1995 and had been in undisturbed possession ever since. Bharwad also stated that the plaintiffs — the Davdas and Thomas — had purchased the properties from him through notarised documents. All parties acknowledged that the plaintiffs had been occupying the properties for over 30 years.
