"Mutual respect, understanding will continue to guide our nations": Bangladesh's Chief Advisor appreciates PM Modi's message on Eid al-Adha
He expressed confidence that the spirit of mutual respect and understanding would continue to guide the two nations in working together for the well-being of the people of India and Bangladesh.
'I deeply appreciate your thoughtful message, kind greetings and warm wishes on the occasion of Eid-ul-Azha, which reflects the shared values between our two countries. I also would like to convey my warmest greetings to you, and through you, to the people of India on this auspicious occasion,' Yunus wrote in a letter to PM Modi on June 6.
Yunus shared his letter and PM Modi's letter on X. He called Eid al-Adha a time of reflection that brings communities together in the spirit of festivity, generosity, unity, and sacrifice. He wished PM Modi and the people of India good health, happiness, peace, progress, and prosperity.
'Eid-ul-Azha is a time of reflection, which brings communities together in the spirit of festivity, sacrifice, generosity and unity, and inspires us all to work together for the greater benefits of the people across the world. I am confident that the spirit of mutual respect and understanding will continue to guide our nations to work together for the well-being of our peoples. On this blessed occasion, I wish you, Excellency, good health and happiness and the people of India peace, progress, and prosperity,' he wrote in a letter to PM Modi.
His response came after PM Modi extended wishes to Yunus and the people of Bangladesh on Eid al-Adha on June 4 and termed the festival an 'integral part of the rich and diverse cultural heritage of India.' He noted that millions of Muslims in India celebrate Eid al-Adha with immense joy and brotherhood.
In the letter to Yunus, he stated, 'On behalf of the people and the Government of India, I convey warm greetings to you and the people of Bangladesh on the auspicious occasion of Eid al-Adha. This holy festival is an integral part of the rich and diverse cultural heritage of India and is celebrated with immense joy and fervour by millions of people of Islamic faith across the country. It reminds us of the timeless values of sacrifice, compassion and brotherhood, which are essential in building a peaceful and inclusive world. I take this opportunity to extend my best wishes for your good health and well-being.'

Eid al-Adha, also known as the Festival of Sacrifice, commemorates Prophet Ibrahim's willingness to sacrifice his son in obedience to God. The day is marked by prayers, charitable acts, and the ritual sacrifice of animals, with a message of sharing and empathy at its core.
Earlier in April, PM Modi met Bangladesh Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus on the sidelines of the BIMSTEC Summit in Bangkok and reiterated India's support for a democratic, stable, peaceful, progressive and inclusive Bangladesh. PM Modi underlined India's concerns related to the safety and security of minorities in Bangladesh, including Hindus, and expressed his expectation that the Bangladesh government would ensure their security, including by thoroughly investigating the cases of atrocities committed against them, according to a Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) release.
In a press release, MEA stated, 'Prime Minister reiterated India's support for a democratic, stable, peaceful, progressive and inclusive Bangladesh. Enunciating India's people-centric approach to the relationship, Prime Minister highlighted that cooperation between the two countries has brought tangible benefits to the people of both countries. He underlined India's desire to forge a positive and constructive relationship with Bangladesh based on pragmatism.'
'Prime Minister urged that rhetoric that vitiates the environment is best avoided. On the border, strict enforcement of the law and prevention of illegal border crossings, especially at night, are necessary for maintaining border security and stability. Bilateral mechanism could meet as appropriate to review and take forward our ties,' it added.
