JNU students continue hunger strike, protest hostel extension format

Students' Union (JNUSU) has objected to what it claims is a new undertaking format for PhD students seeking hostel extension, alleging that it requires them to express "gratitude" for being allowed to stay beyond the normal academic period.
According to the union, the alleged undertaking format states that "the university has kindly agreed to allow me to stay in the hostel on humanitarian grounds" and asks students to declare a final date for thesis submission, failing which hostel facilities will be withdrawn.
Terming this "maafinama" (clemency letter), the JNUSU members affiliated with Left organisations said the language was coercive and humiliating, and that the unpredictable nature of research timelines makes such rigid conditions unfair.
It demanded automatic hostel extension for scholars who have received academic extension, citing the essential role accommodation plays in completing research, especially for students from marginalised backgrounds.

In a statement on Tuesday, the union said its vice-president and general secretary met the Dean of Students on July 7 to convey these concerns.
Meanwhile, JNUSU president Nitish Kumar was rushed to Safdarjung hospital late Monday night after complaining of chest pain.
He rejoined the hunger strike after being discharged. Doctors have warned that students on strike face serious health risks and have advised them to discontinue to hunger strike, according to the JNUSU members.
The protesters are demanding the rollback of CUET for PhD admissions and restoration of the JNU Entrance Exam (JNUEE). Among other demands are the extension of hostel stay for PhD scholars nearing completion, increasing the merit-cum-means (MCM) scholarship to Rs 5,000, and withdrawal of proctorial inquiries.
Currently, four students remain on hunger strike, while several others who joined in solidarity earlier have stepped down due to health concerns. Health records show a steep weight loss and rising blood pressure and ketone levels among strikers.
Asked about the undertaking, dean of students Manuradha Chaudhary told TOI, "We cannot provide a blanket extension as it will set a wrong precedent. The students had approached high court and even the court has given a one-and-a-half-month extension only. The administration is already considering extension case to case basis on humanitarian grounds. We also need to make space for new batch of students."

Rs 67,000 crore plan approved to enhance operational capability of Armed forces
The Defence Acquisition Council (DAC), chaired by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, on Tuesday approved proposals worth approximately Rs 67,000 crore to upgrade the operational capabilities of the Indian Armed Forces. The decisions cover key acquisitions and upgrades for the Army, Navy, and the Air Force, an official statement the Army, the DAC approved the procurement of Thermal Imager-based Night Sights for drivers of BMP infantry vehicles. This move is aimed at enhancing the nighttime mobility of mechanised infantry units, improving their operational effectiveness during low-visibility Navy will get a boost with the procurement of Compact Autonomous Surface Craft (CASC), which are designed for anti-submarine warfare. These unmanned vessels will boost the Navy's ability to detect, identify, and neutralise underwater threats. Additionally, the Navy will receive updated BrahMos missile fire control systems and launchers, along with an upgrade to the existing BARAK-1 missile system, improving its point defence a significant move to enhance air surveillance and defence, the Air Force will procure advanced Mountain Radars. The Defence Ministry has cleared proposals worth ₹67,000 crore to boost the operational capabilities of the Army, Navy, and Air Force, including drones, radars, missile systems, and maintenance deals New Delhi The Defence Acquisition Council (DAC), chaired by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, on August 5 cleared multiple defence proposals worth around ₹67,000 crore, aimed at significantly enhancing the operational capabilities of the Indian Armed Forces. In an official statement, the Ministry of Defence said, 'The Defence Acquisition Council, under the chairmanship of Raksha Mantri Rajnath Singh on August 5, approved various proposals amounting to a total cost of about Rs 67,000 crore.' 'This would enhance night driving capability of BMP and provide higher mobility and operational advantage to the Mechanised Infantry,' the statement said. Autonomous craft and upgraded missile defence The Indian Navy is set to acquire Compact Autonomous Surface Craft, BrahMos Fire Control System & Launchers, and an upgraded BARAK-1 Point Defence Missile System. According to the ministry, 'The procurement of Compact Autonomous Surface Craft will provide the capability to the Indian Navy for detection, classification and neutralisation of threats in anti-submarine warfare missions.' Radars for mountainous borders Meanwhile, the Indian Air Force (IAF) will receive Mountain Radars and an upgraded SAKSHAM/SPYDER Weapon System. 'The procurement of mountain radars will enhance the air surveillance capability along and across the borders in the mountainous region,' the ministry stated. 'The upgradation of SAKSHAM/SPYDER System for integration with Integrated Air Command and Control System will enhance the Air Defence capability,' it added. MALE drones for surveillance A major approval was granted for the procurement of Medium Altitude Long Endurance (MALE) Remotely Piloted Aircraft (RPAs) for use across all three services. 'The proposed MALE RPAs can carry multiple payloads & weapons and operate at longer ranges for long endurance missions. They will significantly enhance round-the-clock surveillance and combat capability of the Armed Forces,' the ministry noted. Support, maintenance approvals The DAC also cleared critical sustenance and maintenance proposals, including for India's strategic airlift and missile defence assets. 'AoN was also accorded for sustenance of C-17 and C-130J fleets and comprehensive annual maintenance contract of S-400 Long Range Air Defence Missile System,' the ministry said.
