Vestirsi: How $20k turned into eight-figure Aussie success story

Monica Upton knows how a simple accessory can change everything.
'The ability a bag has to transform your look and how you feel when you wake up in the morning is really powerful,' says the founder and creative director of Australian leather bag brand, Vestirsi.
In 2019, at age 30, she invested $20,000 to self-fund what has become an eight-figure business in just five years.
Vestirsi, Italian for 'dress up', was founded from Monica's struggle to find a quality leather work bag that didn't cost thousands of dollars.
Since then, the now Brisbane-based brand has gone from strength to strength, growing from one to 21 staff members and experiencing a 354 per cent growth in revenue in the last two years. This week, Vestirsi launched into Australian retail giant, David Jones.
'I had a very specific product in mind,' Monica tells news.com.au checkout.
'I knew exactly what I wanted to be able to make and my target price because I knew what the gap was in Australia.'
It was this single focus that has helped shape Vestirsi into what it is today.
'THERE MUST BE OTHER WOMEN IN AUSTRALIA THAT ARE HAVING THIS SAME FRUSTRATION'
After moving to Melbourne to work at Mecca Head Office, the Perth local immediately spotted a gap in the market.
'I noticed that a lot of the senior staff had beautiful Celine and Prada and gorgeous $3000, $4000 bags,' she says.
Monica took to Chapel Street in Melbourne, Australia's premier shopping destination, and couldn't find a leather bag in her price range.
'Everything was either fake leather or PU vegan leather, which I didn't want,' she says.
'I wanted quality that would last for many years because I needed to stretch my coin further.
'So that planted the seed in my mind that if I'm looking for this work bag, there must be other women in Australia that are having this same frustration.'
To find this perfect bag, Monica turned to her Italian heritage.
'My grandparents are Italian, so I knew that Italy, as well as being famous for the best food and the best wine, had the best leather,' she says.
Monica used her honeymoon to meet with several suppliers in Italy and she eventually found the one that she still works with today.
Monica gave herself six months to get the brand off the ground. It finally launched in September 2019 to almost immediate acclaim.
'We had success from day one,' she says.
'I used my PR contacts from my Mecca days to pitch to some journalists who picked up the story, which again was further confirmation that no one was really making simple chic styles for under $500. '
By 2023, four years after launching, Vestirsi was selling 6000 units in a year. They now do that in a month.
'IT CAN BE LONELY AT THE START'
Now with a team of 21 staff, Vestirsi is a well-oiled machine, but in the early days, it was just Monica.
'I think it can be lonely at the start,' she says.
'You have to be okay with the isolation of that and the autonomy. You have to be comfortable wearing a million hats.'
Back then, there was no one else to bounce ideas off and she says she simply had to be full of confidence in herself and her idea.
'You don't have the luxury of self-doubt,' Monica says.
'You've got to really back yourself and back your concept from day one.
'I think the biggest challenge or difference at the start is probably the loneliness and the isolation compared to where it is now.'
The now mother of two says that having children has also shaped the business strategy.
' Working mums would know how hard it is to juggle a job and children. So I actually feel incredibly blessed that it's my own business,' Monica says.
'But the counter of that is that you never stop and you never switch off.
'I didn't take maternity leave, I don't take annual leave. It never stops.'
'SELLS ITSELF IN ITS BEAUTY AND SIMPLICITY'
'There's something about the understated Australian aesthetic that really resonates with women around the globe,' Monica says.
It was this gap that Monica never lost sight of.
'I knew if this is something that I deemed to be of value and that I cared about, there would be other women who had the same sentiment,' she says.
'When so much of Australian fashion and fashion globally is made in China, there's absolutely a customer who wants something that has that Italian heritage and that European craftsmanship, and I really truly believed that this is something special that we can provide the customer.'
This meaning and purpose drives everything Vestirsi does.
'The purpose of the brand was to fuse the beautiful, understated Australian aesthetic with the impeccable Italian craftsmanship and then deliver it to the Australian woman at a reasonable price,' says Monica.
'DOUBLED OVERNIGHT'
The brand's best-selling bag by far is the Bella Black 3-in-1 Convertible Bag.
'It's a very chic, minimal design, but we've combined it with the everyday practicality the Australian and international woman wants from her handbag,' Monica says.
'And the fusion of those two pillars, timelessness and luxury with practicality. has just been a real sweet spot for that bag.'
The bag was originally a two-in-one bag and only recently relaunched as a three-in-one.
Already a bestseller, the relaunch saw sales double overnight.
