For 30 years, he has managed clients across various sectors, including consumer products, technology, and nonprofit. He has served as president of PRSA's Los Angeles Chapter and chair of the Americas Region Board for The Worldcom Public Relations Group, where he currently serves as global marketing chair. Since 2001, he has been an adjunct professor at USC Annenberg and is the author of Disrupted, From GenY to iGen: Communicating with the Next Generation. Pollack is also a member of the Forbes Agency Council. In 2019, he established the Noemi Pollack Scholarship at USC's Center for Public Relations, providing annual tuition support for an undergraduate public relations student.

The Power Of Niche Positioning: How It Can Be Your Winning Strategy
Valentina Drofa, Founder and CEO at the PR firm for eminent finance and fintech brands Drofa Comms. Every now and then, people ask me about the biggest lesson I've learned building a PR agency in finance and fintech. My answer is this: Don't be afraid to have a niche. A narrow focus and a clear idea of what services you offer can be your greatest competitive advantage. In my experience, in today's world, trust, expertise and quality of execution carry a lot of weight, and people are more likely to flock to companies that have a proven history in their fields. When I started my company, I didn't have a perfect business plan in mind. It would be more accurate to say that my agency was born as a natural culmination of my own path in finance. My first career steps took place in a brokerage firm back in 2007. What I originally thought would be a temporary job ended up inextricably tying my life to the financial markets. Over time, I became the head of the firm's education center and the go-to person for clients with questions. In order to save time answering many of the same repetitive inquiries, I decided to build an online education portal, which later turned into my own independent business. And providing education gradually transformed into offering communications and public relations. Later, I realized that I could help financial companies with a lot more than just knowledge. I pinpointed that what many of them really needed was proper positioning, clear messaging and better ways to communicate with their target audiences. That's what led me to establish my PR firm. Though it required walking a long road, what some may view as a limitation—only working in finance—eventually turned into my agency's biggest asset. If you're thinking about starting a company, keep in mind the power of niche positioning, as it can become your winning strategy. Why Niche Positioning Matters It makes sense to choose business partners with a niche: When they have complex businesses, leaders don't necessarily want a jack-of-all-trades. By hiring someone who speaks their language, leaders can get a partner who truly understands the nuances and risks of their business from day one. My experience has shown me that the deeper you delve into a specific market, the more value you can build in the eyes of others—and the harder it becomes for generalist companies to catch up to you. I can say that depth is a powerful advantage. When you don't have to figure things out as you go or learn on your client's time and money, it helps establish a sense of authority and trust. You've already tried, failed and learned. Your track record becomes your currency in professional settings. Surviving The Narrow Path Of course, there's a downside to niching. When you're in a niche, you're often forced to say 'no' to things that might bring in quick money but don't align with your expertise. I remember how, over the years, I've had to refuse clients in industries outside of finance. It wasn't easy, especially at the start. But if you don't say no, you risk being average at many things and excelling at nothing. In my view, this is the real test: Can you survive long enough for your specialization to pay off? Many can't. The path is narrow, and when you're niching, you can't necessarily rely on a constant flow of easy projects. You have to be prepared to invest in your reputation and keep learning, even when there's no immediate profit. Looking back, I can say that you can't pick just any niche and expect it to work. You have to ask yourself: Is it sustainable? Can it support your growth for years to come? Does it have the potential to keep growing so that your business can grow with it? If a niche has no future prospects, then your business is unlikely to last long. In my case, financial markets certainly make for a good fit, because they aren't going anywhere—they just evolve. From physical cash to digital currencies, finance has stayed relevant for centuries and will stay so for many more. The instruments may change, but the fundamental need is still the same. Another important lesson I learned is that you shouldn't try to be everything to everyone. If a client's request is far from the core of what you do, be honest. Recommend someone better suited for the job if you know them. That will still earn you credit with the client while also allowing you to save your team's energy for what you know you can do best. Expertise Means Doing The Same Thing And Getting Better Each Time Some people fear that specialization is boring. However, I feel the exact opposite. At my agency, we speak with journalists, manage crises, write content and develop communications strategies. Yes, always in finance and fintech, but this is a world that never stands still. New assets, technologies, regulations, crises—there's always something happening. You can't really rest on your laurels and grow complacent. And I like it. If you see specialization as boring, I encourage you to change your mindset. When you niche, over time, you're able to build an intuitive understanding of your market's pain points. You'll be able to reach a point where, when a new client comes to you, you won't need to spend days learning the basics of what they do. The client can quickly grasp that you know their world and that you can strategically advise them. Additionally, specialization doesn't mean stagnation. You can, and should, continually pursue further growth within your niche by adding new services that better serve the same client base. For us, that meant expanding from classic PR to crisis communications, digital strategy, education and thought leadership for finance and fintech players. That's the kind of expansion that makes strategic sense and strengthens your position instead of spreading yourself too thin over too much. A narrow focus might initially feel intimidating. However, if you persevere through the first challenging years and remain committed, I believe that one day your niche will reward you. Your expertise will speak for itself, and your clients will find you—not because you do everything, but because you do the one thing they need better than anyone else.
