David Corenswet Says SUPERMAN Is 'a Comic Book Up on the Big Screen' and a 'Great Way to Start a New Era' — GeekTyrant

Superman star David Corenswet recently opened up about what sets James Gunn's film apart from the other comic book films being made. According to the actor, this isn't your standard 'comic book movie.' It is the comic book.
'My impression, which is only my impression, but rather than being a comic book adaptation to film, which has been the renaissance of comic book movies that started with great films like Iron Man and Batman Begins, where it sort of felt like we were bringing these comic characters to the real world, James's Superman movie is more a comic book up on the big screen.
'I've heard it described that the experience of watching it is sort of like the experience of reading a comic, but obviously in motion on a giant screen, shared with the people around you. I think that should be a new experience for people, and is a great way to start a new era of comic book movies.'
Having seen the film, I 100% agree and that is exactly why I loved the movie! It's very different from any of the other superhero films being made these days.
Gunn just has this distinct filmmaking style hat embraces weirdness, color, and emotional sincerity without losing the escapist fun of the medium.
Corenswet also spoke about the responsibility of taking on a character with so much legacy attached. Instead of mimicking previous portrayals, he went straight to the source material: All-Star Superman , the modern classic by Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely that Gunn reportedly used as a creative north star.
'There's something cool about, in the same way when you play a great character in theater who's been played by great actors before you, you don't really get the chance to go back and see their performances and be inspired by their performances.
'But when you read the play, and you get your inspiration from the same words that they got their inspiration from, there's a nice little spiritual connection through time there."
He continued:
'For me, it was focusing on drawing inspiration from All-Star Superman, the comic that James sort of pointed us to. And in looking at that – not that all the Supermans before me have read that comic – but I saw some things that I recognized in other actors' portrayal of the character.
'But in drawing it from the comics rather than from the other performances, I felt confident that it would become my own interpretation, and I would find things that would be overlapping, but ultimately distinct from previous actors.'
Between the reverence for the comics and the promise of a cinematic experience that feels like reading a comic on a massive screen, Superman is something truly new in a genre desperate for reinvention.

Watch: David Corenswet snuck into Philadelphia screening of 'Superman'

Photo by Jim Ruymen/UPI | License Photo July 15 (UPI) -- Superman star David Corenswet says he snuck into an IMAX screening of his hit film in Philadelphia. The actor, 32, discussed his decision to do so when he stopped by The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon Monday. Corenswet said he felt self-conscious when he viewed the film for the first time at its premiere at the TCL Chinese Theatre in Los Angeles. "So I snuck into the back of an IMAX screening... outside of Philly with a couple of friends," he said. He added that by the end of the film, the audience felt like family because of their reactions to his character. Corenswet then explained why he didn't watch the movie until its Los Angeles premiere. "Usually, I watch a movie early if I'm nervous," he told Fallon. "I want to get my self-conscious viewing out of the way, early. But when I started seeing the trailers, I kind of got the feeling of what it might be to watch the movie as an audience member, and there was this uplifting energy and this feeling of inspiration. It feels like the movies that I grew up watching that I loved. So I wanted to preserve the experience." The film grossed some $122 million over the weekend, becoming the No. 1 feature in North America. The Waldorf Astoria Reopens With Lex Yard, Yoshoku and Peacock Alley