'If you don't listen to your customers, you're just missing a huge opportunity to grow your brand even more, because they'll often tell you what they want,' Monica says.
Monica's personal favourite is the Sloan Black Leather Crossbody Clutch. It can similarly be worn as either a clutch or a cross-body bag.
'I love the classic size for just everyday girls' lunches or going into meetings.
'You can still feel really polished and it still fits a lot, but you can really take it from day to night,' she says.
And it's this ability to make any woman feel polished and confident that proves Monica found the perfect formula from day one.

Advocates of short-term rentals say regulations in the sector are shifting the blame away from governments and towards property owners. Short-stay rentals, typically associated with websites like Airbnb and Stayz, have drawn criticism for taking properties away from the long-term rental market. In other parts of the world, jurisdictions are putting restrictions on short-stay accommodation, including in New York City and Barcelona, amid housing shortages. But research from the University of South Australia has claimed restrictions and bans have done little to help housing stocks. Tourism expert and study author Peter O'Connor said jurisdictions that had banned short-stay accommodation failed to see any meaningful growth in housing access. He said the main consequence was limiting tourism accommodation, in turn increasing prices. "If you reduce the number of short-term rentals which are available, one of the things you do is make it more difficult for tourists to find accommodation," Professor O'Connor said. "Here in Australia, tourism is our number one service export and it has a lot of knock-on effects in terms of the local community and spending in bars, restaurants and shops." A South Australian parliamentary committee is looking into the short-stay accommodation sector, including possible regulations on short-stay rentals. Wendy Roeters owns two homes in Mount Gambier which she rents out for short stays. She said the sector was needed in regional areas where workers travel and stay for extended periods and where there were fewer large hotels. "For companies, the short-term stays are the better option," she said. "You get a lot of people for the hospital, like doctors and nurses. I've just had a nurse stay for three weeks. "You'll have work crews who might be working on construction who might be doing it for a period of six months." Ms Roeters added it was unfair to penalise short-stay property owners for there being a wider shortage of housing. "I can understand that the government wants housing, but that's not the responsibility of people that have a property, that's the government's responsibility," she said. Property reform advocacy group Grounded produced its own report into the short-stay sector in Australia, released in June. It found the profits on short-term rentals were 81 per cent more than if the property was placed on the long-term market in 13 of Australia's busiest tourism towns. Grounded managing director Karl Fitzgerald said it was clear short-stay accommodation was impacting local housing supply. "It's more supply coming out of the long-term rental market and out of the ownership market," he said. "When government is talking about supply on every front, it's strange that Airbnb is not considered as a factor. Mr Fitzgerald said a plan to limit the growth of short-stay accommodation would be more effective, such as a "cap and trade" scheme, which would give licenses to property owners. "That's where having at least a licensing system that regulates the growth and the supply and perhaps caps it and reduces it over time until there's enough funding to channel some of the profits away from Airbnb," he said. "Use that money to fund long-term affordable housing under a community land trust model." Professor O'Connor argued short-stay accommodation had become a "quick fix" for governments in favour of more complicated plans to ease the housing crisis. "It's a lot easier for a state government or a council to introduce a regulation that limits the number of short-term rentals than it is to introduce some way of encouraging the building of new houses," he said. South Australian Greens MLC Robert Simms is leading the state's parliamentary committee into short-stay accommodation. He agreed the sector was not solely to blame for the state's housing crisis, but said it still needed regulation. "I think there's no doubt that short stay is here to stay, but the question is whether or not we've got the balance right," he said. "It is concerning that people might be running a property that is, in effect, a business, and yet they might be paying at the same rates as their neighbour who is living in a private residence. "That doesn't really seem fair, and that's why I think there's a level of community interest in the idea of regulation of the sector."