PM Modi expressed his conviction that all issues of mutual interest between India and Bangladesh would continue to be addressed and resolved bilaterally through constructive discussions, in the interest of their long-standing and mutually beneficial bilateral relationship. (ANI)

Last Updated: The National Sports Governance Bill is more than a law—it is the ushering of a new era for Indian sports—a plan to win consistently on the world stage & create a pipeline of talent India stands at the cusp of a sporting revolution. The National Sports Governance Bill, 2025, passed by Parliament, is not just a legislation—it's the most transformational reform in the last 50 years, aimed towards improving sports administration, ushering in transparency, giving athletes a voice and increasing our chances of hosting the 2036 Olympic Games. For decades, Indian sports suffered from opaque administration, vested interests, corruption and a lack of accountability. This law, shepherded by Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya and conceived by the Modi government, promises to transform India's sporting ecosystem by bringing in a global standard and athlete-centric governance. It is the most decisive step towards making India a sporting powerhouse. Indian sports have long been shackled by misgovernance. The 2010 Commonwealth Games scandal laid bare the rot—federations operating as personal fiefdoms, elections marred by disputes, funds misused and athletes sidelined from decision-making. The absence of a national and codified legal framework allowed power hungry, corrupt administrators to cling to power, while stifling talent and real progress. The National Sports Governance Bill, 2025, is a game-changer that will create a National Sports Board (NSB)—a central regulator to recognise and oversee national and state sports federations, with powers to derecognise non-compliant bodies, thereby ensuring accountability. There will be a National Sports Tribunal (NST), a dedicated quasi-judicial body, modelled on the lines of international Court of Arbitration for Sport, to resolve disputes swiftly bypassing lengthy court battles. A Sports Election Panel will ensure transparent, fair elections with vetted and fair returning officers and this will end electoral malpractices. Age and tenure limits will ensure lifelong control by administrators becomes a thing of the past. Athlete and women's representation has been mandated with at least two athletes and four women on every 15-member executive committee, ensuring nearly 30 per cent representation for each group. It also introduces a Safe Sports Policy to protect women and minors from harassment or abuse, and requires Ethics/Anti-Doping Committees so India meets international integrity standards. These provisions together dismantle the old guard's stranglehold and align India's sporting ecosystem with global governance norms. The New Sports Bill is pro-athlete, pro-women and pro-youth by placing athletes, women and youth at the heart of governance. By mandating Athlete Commissions and reserving leadership roles for players, it ensures those who compete on the field can shape decisions too. For the first time, India's athletes will have a formal voice reversing decades of administrator-dominated management. With roughly 30 per cent of leadership positions reserved for women, there will be gender equality in a historically male-dominated domain. For 65 per cent of our youth, this law creates a meritocratic ecosystem, free from political control. Coupled with initiatives of PM Modi's government like Khelo India, which has established over 1,000 training centers and supports thousands of young athletes with scholarships, the law ensures a pipeline of sportspersons from grassroots to podium. In the Modi-era, sports programmes have turned Khel into a mass participatory movement or Jan Abhiyan and Andolan. Finally, the Sports Bill will ensure that India's sports governance matches global leaders like the UK, USA and Japan. By codifying Olympic Charter principles and World Anti-Doping Agency guidelines, it ensures compliance with international norms. Transparent elections and ethics oversight minimise the risk of international sanctions, enabling India to bid confidently for events like 2036 Olympics. Since 2014, PM Modi has been pushing sports into a national mission mode. Schemes like TOPS & Khelo India support hundreds of elite and budding athletes and have democratised access to world class training and resources. The sports budget has surged 130.9 per cent from a paltry Rs 1,643 crore in 2014–15 to Rs 3,794 crore in 2025–26. Infrastructure upgrades are also taking place simultaneously. PM Modi's vision—to change the attitude towards non-cricket sports and athletes—has made it a viable and respectable career. In the last decade, India's medal haul has soared: 107 medals (28 gold) at the 2022 Asian Games, 61 medals (22 gold) at the 2022 Commonwealth Games and a record 29 medals at the 2024 Paris Paralympics. Over 30,000 illegal Afghans repatriated from Pakistans Quetta