Opening The name of the two-story flagship restaurant in the newly renovated Waldorf Astoria New York refers to the train line that runs under the hotel on its way to Grand Central Terminal. Designed by AvroKO with a subdued palette and touches of Art Deco, the restaurant has a bar on the street level for American brasserie fare like fluke tartare, a restyled Waldorf salad, lobster roll, leek ravioli, roast chicken, a burger and sliders. Upstairs, on the lobby level, where gilded accents enrich the décor, the chef and partner Michael Anthony, of Gramercy Tavern, showcases a five-course market menu with an emphasis on seasonal vegetables. Cocktails are by Jeff Bell, of PDT. 550 Lexington Avenue (50th Street), 212-872-4900, A Japanese restaurant in the Waldorf is not new. But having this one inside the hotel, without a street entrance, distinguishes this luxurious dining room for à la carte maki, nigiri and sashimi; small plates like snap pea and watercress salad; and more substantial grilled madai and Wagyu striploin. Kaiseki is also an option. Ry Nitzkowski is the chef de cuisine. 301 Park Avenue (50th Street), 212-872-4920, Breakfast, lunch and dinner will be served in the grand passageway and lounge, the axis of the hotel and a famous destination for meet-and-greets at or near the iconic clock. The chef de cuisine, Andrew Whitcomb, who also has that title at Lex Yard, offers a few of the items served in that restaurant, like the Waldorf salad, beef slider, and lobster roll, but also crab cakes and pigs in blanket. Jeff Bell is creating the cocktails here, too. 301 Park Avenue (50th Street), 212-872-4910, Opposite their Four Horsemen, Nick Curtola, Amanda McMillan and their partners have their own little ponies with this compact Italian spot. Mr. Curtola's approach, working with his chef de cuisine, Ben Zook, probes some offbeat notions like nervetti (slow-cooked nerves and tendons, popular in the north) and onion salad, mussel panzanella with pickled green tomatoes, trofie with pesto and belper knolle cheese, and grilled chicken hearts to accent the roast chicken. (Wednesday) 284 Grand Street (Roebling Street), Williamsburg, Brooklyn, no phone, Ravi DeRossi's Overthrow Hospitality has added something new to its collection of vegan places in the East Village. This one taps into the tradition of the Maghreb, North Africa, interpreted through a Spanish lens. The chef, Amira Gharib, whose heritage is Egyptian, is serving a tapas array of dishes like Spanish tortilla seasoned with harissa, Egyptian falafel, breads like the baladi with za'atar and labneh, and pan con tomate with harissa butter, with a $10 ceiling. The 40-seat dining room, decorated with tiles, Moroccan and Egyptian motifs, brass lanterns and ceramics, was designed by Nora Gharib, the chef's sister. 511 East Fifth Street (Avenue A), 833-328-4544, Want all of The Times? ‘Squid Game' Blanks At Emmys As ‘The Studio' Sets Comedy Record

'Squid Game' was nowhere to be found when the Television Academy announced Emmy nominations Tuesday morning, a disappointing showing for the record-breaking show that won six Emmys for its first season, as 'The Studio' and 'Severance' led the comedy and drama nominations, respectively. "Squid Game" previously earned 14 nominations and six wins at the Emmys for its first season. (Photo ... More byfor Netflix) Getty Images for Netflix 'Squid Game,' some outlets predicted would snag a spot for Outstanding Drama Series, as well as possible nods for acting or in crafts categories like production design, visual effects and stunt performance, completely blanked at the Emmys this year. Though reviews for the second season of 'Squid Game,' which was eligible for nomination, were not quite as high as the first, season two still boasted a positive 83% score on Rotten Tomatoes and shattered all-time Netflix viewership records upon release last year. 'The Studio,' a new comedy series created by and starring Seth Rogen, nabbed 23 Emmy nominations, setting the record for the most nominations by a comedy series for its debut season, and tying the record for most nominations for a comedy in one year, previously set by 'The Bear' last year. 'The Bear,' which has seen its critical reviews slip since its acclaimed first few seasons, earned 13 nominations this year, down from its record-breaking 23 last year, as debate rages over whether the tense series is actually a comedy. 'Severance' is the overall nomination leader and most-nominated drama series this year, with 27 nods, including lead actor and actress nominations for Adam Scott and Britt Lower. Other leading programs include 'The Penguin' (24 nominations), 'The White Lotus' (23 nominations) and 'The Last of Us' (16 nominations). This is a breaking story. Check back for updates.