That approach worked, and worked well, for a generation. But for younger Aussies trying to follow the same steps today, it's like turning up to the Tour de France with a BMX bike. The rules have changed, but most people are still playing the old game. So we wanted to cover what's broken, and what actually works instead. Cashed Up series is dedicated to helping young Australians kickstart their journey to financial freedom. The playbook for building wealth has changed and we are here to show you how to navigate it. The old formula is out of reach and out of date Boomers rode a once-in-a-century wave of economic tailwinds - affordable housing, strong real wage growth, generous tax savings, and a compulsory super system that matured at just the right time. A home in Sydney's Inner West might have cost $100,000 in the '90s. Today it's closer to $2 million, but incomes haven't increased 20x to match. When you add in stagnant wage growth, rising living costs, eye-watering childcare fees, it's no wonder younger generations feel like they need to push harder just to keep up. The most common money traps younger people fall into today include: • Buying your home too early: Scraping together a deposit for a tiny property in the suburbs can lock you into bad debt and kill your investing potential, • Saving without investing: Inflation and tax is killing your bank balance. Earning 4 per cent while costs increase by 6 per cent isn't saving, it's going backwards, • Blind faith in super: Most people under 40 won't see that money for decades, and leaving your entire financial strategy to a system you can't control isn't a strategy - it's a gamble. The new money game plan The old rule was 'buy as soon as you can', the new one is 'build your options first'. That means setting yourself up to take advantage of opportunities, not locking yourself into a giant mortgage just because it feels like the responsible thing to do. 1. Invest before you own Property can still be a powerful tool to grow your money - but owning the roof over your head isn't the only way to use it. More and more young Australians are rentvesting; renting where you want to live, and buying where it makes sense financially. You can use smart debt to invest into growth focused assets, not emotional purchases. 2. Make your money work harder If your savings are sitting in a high interest account, this just means you're slightly less broke than the person with it all in cash. But if you're serious about getting ahead, investing is non-negotiable. Shares, ETFs, and even crypto (carefully) can give you the kind of compounding growth that savings never will. Micro investing platforms mean you don't need thousands to get started, just consistency and a bit of time. 3. Use the tax rules you your advantage You don't need to be a finance nerd to benefit from smart tax moves. Salary sacrificing to your super fund, using strategies like negative gearing and debt recycling, and even investing through tax structures like bonds and trusts - can all accelerate your asset building when used intentionally. The new rich don't just earn more, they keep more. 4. Grow your income There's a limit to how much you can save, but there's no cap on what you can earn. Upskilling, changing jobs or industries, negotiating a pay rise, or launching a side hustle can fast track your money momentum more than giving up your daily coffee ever will. Rewriting the rules doesn't mean rejecting them all You don't need to throw out the baby with the bathwater. The principles behind the Boomer game plan - spend less than you earn, invest, and use time to your advantage - still hold up today. But the way you use those principles has to change. You don't need to own a home at 30 to be financially secure. You don't need to know how to pick stocks. And you definitely don't need to follow a blueprint written for a different economy. A Geelong interior designer is preparing to farewell her family's beloved home after almost two decades curating her ideal bayside sanctuary. She celebrates her love of premium natural materials at the four-bedroom Rippleside house where a Covid-era refurbishment provided a fresh chance for a contemporary makeover. A striking Castlemaine slate feature wall spanning the double height stairwell is the centrepiece of the revamped two-storey residence which the vendor describes as '20 years in the making'. She says while she was happy with the original 18-year-old house, designed by Projekt Evolve as a knockdown rebuild project at 46 Victoria St, Rippleside, the time had come to remove a few internal walls and update the kitchen, laundry and joinery. Naturally, she hunted down some of her favourite finishes, including solid blackbutt flooring and marble benchtops. 'I am a big believer in natural materials like stone and marble and solid timber flooring – anything that brings that natural element in,' the vendor says. 'Everything you touch and feel in here is quite high-end because I think it's generational so it will last.' Nowhere is this more apparent than in the open-plan kitchen and dining area at the heart of the entry level where home cooks have a suite of Miele cooking appliances, a Liebherr fridge, Zip tap and discrete Bora downdraught cooktop at their disposal. Other little luxuries are less obvious – the multi-room Sonos audio system across five zones, CCTV network and a Wi-Fi enabled front door intercom system. A suite of flexible living areas includes an elegant front lounge, home theatre with a projector system and a peaceful library the vendor nominates as one of her favourite rooms. 'I have my Art Deco chairs that I have reupholstered three times and there's a vibe in there with the books that surround you, it's a very quiet space,' she says. A covered deck off the dining area is the go-to for outdoor entertaining and adjoins a courtyard featuring Castlemaine slate crazy paving. 'We absolutely love our Castlemaine slate,' the vendor says. 'I think it's the focal point of our home because we've taken it from the front facade outside and then we have taken it into the house and also into the back courtyard so it's a bit of a transition.' A triple garage with a store accessed via Edward St at the rear is another prized feature, though those keen to minimise car use can take advantage of the nearby North Geelong train station and bayside walking trails, just 150m from the front door. The vendor says the location has been fantastic as she travels to her South Melbourne showroom for work most days, something which as prompted the sale. 'If I could pick it up and move it Melbourne I would that,' she says. McGrath, Geelong agent Jasmine Jurkovic is handling the sale of 46 Victoria St, Rippleside, which is listed with $2.9m to $3.15m price hopes.