Quetta [Pakistan], August 13 (ANI): Over 30,000 Afghan nationals illegally residing in Quetta division have been repatriated to Afghanistan in less than a month, official sources told Pakistani government had set a deadline of July 31 for all illegal Afghans living in Pakistan to return to their home country. While many refugees complied after the deadline, a significant number remained, prompting authorities to launch legal action against those who ignored the order, Dawn teams comprising police, Frontier Corps, FIA, and district administration were formed to take action against undocumented Afghans, Dawn Tuesday, a meeting chaired by Quetta division commissioner Shahzeb Khan Kakar reviewed the ongoing crackdown on illegal Afghans in the province. The meeting was attended by deputy commissioner of Quetta retired Captain Meharullah Badini, assistant commissioner Kaleemullah, and representatives from police, FIA, NADRA, special branch, PTA, home department, and other relevant agencies. Deputy commissioners of Qila Abdullah and Pishin, as well as the SP of Pishin, joined the meeting online, according to informed the meeting that coordination between agencies had been strengthened to accelerate the operation against illegal Afghans. The commissioner instructed the teams to conduct daily operations targeting undocumented Afghans and to collect records of all illegal residents' bank accounts and mobile SIMs. He emphasized the importance of involving local elders and community leaders to ensure the repatriation process proceeds peacefully, Dawn further directed that special care must be taken regarding women and children during the operation and urged all departments to work closely together to devise an effective strategy for the repatriation of all illegal Afghans to Afghanistan, according to Dawn. This crackdown on illegal Afghans in Quetta division comes amid intensified security operations in the province, as Pakistan's army claimed yesterday to have killed 50 militants, including members of the Baloch Liberation Army and Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan, during a four-day operation near the Afghanistan border in Balochistan, Khaama Press region is crucial for Chinese infrastructure projects and has been a hotspot for insurgent activity. The Pakistani government is keen to secure resource-rich regions and stabilise its western frontier to support regional economic plans, including the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).The Pakistan Army said that it has killed at least 50 militants during a series of operations conducted over the past four days along the Durand Line with a statement on Tuesday, the military said those killed included members of the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) and the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP). Both groups are designated terrorist organisations in Pakistan and have been involved in frequent attacks on security to the army, the operations mainly targeted militants in parts of Balochistan province where major mining projects are underway. Merely Aadhaar, PAN, Voter ID not sufficient proof of citizenship: Bombay HC
Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], August 13 (ANI): Rejecting the bail application of a man alleged to be a Bangladeshi national, the Bombay High Court noted that Aadhaar, PAN, and Voter ID, without verification, cannot be treated as sufficient proof of judgement by single-judge bench of Justice Amit Borkar said on Tuesday, 'Merely relying on the existence of certain identity documents such as Aadhaar, PAN, or Voter ID, without verification of the process through which these were obtained, cannot be treated as sufficient proof of lawful citizenship at this stage, particularly when the very authenticity of such documents is under investigation."Justice Borkar mentioned that the claim of citizenship can only be examined under the rules of the Citizenship Act, 1955.'The claim of citizenship must be examined strictly under the rules of the Citizenship Act, 1955, including whether the person meets the conditions under Sections 3 to 6, or any special provisions applicable to their case," the judgement prosecution alleged that the applicant is a Bangladeshi national and has forged the identity cards. During the investigation, the police found his birth certificate belonging to the court at this stage has not decided whether the documents presented by the accused are forged or not.'During the investigation, the applicant's mobile phone was taken by the police as per law and sent for forensic examination. From the data recovered from the phone, copies of two birth certificates were found, one said to be of the applicant himself and the other of a woman claimed to be his mother. Both these documents show the place of birth as being in Bangladesh… The Court is not deciding at this stage whether the documents are true or false, that will be decided at the trial. But the fact that such documents have been found on the applicant's own phone is important and cannot be ignored," Justice Borkar said in his judgment. Rejecting the bail plea, Justice Borkar said that the accused can apply for bail if the trial is not concluded within a year. 'However, it shall be open for the applicant to revive his request for bail if the trial is not concluded within a period of one year from today," the judgment read. (ANI)
